The Clontarf Academy

Back to Woody Head for camp this term for Year 7 and 8’s. Even though it was wet once again the boys had a fantastic time. Day 1 started with a heath session ran by Headspace Yarn Safe worker Ashleigh Naden. The group discussed signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety and workshopped ways of how to deal with them along with healthy lifestyle choices.

The camp was packed full of fun with a visit to Surfing Australia Kingscliff, goal setting and cultural identity workshops, beach footy, swimming, camp cook ups and more. Looking forward to more adventures with this group of young men.

We celebrated Mother’s Day with a hot breakfast for our wonderful women who do so much for us. Academy participants Will James, Harry Chadburn and Reef Mckay spoke on behalf of the students and staff sharing gratitude for all that they do for us. The boys served Mum breakfast and gave a personal hand written card as well. Well done!

Fishing competition was a hit with 18 boys going head to head in the termly Clontarf Fishing Pro led by the legendary Mr Bond. Mammoth sized fish were caught and released before taking photos. However we did manage the catch a few brim that they boys were proud enough to release as well. All in all a great afternoon on the Currumbin Creek pumping yabbies and wetting a line.

Back to basics cooking for juniors continued and the men whipped up some healthy burritos. They prepared the meal by working together and listening intently to Ms Maher’s instruction.

Indigenous outreach and cultural support officer Mr Paul Martin from Bond University, met with Year 11 and 12 students who were interested in University pathways. Paul ran a profiling session to gain clarity around what the students may be interested in. He also informed the group about opportunities and support at Bond.

The Teachers v Students ping pong competition went down to the wire with the Teachers winning 17 games to 16. There was some mesmerising ping pong at hand and highlights were the face off before each game. We will be running another doubles competition to try get even with the teachers!

We look forward to Year 9 and 10 Camp to Mackay, worksite visits, Beach Rugby carnival and much more!
