Year 12 Health - Health camp!

Throughout the 2 year course of Health, we experience a range of self reflection and self improvement activities. The culminating activity is Year 12 Health camp, and this was experienced in Week 2 of Term 2. Students are advised of very few details to ensure that challenge is present throughout the camp. The first challenge was to pack everything they needed into a single backpack. For some students this meant leaving some items behind. Once the packs were packed, we ventured into the Numinbah Valley for three days and two nights. The students were then challenged to navigate to our destinations, using maps only. With plenty of rest stops along the way, spectacular scenery, some self-reflection and tolerating a lack of amenities we arrived at the Numinbah Community Hall for the final honouring circle. Ms Wyatt and Mr Roberts are very proud of the effort and resilience shown by the students across the three days. Our sincere thanks to Tallebudgera Outdoor and Environmental Education Centre (Currumbin Farm campus) for their facilitation of this experience.

Year 11 and 12 Fitness

Recently all Certificate III and IV Fitness students completed their first practical assessment for 2021. For Year 11s this involved screening a client and designing an appropriate exercise program, whilst for Year 12s it involved designing and conducting a group training session. Once again The College of Health and Fitness assessors were impressed with the standard of work as a result of the PBC teacher. Thanks to Mr Maccan, Mr Johnstone, Mr Zimmerle and Mr Patison for their work in these classes.

Year 9 Health and Wellbeing

Students are exploring the conceptual understanding of a thriving mind during this term. On a recent class visit I was impressed by the work of Mr Bullpitt and the students on reactive versus purposeful thinking patterns. Using the ABCD model from Beyond Blue's Senseability program students were able to recognise specific points in time where they could influence how they think about a specific event. This is a powerful strategy that will not only increase their emotional intelligence, but serve to improve resilience. I look forward to the end of term when the students will present strategies to Year 7s and staff.

Senior Physical Education

Students are learning to program training across a number of weeks in what is termed a microcycle. Initially the students learn by engaging in teacher-led training to understand the concepts of intensity, recovery and duration to ensure their programming is at a suitable standard for their performance goals. A range of training methods are experienced including long continuous, interval and circuit. The next assessment task for this cohort will be influenced by the programming each student completes for themselves.

Senior Health

Students are engaging in the study of life course, which recognises and outlines that multiple trajectories and transitions are experienced throughout life. Students will explore the significance of relationships on their personal trajectories and transitions, exploring the difference between respectful (enhance the wellbeing of self and others) and toxic (reduce the wellbeing of self and others) relationships. Their next assessment task involves the analysis of a range of data relevant to the PBC Year 12 cohort, evaluation of potential programs to benefit the PBC year 12 cohort and ultimately a recommendation to the senior school leadership to propose the implementation of a program. This is important work that not only benefits these students as they prepare for a significant life transition (graduating secondary school), but also potentially benefits all Year 12s.
