Academic Excellence News

On the long Labour Day weekend, nine PBC philosophy students gave up their Saturday to discuss important international issues at the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA) held at the Tweed Civic Centre, organised and sponsored by Rotary.

Jake Matsushita won the right to compete at the national MUNA held in Canberra in August where he will meet delegates from all over Australia, international diplomats and watch debate in the House of Representatives.

PBC adopted the nations of;

  • China: Stephanie Farquhar, Luke Pache and Liam Comerford
  • Israel: Chloe Hofrichter, Melanie Dietrich and Tuscany Barwick
  • Australia: Tayla Miller, Max and Jake Matsushita

Students debated and voted upon the following resolutions:

  • The establishment of a universal, equitable international trading system under the World Trade Organisation
  • The protection of international trade and international waters in the South China Sea
  • The imposition of punitive sanctions against the Government of Myanmar and investigation of gross human rights violations in Myanmar
  • The regulation of international migration including the recognition of educational and professional qualifications the provision of acceptable housing, accommodation, education and health care for refugees and displaced people

PBC can be proud of the diplomacy demonstrated by its students and their ability to argue for or against resolutions that they personally disagreed with.  All teams made new alliances and new friends from schools across the Gold Coast. Thank you Rotary; you do great work.
