Technology News

Food Technology

It is a busy term for the Technology Foods Department.

Mr Bonds Year 7 technology class are planting seedlings and upcycling old egg cartons to add to the community garden that we are growing at PBC using compost that has been created from organic matter collected in the school and processed in the sustainability shed. They have loved this activity as part of our sustainability and textiles unit. We currently have a competition running between seven groups in the class to see who can look after and grow the best plants. Hopefully these vegetables will end up in their kitchens, so they can pass on the education of locally sourced food and sustainability to their families.

Year 9 are currently investigating Diet Related Diseases (DRDs), in this unit they will look at the top 10 DRDs in Australia and presenting their research to their peers in the form of a multi modal presentation. Recipes produced focus on different dietary related aspects to support in class learning.

Year 10 Students are working on their Food Around the World Marketta assessment, where they make and sell food from different countries to the student population. The designing of the Marketta stall and the meal to be sold is the final part of the assessment for the term. Students are cooking a different nationalities dish each week in class as inspiration for this Marketta.

During Term 2 the Certificate III Hospitality Students have designed, made and have delivered lunch boxes to the Teaching staff of the school. The lunch boxes they are making vary from Chicken Caesar Salad with Caramel ANZAC Slice and a beverage to a Club Sandwich with Hot Chips.

Industrial Skills

Year 12 ISK (Industrial skills) are currently working on a sheet aluminium esky which is rivetted together and sealed with clear silicone. This esky can be difficult to make with high importance placed on the accuracy of marking, cutting, drilling and placement of each part.

Once the project is done it is very rewarding for student as they have a fully functional and unique esky they will keep with them for many years to come.

Next up students will make an A4 photo frame and a small fold up picnic table.
