The Arts News

The Arts classrooms and studios are flourishing with activity at the start of Term 2. Students are busily developing their skills in preparation for assessment, and also extending their skills in extra-curricular opportunities.

Instrumental Music

The Instrumental Music department welcomes Mr Bill Buchanan to the team. Students are fortunate to have such an experienced and passionate musician as their Tutor, joining Instrumental Music Coordinator Mr Justin Hart. Students performed beautifully at our recent ANZAC ceremony and are working on repertoire for the upcoming Gold Coast Eisteddfod.

Drama

Drama students are preparing for the Gold Coast Secondary School’s Drama Festival this term and entry to the ‘Scene Project’ at the Queensland Theatre Company. Students were fortunate enough to engage in a workshop with Masked Theatre to extend their physical theatre skills to further develop their work for the upcoming competitions.

Students were recently enthralled by Shock Therapy’s production of “Medea”.  The company love coming to PBC due to the excellence and talent of the students in the audience.  After the performance, Sam, Hayden and Knot led a workshop for Year 12 on transforming Epic Text.  The actors were impressed by the student’s intelligent and intuitive Directorial Visions of the classic Greek Text and offered expert professional feedback to assist in their assessment preparations.

Music Excellence

Last Wednesday the Senior Music Excellence students ventured to Southbank and discovered the thriving music scene at Griffith Conservatorium. We were greeted kindly by friendly faces of PBC alumni and their classmates, exposing us to the experimental side of music. We first enjoyed a composition lunchtime concert showcasing some of the Con’s finest first, second and third year music students.

The endless study options were shown to us on the tour of the conservatorium, as well as the unlimited facilities and instruments for a large range of courses.

"We were treated to an unique percussion performance which demonstrated the unconventional side of music and how to use every day objects to create intricate and creative sounds. We got so much out of this trip and were exposed to the many different pathways we can take after school." Year 11 Music Excellence Students Olive Mc Cagh and Bonnie Kruger.

Year 11 Music students are also preparing for their lunchtime concert ‘Redsfest’ Monday 10 May under the Library. PBC Alumni Molly Keen returned to PBC last week to lead a workshop on composition with the Working Musicians Program.

Visual Art

Year 10 Visual Art Student Ky Follent will represent the PBC Creative Arts Department in attending the HOTA Gallery opening, invited by Councillor Daphne McDonald on Saturday 8 May. Visual Arts students will venture up to Brisbane to view the Creative Generation exhibition at GOMA in June.

Dance Excellence

Year 7 Dance Excellence students performed at the Year 7 Optima assembly this week. Check out our Instagram account @pbcshs to see the video. Dancers are now busily preparing for their performance pieces for the Gold Coast Eisteddfods and attending QPAC to see a performance of ‘Three’ at the end of the month.

Film TV and New Media

Film, TV and New Media students have been working on creating podcasts, experimental film and series pilots in class.

Last week we took 32 Arts students to see the critically acclaimed musical ‘Come from Away’ at QPAC. Students loved the musical and had a wonderful time!

The Arts community at PBC is bursting with creativity and buzzing with energy at the start of Term 2!
