April is Autism Awareness Month

autism_awareness.jpg

“When you’ve met one child with autism, you’ve met one child with autism”. This quote reminds us that Autism is one part of who someone is, along with many other qualities. It is important to spend the time getting to know each child to understand how they interact in and view the world.

Autism Awareness Month is an opportunity to highlight not only the importance of things such as early intervention and timely support, but the uniqueness of people with autism, the diversity of autism and the celebration of difference. Embracing difference is all about supporting and nurturing the child who is perceived as different. It’s about making adjustments so each child can take their place in the community in a positive way, learning and engaging socially. It’s about enabling inclusion.
