Consistency in Mathematics

If last terms report card came as a little bit of a shock, it needn’t be cause for alarm (it is an interim report), but as a healthy reminder about that achievement in math is dependent upon consistency. We all know the fable of the Tortoise and the Hare, and when it comes to mathematics the moral couldn’t be more applicable.

Students should ask themselves the following 3 key questions:

  1. Do I bring all equipment (work books, charged computer, calculator and writing equipment) to every lesson?
  2. During the lesson do I remain focused and complete all set work?
  3. Do I consistently complete homework?

If students can answer ‘yes’ to all three questions and are still not meeting their goals please contact the class teacher or organise a parent teacher/interview for later this term. Another avenue of support is Homework Club. Homework Club is held in the IDT block from 3:15 – 4:00pm on Thursdays. Here students have an opportunity to clarify misunderstandings, catch up on assessment, classwork and homework.

Assessment

This term Year 7, 8 and 9 mainstream mathematics assessment will consist of an end of term exam and Year 8 will also complete an assignment. A more detailed breakdown of assessment is available on the PBC website (click here for more assessment information as well as the PBC Assessment Policy and Application for Extension or Change of Date form). Please see below for assessment due dates:

A note about calculators.  Students are expected to have their own scientific calculator for all Maths lessons. Casio is the preferred model (see image below) at PBC, but any scientific calculator is acceptable. Students are not permitted to use their mobile phones as a calculator. Thank you for your support with this.
