Senior Secondary Update

Year 12

Our Year 12 students are currently completing Mock exams for General subjects and finalising assessment for Applied and VET subjects. All students have been emailed the timetable for these exams, it has also been published on the school website: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment.

During Term 4 only General classes will be timetabled as students prepare for External Assessment commencing on 26 October. The exception to this is students that still need to finalise VET courses and students that did not sit the Common Internal Assessment for Essential English and Essential Maths at the end of Term 1. These students will still be required to attend classes and complete assessment.

Students in Applied courses that are not required to attend school will have the opportunity to complete a range of courses to improve their employment prospects. These courses are: Construction White Card, Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA), First Aid and Safety Training, Basic Barista course, Basic Bar course and Responsible Service of Gambling (RSG). All courses will have fees and limited numbers. All parents and students eligible for these courses have been emailed the schedule of the Alternate program. To register for a course students should contact our Industry Liaison officer Ms Shreeve in Y block (sshre6@eq.edu.au).

The school website has a section which contains all the details regarding upcoming External Exams https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment. Parents and students should also be familiarising themselves with the myQCEwebsite and its link to External assessment: https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/external-assessment.html. This site also has some good tips on effective study skills and preparing for external assessments in the section Preparing for Assessments.

A reminder for students interested in apprenticeships to register with Ms Shreeve in Y block as a number of agencies have vacancies now. This database is also shared with future employers that contact the school with opportunities for school leavers.

Year 11

Year 11 students will finalise Unit 2 in shutdown during Week 10 of this term 14-18 September.  The schedule of these exams has been published on the student curriculum drive and the school website https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment. This is a full shutdown and students only need to attend when they have scheduled exams.

The school assessment policy is also on the above link. A reminder that all assignments are due at 9:00am on the due date and that teachers are instructed to make a judgement on the evidence, which is available at this time. Late assignments are not accepted.

Moving forward Year 11 students will commence the summative units for ATAR in term 4 of this year and will have their first assessment for Unit 3 in the last week of Term 4. This will be a full shutdown in the week of  23-27 November.

In 2021 Year 12 and Year 10 students will have their exams and assessment due in the last week of each term (Week 10).

A reminder that all students must have passed a Unit of English and Maths by the end of Unit 2. Students that do not meet this requirement will have to complete a VET certificate that meets the requirements of the QCE. This course will have a cost of $300.

Year 10

Year 10 students are again encouraged to commence a school-based apprenticeship and traineeship (SAT) in Year10 rather than in Year 11. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block for more information regarding SATs. Year 10 students will have shutdown exams on the last 3 days of this term 16-18September. The timetable has also been published on the student drive and the school website (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment).

School Holiday Activities

The school holidays are a great opportunity for students to extend their learning in informal settings, relax and prepare for their final term. The Gold Coast City Council and Wesley Mission have a fabulous program of free school holiday activities, run through Thrower House (across the road from PBC). For details, go to http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/documents/bf/thrower-holiday-program.pdf.

Students are also encouraged to visit some of the many natural settings, athletic facilities, museums and art galleries. Students can use their free time to prepare or update their resumes. They can see Mrs Shreeve at the Pathways Centre in Y block to collect a Resume Pack, which provides guidelines on how to do this. Students can also spend time perusing University websites for courses and scholarships. There are scholarships for so many different personal circumstances and courses. Familarising themselves with these scholarships can help give students goals to work towards. Finally, students may consider using some of their time to ‘give back’ to their community, with the guidance and support of parents. Students undertaking voluntary work can be acknowledged through PBC’s Community Service scheme.
