GC Secondary School Captains Leadership Summit – 2019

This week I was privileged enough to be invited to spend three days on camp with our student leadership group for 2020, as they participated in the Gold Coast Secondary School Captains Leadership Summit Program at the Runaway Bay Sport and Leadership Excellence Centre. The program is based around immersing the students in a course based on learning about the theory of leadership, building communication and public speaking skills and exploring/developing their own leadership style. The students also had to create, plan and present an ‘Innovative Action Plan’ to their school administration team, based on what project they would like to lead in order to benefit the student community at PBC for 2020. They did a fantastic job on this and I look forward to seeing them leave their legacy at PBC through achieving completion of their project next year.

The students got the opportunity to hear presentations from respected members of the Gold Coast community, and learn from their experiences in a leadership role. Some of the presenters included: Moyra Major (Hot Tomato Radio Presenter), Marlena Katene (Music Journalist / Advocate for People with Disabilities / Entrepreneur), Mark Knowles (Australian Hockey Captain and Flag Bearer at GC Commonwealth Games) and David Crisafulli (State Member for Broadwater). These talks highlighted both the challenges and rewards that lie ahead in being a leader, and the skills necessary to work in a team environment.

Overall our students represented PBC with great pride and networked well with other students from several GC State Secondary Schools, forming positive relationships that they will keep in the future. The students are to be commended for how they engaged in the program and worked collaboratively to deliver an excellent presentation at the end of the three days. I have no doubt that PBC will be in good hands in 2020 with this outstanding group of young people. Well done Team!
