Science club
For semester 1, Science Club has been investigating movement as part of our Moving About unit. Term 1 focused on flight and movement of vehicles, with clubbers treated to a sailing session on Currumbin Creek, which was great fun. Clubbers conducted a range of activities investigating forces, Newton’s Laws, Bernoulli’s’ Principle and the Coanda effect. Term 2 focused on how bones, muscles, tendons and ligaments work together to allow for movement. Clubbers looked at the inside of bones, dissected a chicken wing and chicken feet, looked at different types of bones and joints, tested their hand strength, and observed how tendons in their hands work. At the end of each term, we finish with a break up party and activity. Term 1 we finished with a paper plane competition; term 2 clubbers were given the challenge to put together a disarticulated skeleton, and Abbie O’Connell was awarded the student with the greatest grip strength.
Science club is always open to new members from all year levels. Each week clubbers participate in fun science activities, along with opportunities to participate in extra-curricular activities throughout the year. At the end of term 1, clubbers went to Brisbane to attend the World Science Festival where they participated in a SparkLab workshop, a museum visit including SparkLab Science Bar, and a talk with Dr Karl.
The term 3 topic is Species Survival, which is the 2024 National Science Week theme. As always, clubbers will be conducting hands-on activities and an excursion is also planned with a focus on keystone species. Science club runs each Thursday during lunch 1 in E2, so just bring you lunch and come along and join in on the fun – there are door prizes each week too!
