Senior Secondary Update

It has been another great fortnight in Senior Secondary with particular thanks going to our wonderful Student Council who organised a Year 12 team novelty night- Granny Bingo. This event, held last Wednesday evening, saw close to 250 Year 12 students attend to spend time with their peers and build relationships in their final year of schooling.

Year 11 and 12 students also had the opportunity in the last fortnight to attend the University Showcase hosted at PBC. This event saw our local university partners along with a number of others offer guidance around scholarships, applications and the university experience. We thank the following institutions for their attendance:

  • Griffith University
  • University of Southern Queensland
  • University of Queensland
  • QUT
  • Bond University
  • James Cook University
  • Southern Cross University
  • Australian Catholic University
  • QTAC

Senior Study Skills - Griffith Uni On-campus day

Permission forms have been distributed during Year 11 and 12 assemblies in Week 7 to those students interested to attend the first Griffith University on-campus experience day on Wednesday 26 April (GC6 day). If students were absent or missed out they can collect one from Y block student services for the next week. Permission forms are due back by Wednesday Week 10.

Any questions please contact the Senior Study Skills Coordinator, Deb Kerwick.

Assessment

Many Year 11 classes will have an interim piece of assessment to complete this week. The timetable for these exams have been published on the school website.

Year 11 students will finalise their Unit 1 assessment in Week 4/5 of Term 2 in mid-May this year. As per QCAA guidelines students cannot change subjects mid Unit so no subject changes are available to Year 11s until late May.

Year 10 and 12 students commence shutdown on Wednesday of Week 10 of term (29 to 31 March). The timetable for senior assessment and the school assessment policy has been published on the school website: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment

All students need to be aware of the date, room and time of their scheduled exam. During shutdown students only have to attend school for scheduled exams or study sessions.

All assessment tasks are due at 9:00am on the due date, not during class time. Students who are absent for an exam will need to provide a medical certificate and apply for a change of date with their HOD on the next day they are at school. Similarly students who are applying for an extension or special consideration will need to download an extension/change of date form from the school website and submit to their relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date.

VETis courses

All Senior students are eligible to receive VET in School (VETis) funding to complete a VET certificate that the government deem are in demand. Many students utilise this funding in timetabled classes for example Construction, Health Services, and Hospitality. Other VETis courses are advertised in the student notices and school newsletter. These may include going to an outside college or provider 1 day per week (eg. TAFE). Students who are not aiming for a tertiary pathway are particularly encouraged to complete a VETis funded course as this will increase their chance of gaining employment once they leave school. Please contact Mr McDougall n Y Block if you require more information.
