Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Congratulations to the Environmental Sustainability Team who coordinated Clean-up Australia Day (Schools) with the Leo’s (Young Lions). PBC hosted a beach and waterway clean-up on Friday 1 March. Students, staff, their families and members of the local community removed buckets of litter from the mangroves, creek and beach. Immediately after the clean-up there was a screening of the new documentary film, Beauty and the Reef. This film, directed and produced by local filmmaker Lin Sutherland, documents the impact of climate change on The Great Barrier Reef and outlines how we can create change to help preserve this natural wonder. After the screening there was a Q & A session with Lin and special guests. The Environmental Sustainability Team are also instrumental in our container collection program and they have plans to move into paper and organic waste recycling.

PBC has been working with Currumbin SS, the respective P&C Associations and local police to lobby for traffic signals on Thrower Drive (outside the pool) to replace the pedestrian crossing. With approximately 1,000 PBC students and an additional 100 Currumbin SS students using the crossing, there is a need for regulated student foot traffic to ease the vehicle traffic build up caused by such constant use of the crossing. Unfortunately, school staff are not authorised to give students directions at the crossing and the Department of Transport have indicated that high schools are not eligible for School Crossings.

The school will be changing providers for our point of sale retail operations. In changing our point of sale provider we will be able to speed up transactions and offer more points of sale in the uniform shop and tuckshop to prevent excessive wait times and queues. We will also examine the $5 minimum sale in the canteen for the students and the possibility of online ordering and / or credit for the canteen and uniform shop to make life easier for parents since credit card transactions over the phone were stopped by the Department.

Regards,

Chris Capra
Executive Principal

Senior School Update

It has been a busy start to the year with many students signing up for school based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATs). Recently the 2018 Year 12 results were published by the QCAA, a point we are particularly proud of at PBC, is our school boasting the highest number of SATs completed by students’ at School in Queensland. Pictured is current PBC student, Laquisa Khan, who was presented with the Rising Star Award at the Coolangatta Surf Club staff awards last week.

Laquisa is one of PBC’s amazing school based trainees completing a Cert 3 in Hospitality.

The Pathway Centre has many school based traineeships available this term giving students wonderful opportunities and industry experience.

Assessment

Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 have been uploaded to the school website. Click on the ‘Curriculum’ tab and then ‘Testing and Assessment’. Students can also download this information from the K drive on the school’s network. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Testingandassessment/Pages/Testingandassessment.aspx

Shutdown timetables have also been uploaded onto the school website. Parents are reminded that exams will be in Week 8 and 9 of each term for Years 10 and 12. Year 11 students do not have a shutdown this term and are required to attend school every day. All Year 11 assessment will be finalised in Week 7 and 8 of Term 1. Year 11 students will commence new work in Weeks 8 and 9 of this term. Students need to ensure that they appropriately manage their time and do not leave study and assignments to the last minute as they will have numerous assessment items due in Week 7 and 8.

All students and parents need to be aware of the Assessment Policy at the school to coincide with the new QCE system. The policy has been published on the school website. As per the previous policy, assessment such as assignments are due at 9:00 am on the due date and teachers must make a decision on the evidence which has been submitted at that time. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students requiring extensions need to apply to the relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date. This policy has some changes in regards to special provision which has had a terminology change to Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA); please refer to the published document for more detailed information.

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Supportandresources/Formsanddocuments/Documents/senior-school-documents/ss-assessment-policy-2019.pdf

Year 10

Year 10 students are again reminded that their results in Semester 1 will determine their pathway and subject availability in Years 11 and 12. To study an ATAR pathway students need to be achieving at least a B level in English and Maths. If students wish to study senior Science subjects they also need to be achieving at least a B level in Year 10 Science (Academic Excellence students will have slightly different cut offs).

Year 10s are also reminded that they can commence School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATS) in Year 10. These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, 8 QCE points (equivalent of 2 subjects) and a Certificate 3 qualification which may provide tertiary options.

Year 11

Year 11 students will need to have very good time management in 2019 as the units for each subject are only 7 weeks in length including assessment.

In the new QCE, unit credits are banked into each students learning account at the end of each unit as opposed to the end of Year 12 in the old system. The implication for this is that students who are not engaged in learning and perform poorly in a number of subjects could find themselves ineligible for the QCE as early as Week 5 Term 2 (20 May). Students have been repeatedly reminded of this and will need to ensure that they are actively engaged in all classes at all times.

Many students will have completed traineeships and higher VET certificates before they sit external exams in November 2020. This will provide students with extra QCE points and help ensure that they get the QCE even if they have a poor external exam. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block to register for a traineeship.

Any current Year 11 student wishing to commence a Diploma of Business course on a Wednesday afternoon should contact Mr McDougall.

Middle School Update

Thank you to the new families who have given us such great feedback about how their young person has transitioned to PBC. It was pleasing to hear how happy students are feeling about being welcomed into the PBC family which has been passed on by Sue Murray our Middle School Student Services Officer.

Queensland Cybersafety IT team

We had the pleasure of the Queensland Cybersafety IT team delivering presentations to our Year 7 and Year 8 students in Week 5. Key messages for students were to be positive, respectful and safe when using social media so they can protect their digital footprint for later in life especially when part-time employment may be an option. Year 7 students predominantly favoured Snapchat while Year 8 used Instagram. Students were advised to read the terms and conditions of each digital platform as many students are in breach of age limits for using different platforms.

Student tips

Parent tips

https://kidshelpline.com.au/get-help/webchat-counselling

As a school community of staff, parents and students we can’t be informed enough about how we can keep our students safe on the internet. If you have any feedback about this event or suggestions about other parent information evenings that would be relevant to you, please email Wendy Wise on parentsupport@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au.

Assessment Calendar

Assessment calendars were emailed to every parent and caregiver during Week 4. Students should now transfer important dates and relevant assignment deadlines into their diaries. Parents and students may also find it useful to list this information where it is easily accessible in the home – many use the refrigerator - so that they can predict the busy times ahead and plan for them. Meeting assignment deadlines is not only an equity issue; it teaches important life skills. Please familiarise yourself with the PBC Assessment Policy on the school website.

Support for Student Learning

Now that classes are settling into routine and assessment is occurring, some students may feel daunted by aspects of their workload. Telling this to the class teacher is really important as they are best positioned to support your child. For those students who would like further help in their core subjects of Maths, English, Science and History, as well as Languages and Business, teachers at PBC volunteer their time to provide free tutoring. These tutoring sessions are held each Tuesday afternoon from 3:15-4:00pm, in room IDT02. Students should bring along their assignments and homework. Last week, about 20 students made use of this opportunity. Please note that only PBC students may attend.

Attendance

The Middle School attendance target is 95% and ‘Every Day Counts’ is a priority for our students, staff and parent/caregivers to optimise student achievement and wellbeing. The impact of 5 days absence per term results in one month non-attendance during the school year. Parent/caregivers will receive non-attendance letters if your child has had 5 or more unexplained absences this year.

Uniform

PBC SH is a uniform school and all students enrolling here are expected to accept and support these standards of dress as determined by the Executive Principal and supported by the PBC P&C. This policy is an integral part of our school security program and supports the Department of Education, Training and Education Workplace Health and Safety Policy. The full uniform code is available from the school website.

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Supportandresources/Formsanddocuments/Documents/uniform/uniform-code-2019.pdf

In the Middle School we are monitoring correct polishable black shoes, plain white socks that cover the ankle and jewellery compliance (1 small discreet earring in each ear, a wrist watch is optional and no visible facial piercings.

Late to School

We also have high expectations for students to arrive approximately at 8:30am so they are ready for CARE class at 9:00am and have a positive start to each day. The Optima Team have aligned our Middle School Student Late Process to the recent successful uniform non-compliance steps. We thank all parent/caregivers for your support in prioritising attendance and for our students to follow the Reds Pledge to make a commitment to uphold the Reds’ tradition, to relentlessly strive to be their best self and to actively support others to do the same. Any student that is late to PBC without an approved absence will follow this process.

QuickSmart

This week, we were delighted that Quicksmart commenced its sixth year at PBC.

Quicksmart is a literacy and numeracy intervention program designed by the University of New England. It operates in over 600 schools, predominately in NSW. Students participate three times a week, for half hour blocks, to bridge gaps in their reading or essential mathematics. The aim is automaticity, which frees up working memory to enable the students to more effectively learn in the classroom. Previous years’ results show that it is highly effective in building learning and students’ confidence in the classroom.

In 2019, foundation teacher aides Liz Carter and Carol Johnson are continuing their running of the program. We also welcome Marissa Lawry to the team. Marissa may be already familiar to some parents as she has undertaken other roles at PBC. Each of our teacher aides has participated in specialist training in order to run the program to its greatest effect.

All of the students who we’ve checked in with this week have been enjoying Quicksmart. One student commented: “Quicksmart is SO good. It’s challenging – but not so challenging that it makes you want to give up”.

Over 60 students are participating in Quicksmart this year and we look forward to reporting on their improvements. Should you have any questions concerning Quicksmart, please contact the Head of Department Middle School, Sharon Hillcoat.

One2One Learning Program

We would like to remind parents of Year 7 children that we recommend their child transports their new laptop in a lightweight hard shell case to protect it from accidental damage and saving them $100s by avoiding repairs. Cases do not need to be expensive, and suitable ones can be found in Kmart, Big W and Target. We recommend against a soft neoprene wetsuit material style case and suggest that hard shell types are far more effective.

University of Waterloo Timeline of Elements Project

Last year we were notified that we were successful in our application to design an element tile for the University of Waterloo Timeline of Elements project. Schools from over 26 different countries were given one of 118 element in this International Year of the Periodic Table project. Only six Australian schools are participating in this international project. PBC will be completing a tile for the element 99 - Einsteinium – an element named after famous scientist Albert Einstein.

The project was led by PBC STEM Ambassadors, students Isabelle Richters and Jaime Pryor. They designed the tile, along with writing a supplementary description of the reasoning behind the design. Year 11 student Lily de Groot also contributed to the design, and was solely responsible for creating the actual artwork for the tile. Her work, along with the other student works from across the globe, is being used to produce a periodic table. The periodic table will be produced as a classroom poster, a public website and a wall mural in the Science Teaching Complex at the University of Waterloo.

Below is the supplementary description written by Isabelle and Jaime:

Einsteinium is a synthetic element that was first discovered in 1952 during the examination of debris of the first hydrogen bomb. It was discovered by scientist Albert Ghiorso and his team, and named after renowned physicist Albert Einstein. A mushroom cloud and radioactive hazard sign was incorporated into the design to represent how the element was discovered and its radioactive properties. A picture of Albert Ghiorso has been placed front and centre with silhouettes of people leading off to either side of the tile: this represents the team of people who discovered the element. The beach setting, with the ocean in the background, represents the place where the bomb was tested: the Pacific Ocean. Lastly, the use of small, trace amounts of glitter on the poster represent just the small amounts of the element created at the time for observation (in part due to such a small half-life), and the fact that it glows blue in the dark as a result of the release of energy during radioactive decay.

7 Science

Year 7 science students have started the year investigating classification and ways to group organisms based on physical characteristics. Ask your child what a dichotomous key is and what it is used for. Challenge them to a race to find the answers in the activity below:

8 Science

If you walked around the Middle School in Week 4 you probably would have heard a lot of shrieking coming from O block. Students in Year 8 have been studying a chemistry unit focussing on the particle model of matter. Students were treated with a liquid nitrogen and dry ice demonstration to observe changes of state in matter. With temperatures reaching -196oC and -78oC respectively these chemical compounds are very effective in demonstrating how temperature effects matter. Students watched in awe as teachers demonstrated how carbon dioxide sublimating (changing state from a solid to a gas) can blow up a balloon and when dry ice is placed in hot water it bubbles furiously sublimating to gas due to the sudden change in temperature. The liquid nitrogen was more exciting with fresh flowers and fruit, frozen into a glass like state, which shatter when touched and a blown up balloon that shrunk when immersed in the liquid nitrogen and then expanded again when taken out. The piece de resistance and the one that ensured the most amount of astonishment was the de-fuzzed tennis ball which was immersed in liquid nitrogen and thrown against the floor. The result was a loud explosion of glass like rubber in all directions with many students shrieking in surprise!

9 Science

At PBC we are so lucky to have access to the Currumbin Creek and the adjacent nature reserves. This term Year 9 students have been investigating human impacts on the Beree Badalla reserve. Over the last few weeks students have collected biotic and abiotic data to determine the overall health of the ecosystem. A research report detailing overall findings will be due in week 8.

Sustainability News

Clean-Up Australia Day

On Friday 1 March, students, teachers and parents of the PBC community banded together to do our part in this year’s Clean-Up Australia Day. The 1 ½ hour clean-up was concluded with a Leo’s Club famous sausage sizzle as the extended community was welcomed into the theatre to view Beauty and the Reef; a documentary directed and staring Lin Sutherland. So how has PBC made a difference for Australia’s sustainability?

First the good news – Australians are pretty good at household recycling. In 2009, almost all Australian households (98%) reported that they recycled waste. We are one of the world champions. Well done to all of us!

But we will not preserve our environment through household recycling along. This is but another piece of the 1000-piece puzzle that we need to solve to stop the wasting of our natural resources. When it comes to waste, we are brilliant at creating it. Most of us buy and use more than we could ever need. Only 1% of all items purchased are still in use six months later.

According to The Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average Australian creates just over 2,000kgs of waste each year. Each household spends a couple thousand dollars on goods purchased but were never used. And according to Craig Reucasse (War on Waste) the average Australian family throws out over $3,500 worth of food every year – that’s about a tonne!

But it only takes one person to make a difference, and with 50 or so volunteers cleaning our school environment last Friday, PBC has made a huge difference in preserving this beauty we call home.

District Swimming News

PBC sent a strong team of talented swimmers to Oceanic District Swimming at Pizzey Park Swimming complex last week.

In the midst of Cyclone Oma students still managed to put on their best performance placing PBC second overall in the district. We had 3 age champions rise to the occasion in Gemma Edwards, Maverick McCarthy and Tallan Raftery.

14 students will now race at the South Coast Competition taking place today! Good luck to these competitors and Go Reds!

House Update

Sustainability Photo Competition #REDSGOGREEN

In Term 3 2018, care classes chose and developed a community project based on one of the three banners of humanity, food insecurities and sustainability. A1S and A3M both chose to develop an inter-house competition based around sustainability, and this term, their hard work has come to life. Their competition titled #REDSGOGREEN is an online competition that requires students to submit a photo of themselves partaking in a sustainable practice. Such practices may include growing veges at home, composting, recycling, upcycling, contributing to the PBC Container Refund Scheme, walking instead of driving or simply putting their litter in the bins.

A great time to take a photo was during the Clean Up Australia day beach and waterways clean up last Friday. All photos must include a thumbs up to verify the photo as a valid entry. See the examples that have been submitted below. Please encourage your student to get involved in this Interhouse competition which earns both House Points and helps them develop great habits.

Dodgeball

Our Dodgeball Grand Finals will be held over the next two weeks, with the ultimate champions crowned Monday Week 7. The comp has been an overwhelming success with participation numbers high. Thanks to all of our student leaders who have helped to organise and run this competition.

It’s been great to catch up with our students at our House Assemblies. A reminder to both students and parents, to let your Care Teacher, or House Leader know about any of your great achievements, so that you can be recognised within your House. Recognising and celebrating student achievements are one of our key priorities in House this year.

PBC Alleygators Rugby Club

This year the PBC Alleygators Rugby club has targeted our teenaged teams as an important focus for the future of our club. We have implemented a Rugby Pathways focus, which will see the development for Boys and Girls from U13’s through to U17’s, as we look to attract new players to these teams.
