Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to the 2019 school year. School recommenced last week for some of our eager Year 11 students as they undertook vocational educational training to bank early credit points for their Qld Certificate of Education. For the rest of our students, school recommenced on Tuesday. It appears that we will start the year with approximately 2520 students of which 424 are our new Year 7s.
Over the holidays the $12m worth of capital works continued with the major tasks of (1) reroofing the sports hall, (2) refurbishing E block and (3) building the new library continuing. The sports hall will now be finished at Easter with remaining roof works to be completed and a major refurbishment of the playing floor surface to be undertaken. E block should be ready for use in a few weeks and the library precinct is on track for completion in October.
This term we welcome back Anita Sgalippa as Principal – Middle School (Years 7 to 9) after a successful nine months as the Principal of Tallebudgera SS. Wendy Wise remains as the Deputy Principal of Middle School. Alyce Bradford (formerly Cleary) is the Principal of Senior Secondary and Mitchell Kennedy the Deputy Principal (Years 10 to 12).
As the school transitions to a uniform which includes socks, it is an expectation that by 2020, all students will be in the new school socks. With an unexpected increase in enrolments in Years 8 to 10, we have sold out of some sizes in the red sports shorts. Students will be able to wear alternate clothing to the red shorts whilst at school until the new stock arrives. Students will still need to enter and exit the school in a full school uniform (not mixed and matched sports / formal uniforms).
The school swimming carnivals are next week. Students have permission notes to return, should they wish to come along. Last year we had record numbers of students come along and participate in the championship races, social races and fun based events. There is something to do for everyone on the day and we encourage all students to come along and represent their House.
Regards,
Chris Capra

Senior School Update
Welcome back to our parents and Senior students to what promises to be a fulfilling and jam-packed 2019. A particularly warm welcome to our new Year 10 community, who transition into the Senior School as a cohort with a wonderful reputation for success in all facets of their schooling from their days as Year 9s.
With our first week underway, all Senior students have adjusted to their timetables well and we are pleased to report have maturely engaged with what can be a very rigorous week after such a long break. It was particularly pleasing to see our Senior students leading the way with the new CARE curriculum, which in 2019 focuses on the Positive Education principles of resilience and grit, as well as our ongoing commitment to improving our sustainable practices as a school community.
This year sees a few changes in the Senior School, our Year 12 cohort complete schooling with the QCE and OP system; whilst our Year 11s commence with the new QCE and ATAR system of tertiary entrance. We also welcome Ms Jennifer Attard in the Dean of Studies and Students – Year 12. Ms Attard joins us from Victoria.
“I am very excited to be joining the PBC Team in the role of Dean of Studies and Dean of Students (Year 12). I have moved to the Sunshine State from Victoria, where I have worked in both city and rural educational settings. I trust that my experience in the Victorian senior education sector where externally-set examinations and ATAR are already embedded will support the introduction of the new QCE system at PBC. The focus of my Dean of Studies role will be to support senior school in incorporating essential study skills across all learning areas so that our students are very well prepared for external exams which commence in 2020. I look forward to meeting and speaking with parents as the year goes on. My office is in Y Block – please feel free to email, call or visit.” Ms Jennifer Attard
Assessment policy
As the year commences, please take the time to familiarise yourself with our Senior Assessment Policy, Uniform Policy and Communications Policy (https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Supportandresources/Formsanddocuments/Documents/senior-school-documents/ss-assessment-policy-2019.pdf) which underpin our expectations of every Senior student. These policies are in place to ensure our school is a supportive environment conducive to both learning and achieving the outstanding results for which we have become renowned.
As per the previous policy assessment such as assignments etc. are due at 9:00 am on the due date and teachers must make a decision on the evidence which has been submitted at that time. Late assignments will not be accepted. Students requiring extensions need to apply to the relevant Head of Department at least 48 hours before the due date. This policy has some changes in regards to special provision which has had a terminology change to Access Arrangements and Reasonable Adjustments (AARA); please refer to the published document for more detailed information.
Assessment Calendars
Assessment Calendars for Years 10, 11 and 12 will soon be uploaded to the school website. Click on the curriculum tab and then under Testing and Assessment. Students can also download this information from the K drive on the school’s network. This information will be useful for parents and students when planning their study timetable.
https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/
Please note that Year 11 assessment will be finalised in Weeks 7 and 8 of term to accommodate the new system; all Year 10 and 12 assessment will be finalised by the middle of Week 9.
Subject changes have now been finalised. Students will have the opportunity to change classes at the end of the semester or Unit.
Useful websites
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority has created a new website. This is a great source of information on the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR), Senior Education Training (SET) Plan, future pathways, subjects and assessment.
https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html
The Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre has released a new tertiary course search engine. This is a new National higher education admissions platform which will be useful for students researching nationwide tertiary options.
https://www.courseseeker.edu.au/
Griffith University has updated their admissions pathways. This document highlights the large range of courses that students can apply for a Griffith University with VET qualifications such as Certificate III, IV or Diploma in 2020.
https://www.griffith.edu.au/apply/admission-pathways/vet
Year 10
Year 10 students are again reminded that their results in Semester 1 will determine their pathway and subject availability in Years 11 and 12. To study an ATAR pathway students need to be achieving at least a B level in English and Maths. If students wish to study senior Science subjects they also need to be achieving at least a C level in Year 10 Science, (Academic Excellence students will have slightly different cut offs).
Year 10s are also reminded that they can commence School based apprenticeships and traineeships (SATS) in Year 10. These courses provide students with paid employment and work skills, 8 QCE points (equivalent of 2 subjects) and a Certificate III qualification which may provide tertiary options.
Year 11
Year 11 students will need to have very good time management in 2019 as the units for each subject are only 7 weeks in length including assessment.
In the new QCE unit credits are banked into each students learning account at the end of each unit as opposed to the end of Year 12 in the old system. The implication for this is that students who are not engaged in learning and perform poorly in a number of subjects could find themselves ineligible for the QCE as early as Week 5 Term 2 (20 May). Students have been repeatedly reminded of this and will need to ensure that they are actively engaged in all classes at all times.
Many students will have completed Traineeships and higher VET certificates before they sit external exams in November 2020. This will provide students with extra QCE points and help ensure that they get the QCE even if they have a poor external exam. Please see Ms Shreeve in Y block to register for a Traineeship.
Year 12
Year 12 OP students commenced QCS classes on Wednesday at 8:00am, these students will be able to leave school during Wednesday sport time to compensate for this early start; though Sport Excellence students will have to attend sport.
The first QCS after school Master Class is on Tuesday 12 February from 3:15 to 4:45pm. All OP students should be attending this session to help maximise their performance on the QCS test and consequently improve student OPs.
Students are again reminded that all students need to be eligible for a Queensland Certificate of Education to remain enrolled in Senior Schooling. For students in Year 11 and 12 this means they must be passing at least 5 of their 6 subjects (regardless of whether or not they are completing a traineeship). All students who are doing VET subjects must be up to date at the end of each term. Time will be allocated during shutdown to ensure that these students are up to date. Students who do not complete their competencies will have their enrolment reviewed.
Pathway Centre
Welcome back for another year! There are a lot of exciting traineeship opportunities available in the Pathway Centre Y Block this term. See attached list of current opportunities.

Anita Sgalippa, Principal Middle School
PBC’s Middle School has commenced with energy and enthusiasm, as students were introduced to both their Care Classes and new academic classes. There has been a positive buzz about the Middle School that augurs well for the students’ endeavours. For Year 7, this is a time of great change, while in Years 8 and 9, students are adjusting to the raised expectations and demands on their learning.
Assessment Calendar
Each student has received a PBC Student Planner, in which they record their homework, important dates and assignment deadlines. To help students get organised and stay organised, the Assessment Calendar will be published on the PBC website by the beginning of Week 3 and emailed to parents. Parents and students can easily access this information so that they can predict the busy times and plan for them. Students should also be using their student planners to note homework and important dates.
Assessment Policy
Meeting deadlines teaches important life skills and provides an equitable assessment environment. Please familiarise yourself with the PBC assessment policy on the school website.
Support for Student Learning
In these first few weeks, some students may feel daunted by aspects of their schoolwork. Telling this to the class teacher is really important as they are best positioned to support your child. For those students who would like further help in their core subjects of Maths, English, Science and History; teachers at PBC volunteer their time to provide free tutoring. These tutoring sessions are held in the Room IDT2 each Tuesday afternoon from 3:15-4:00pm starting from Week 3. Students should bring along their assignments and homework.
Middle School Swimming Carnival Coming Up!
This year’s Carnival will be held on Tuesday 12 February, at the Palm Beach Aquatic Centre, next door to PBC. Students are encouraged to dress in House colours and take an active part in races, novelty events and other activities. Parents are welcome to attend and watch the races. Further information will be coming home soon. Please ensure that your child returns their permission slip so they can be part of the festivities!
Maths News
Starting at high school is overwhelming. Students are not just contending with an increased workload, they are also expected to be organised for every subject, every day. Being organised may be a challenge initially for your young person, however this will be a significant focus this year. Student planners will play a crucial role in helping students to develop productive routines and arrive to their subjects ready to learn. Being organised in Math means:
- All required equipment and books are brought for each lesson.
- Homework is completed on time.
- Assessment drafts and finals are submitted by the due dates and exam revision is completed.
To ensure students develop the knowledge and skills to use mathematics confidently across other learning areas at school and in their lives more broadly Year 7 students now attend 4 lessons of maths per week to allow extra numeracy practice in our “Visible Numeracy” program. Developed by our specialist teachers the Visible Numeracy Program focuses on building students capability in Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and Probability and Statistics; particularly focusing on mental maths and problem solving skills. These 4 x 20min sessions will take place at the beginning of each maths lesson. Students will have already started this program. If you are interested ask to see your child’s visible numeracy booklet or better yet let them challenge you to one of our speed math challenges.
We have had some resent requests for recommendations for tutoring. Our advice is to utilise the Tuesday afternoon homework club held in the TTC. Whether it be for help with homework, assessment or general content in English, Humanities, Science or Mathematics specialist teachers will be available to help your child.
A note about calculators. Students are expected to have their own scientific calculator for all Maths lessons. Casio is the preferred model (see image below) at PBC but any scientific calculator is acceptable. Students are not permitted to use their mobile phones as a calculator. Please make sure that your son or daughter is prepared for every Maths lesson by bringing a calculator to school every day. Thank you for your support with this.

House Update
Swimming Carnival 2019
While we all love holidays, we also love jumping straight into the term with a huge splash! And that’s exactly what we’re doing here at PBC in Term 1! The PBC Swimming Carnivals will be held in Week 3. With the amazing size of our school and depth of talent, the Carnival is run over two days, with Middle School (Years 7, 8, 9) competing Tuesday 12 February and Senior School (Years 10,11, 12) Wednesday 13 February.
The Swimming Carnival offers something for everyone. Competitive swimmers can take on the best of the best and qualify for District swimming in Breaststroke, Freestyle, Butterfly and Backstroke. Participation and Novelty events in the pool give everyone the chance to participate and earn valuable House Points on the day. Alternative activities are also available as an option to students. Activities such as the Dunk Tank, Giant inflatable Slip and Slide and inflatable Obstacle course will be set on the grassed areas around the pool. To access these, students will need to purchase a wristband for $5. Wristbands will be on sale Week 2 Friday and Week 3 Monday.
A sausage sizzle will be run by the Student Council, with all money raised donated to the school’s 2019 charity. The school canteen will also be bringing some lunch items across to the pool for students to purchase and the pool shop will be selling drinks and lollies. Students will not be allowed to leave the pool precinct throughout the day. Students will be released from the pool at 3:05pm (Tues) and 2:30pm (Wed).
Please be aware of the following dresscode:
- Appropriate modest swimwear
- Students must wear a sleeved t-shirt (House colour preferred)
- A rash shirt is highly recommended whilst in the water
- Students must wear enclosed footwear to and from the pool
- Hat
DodgeBall
In addition to the swimming carnival in Week 3, this term sees the return of PBC Dodgeball. The competition will run over 4 weeks, with students competing in care class teams during first breaks. This comp is a fun and exciting way for care classes to interact with each other and also earn participation points for their House! The Phoenicians, Athenians and Spartans are adamant that the Vikings will not be lifting the Cup for a 3rd year running! So get involved kids, and represent your House with pride!
The Dodgeball Finals will be held in Week 6 and should be quite the spectacle! Later in the term, students will be invited to participate in a Sustainability Photographic competition and Spelling Bee. Details to follow.
Care Class
Care Classes have spent the first two days welcoming new class members and setting the tone for a great year of Care and House. The focus in Term 1 is on building Resilience and Grit, with school priorities of Sustainability and the re-introduction of PBL also being embedded into Care lessons. House activities will also be built into Care lessons, increasing participation and competition within Intra House and Inter House competitions. A reminder that students must be in Care from 9:00am each and every day. Care class is a great opportunity for students to get to know students in other grades and foster meaningful relationships with both their classmates and Care teacher. We look forward to a great 2019!!

Container Deposit Scheme
PBC has done an amazing job of cashing in on the container deposit scheme since it launched in Queensland on 1 November, 2018. In the last six weeks of the school year, we collected more than 20,000 drink containers raising more than $2,000 for the school. Our last container collection of the year was the best one yet, generating more than $1,000 and featuring Heather, Dan and Ben the Sea FM Morning Crew broadcasting live from the school grounds. Container drop offs continued over the holidays and we are fast approaching $3,000 with the donations we received in December and January.
As the new school year gets underway, we are keen to build on this momentum. At school, students can place their empty drink containers in one of the 21 blue bins across the campus. At home, we encourage all students, parents, staff, and members of the local community to continue collecting their eligible containers and donating them to the school every fortnight. We also encourage you to ask your neighbours, friends, workmates and extended family members to get on board too. Our next collection is happening on Wednesday 6 February between 7:00 and 9:00am at the Reds Gate on the oval.
If each of PBC’s 2,500 students collected one orange bag of eligible beverage containers per fortnight, that would equate to $15,000 a fortnight or $300,000 a year for PBC. This money will be used to fund student-voted sustainability initiatives around the school.
Most drink containers between 150mL and 3L are eligible for the 10c refund. Eligible containers include poppers, soft drink cans and bottles, flavoured milk bottles or cartons, and water bottles. Look for the “10c Refund in SA/NT” on the container if you’re not sure. Containers not part of the scheme include plain milk containers, pure juice containers 1L or larger, wine bottles and pure spirits bottles. At PBC, we accept all eligible containers, including glass and empty alcohol containers. Orange bags can be collected from school but containers can also be returned in a plastic bag or a cardboard box if you don’t have an orange bag. Each bag returned to the school will also earn points for your House.
We hope to see you Wednesday 6 February for the first container collection for the school year. Together, we can have a huge positive impact on the school and local community. Thanks for the tremendous amount of support we have had so far!
For more information on container eligibility, check out this webpage. There is a comprehensive list in PDF form at the bottom of the page.
Cert II in Sampling and Measurement
From 22 to 25 January, 38 senior PBC students suited up in hard hats and high vis, to earn themselves a Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement. Run by Leichhardt Education and Training, the course offered students technical training in skills applied to scientific sampling and measurement in field situations. Developed by scientists and large mining companies the course aims to teach the practices of taking unbiased field samples, and the scientific theory surrounding sampling. Although the description of the course reads Sampling and Measurement, students have also grasped an understanding of the importance of workplace health and safety (WHS) and how to maintain environmental sustainability when performing field studies.
“Students will develop varying skills that they can apply to senior school sciences. It also gives them skills that they will be able to transport over to university in the STEM subjects. Our focus is on the development of science. Also, learning about how science is applied in the real world. I think it’s important for you guys to learn the positives and negatives of the job.” Said Leichhardt Education owner Ari Koskela.
“This group, honestly, has been awesome. It is clear that they have worked together in the past. Their mathematics and science skills are excellent and this school has performed really well, particularly for their age. So the teachers should get a pat on the back and so should the students who took part in this course, because they’ve done a lot of work and I think you are becoming well prepared, young STEM professionals.” Commented Ari on the effort displayed by our PBC students.
“Our community, in Australia, needs young people to step into the STEM subjects. As older people, like me, are retiring, who’s going to come and take up the mantle?”

Say No to Drugs
7 February 2019, PBC Theatre @ 6:00pm
PBC will host Tony Parsons to deliver ‘Say No to Drugs’ presentations to students, staff and parents/caregivers.
This National drug awareness program provides a pathway to challenge student’s mindsets and assumptions about realities of the drug culture. The aim is to empower students (and parent/caregivers) with the knowledge they need to act courageously and responsibly when students are confronted with the choice of drug use.
Tony Parsons, has worked as a Police Officer for more than 30 years, 25 of those as a detective targeting organised crime syndicates. As an undercover investigation specialist in the field of drug trafficking, Tony has been personally responsible for the investigation, arrest and prosecution of multitudes of high risk and serious drug traffickers, and he has had a critical role in some of Australia’s most high profile drug investigations.
Testimonial - Wayne Bennett – NRL Rugby League Coach
“National Drug Awareness delivers specific and confronting insight into the Australian drug culture and their approach systematically dismantles the flawed perceptions of socially acceptable drug use. They create a pathway to have open conversations with our players on this challenging issue. Singularly the best presentation I have ever seen on illicit drugs.”
You are invited to attend this Parent focused presentation to be held at the PBC Theatre on Thursday 7 February at 6pm.
To RSVP please email events@pbc-shs.eq.edu.au, stating 'Say No' in the subject and advising the number attending.
