Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Awards season is currently in full swing with the school celebrating the achievements of the students for the 2018 school year. The Sports Awards night was an outstanding success with school recognising the achievements of students who have represented their state and nation as individuals and as teams. We had that many students receiving awards this year that we had to restrict the number of guests. Last week also saw the Creative Arts Awards Night recognise the students for their artistic endeavours. Last night PBC held the annual Academic Awards night where we acknowledged the great work demonstrated by the students across all the subjects including the highest academic achievement in each year level. The night included welcoming in the new Student Leaders, announcing the new School Captains Abi Houston and Toby Mayes, Vice Captains Grace Selby and Nick Weeks and culminating in the naming of the 2018 School Dux, Amy Cooper and Runner-Up, Ruby Allen.

This week we farewell the Year 12s and wish them all the best on their future endeavours. As the Year 12s leave, Year 10 and 11 exams commence. For the junior secondary students, it is classes as normal for another four and a half weeks. Teaching and learning activities do not stop for the junior secondary students so they need to be attending school each and every day.

The school has commenced recycling plastic bottles and other drink containers. The students with the support of two teacher coordinators are leading the initiative of recycling drink containers. The money the students raise they will allocated back into school improvement projects of their choice. It is my belief that if every student donated one container a week, the students would raise $10,000 to allocate towards a project of their choice. More information about this scheme will be communicated to the community over the coming weeks.

Regards,
Chris Capra

Senior School Update

Farewell our Class of 2018

On behalf of the Senior School and the wider school community we would like to give our best wishes to the graduating cohort of 2018, who will graduate from PBC on Tuesday 13 November. This group of Year 12 students have served our school with humility, excellence and pride and are a particularly close-knit group of young people. These students are to be commended on the manner in which they have approached their relationships with teachers, coaches and mentors in these final few weeks – they are a group who will leave a lasting legacy on the proud history of our school. Good luck to all of our graduating Year 12 students and congratulations on your many successes.

Social Media Update – Concerning Application - Tellonym

Our school has recently been made aware of a new social media site and app called Tellonym, which is being used by some students across Australian schools. We have had a small number of students commence interaction with this app, which can be used primarily as a platform for anonymous cyberbullying. The concept of this app allows the user to post a question online and have countless anonymous users replied with uncensored responses.

PBC has firm policies in place regarding IT misconduct both inside and outside our school grounds which impact students enrolled at our school. We in turn have firm expectations regarding phone use within our grounds that can be found within our Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students and Communications Device Policy respectively (PBC website). As a school and parent community we can firmly discourage the use of the Tellonym app by our young people. Should your student have access to this app on their personal device, it is the schools recommendation that this be deleted to discourage cyberbullying of any kind.

Please keep an eye out for a Parent Connect Information Session that will be run again in early 2019 by SS and MS Deputy Principals.

For more information regarding inappropriate social media use and the Tellonym app in particular, please access the link below.

Release of year 12 results

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will release student QCEs, OPs and Senior Statements through student learning accounts on the Student Connect website, from 9:00am on Saturday 15 December 2018.

https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au/

Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results. Students will be able to access their results more quickly if they have previously activated their learning account. Students have been emailed and reminded on many occasions to log into this portal to check their account details but many have chosen not to do so.

Senior Education profiles will then be mailed out by the QCAA from Monday 17 December.

OP ineligible students wishing to know their Rank need to contact the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) directly on 1300 GO QTAC (1300 467 822) or visit the link below; as these are not automatically sent out to students.

http://www.qtac.edu.au/

Year 10 and 11 Exams

Year 10 and 11 shutdown exams will commence in the week of 26 to 30 November. The shutdown timetable has been published on the website below. All students may have timetabled exams up to and including the last day.

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Testingandassessment/Pages/Testingandassessment.aspx

Year 11 OP students will be practicing their QCS short response and multiple choice tests during shutdown.

A reminder that all students completing the Certificate II in Sampling and Measurement in January 2019 must attend the timetabled session in shutdown on Thursday 29 November to complete enrolment in the course.

The last day of school for Year 10 and 11 students is Friday 30 November.

Student should by now be well aware that they must be in full school uniform to sit exams and that it is their responsibility to ensure they are present in the correct room with all necessary equipment at least 10 minutes before the exam commences.

A reminder that all drafts and assignments are due before 9:00am on the due date and that exams cannot be given early to students because of other commitments. The school assessment policy is also published on the same link above as shutdown exam timetables.

Year 11

The school is currently offering a Year 12 fast track Diploma of Business class conducted by Prestige Services Training in the timetable for 2018. This course is highly recommended as it gives students a rank equivalent of an OP 9 and a guaranteed pathway to tertiary study. Interested students should contact Mr McDougall in Y block or Ms McQueen in F block.

Year 11 performance monitoring

Year 11 students and parents are again reminded that they need to be passing at least 5 of their 6 classes over 4 semesters to be eligible for a QCE. Students that are at risk will be monitored by senior school administration and parents contacted.

Middle School Update

Last week we celebrated our last OPTIMA assemblies for the year. These ceremonies are a real highlight of our calendar each term. They are a celebration of the achievement of goals but also reward for effort and consistency. It is these characteristics that we seek to develop in our young people here at PBC.

The Blue Optima Award recognises students that have achieved an Excellent for Behaviour and Effort in 5 or more subjects on the Term 3 report card. It was exciting to showcase student achievement aligned to House recognition.

Attendance

‘Every Day Counts’ is a priority for our Middle School students and the 2018 target is 95%. All students will be expected to be in attendance until the end of term. All student attendance is monitored daily and parent/caregivers will receive attendance letters in Week 6 for any child that has had 5 or more unexplained absences this year. An unacceptable attendance record will lead to disciplinary actions as per the Parent Compulsory Schooling Obligation – Failure to attend 178(2) of the Education (General Provisions) Act 2006.

We encourage students to arrive approximately at 8:30am so they are present for CARE class roll marking at 9:00am unless there is a valid excuse for absence.

Leaving early (sign out) notes need to be written and signed by a parent/caregiver and delivered to the Middle School Student Services prior to 8:45am. It is appropriate for you to sign out no more than 3 times a term for an appointment or an activity during school hours.

The sign out note must specify:

  • Thespecific reason for signing out (doctors, dentist, etc)
  • The time & date that you need to sign out of school
  • If a medical appointment, the time, location & professional that you have the appointment with must also be listed.

Uniform

As PBC is a uniform school there are high expectations for all students/parents to continue to support these dress standards for the next five weeks (see the Middle School Student Planner – Uniform Code pg10). We remind all parents black polishable leather/synthetic shoes will also be mandatory for the 2019 formal uniform.

The PBC’s Responsible Behaviour Plan for Students is available for perusal on the school website (newsletter link). Every student is expected to follow the Optima Code ‘Be Respectful, Be a Learner and Be Safe’ during the school day and in with wider community as they are representing PBC SHS.

Middle School Student Leadership

At PBC, we view every child as having leadership potential. Students who display initiative, who are positive role models to others and who are willing to make a positive difference in their school and community are indeed leaders of our school. This year, we have around 200 students in formal leadership positions across PBC.

Following a rigorous process of written applications, interviews and speeches to House Assemblies, we have now selected a group of students from a very talented pool to be Head Prefects of their Houses and leaders of the Middle School in 2019. These students will represent the Middle School in official ceremonies and events, run activities to build school and House spirit and culture, fundraise and serve as the voice of the student body.

Congratulations to the following Year 8 students who will serve PBC in 2019:

Lily Suttle - Athenians
Taj Tilley-Warren - Athenians
Leilani Field -Phoenicians
Alfie McNamee - Phoenicians
Wilson Bradfield - Spartans
Kirra Johnston - Spartans
Isabella Edge - Vikings
Amelia Raitlava - Vikings

Congratulations also to those students who have accepted leadership positions as Sports Captains, Cultural Captains and International Captains in their Houses. We look forward to the energy and ideas you will bring to your new positions.

Thank you to the parents who encouraged their students to apply for a leadership position. We hope that all leadership aspirants will find ways in the coming year to both contribute to PBC and to develop their leadership potential.

Middle School Final Assemblies

We look forward to celebrating the end of our school year and farewelling our Year 9s from the Middle School at our Celebration Evening at the Waterside Room, Currumbin RSL, on 29 November. Please be sure to book your child’s ticket as soon as possible.

We will also hold a final Middle School assembly in Week 9. It will be a combined Year 7, 8 and 9 Assembly at 8:45am on Monday 3 December in the Senior Quad. Students who have earned Top of Subject awards will receive them at this assembly. Parents are very welcome to join us for this occasion.

Finishing the Year Well

We are more than half-way through the term! Please encourage your child to maintain clear routines around homework, study, sleep and exercise, as we prepare for the final weeks and exams.

STEM Girl Power Alumni Event

As STEM ambassadors, we were invited to attend an event to better our STEM leadership and communication skills. We heard from key speakers who told us about their experiences within their career and passions. The two women who spoke to us were Lee Constable and Cecile Godde. Both of them had the opportunity to attend the largest ever all-female voyage to Antarctica. Lee Constable is the host of Network Ten's science TV show Scope and Cecile Godde won the 2018 Queensland women in STEM prize. These women were incredibly inspirational and a highlight of the day. We learnt how to promote and advocate our love for STEM to others, particularly those of a younger generation. We learnt the importance of presenting ideas in a fun and informative way. This day was an important experience as it marked the transition between camp students, which was earlier in the year, to alumni. At lunch we were provided with the opportunity to network and talk to universities to discuss our future. At the end of the day we were presented with STEM girl power alumni badges and certificates. This day was incredibly rewarding and we are very grateful for the STEM opportunities that have been provided to us.

Container Deposit Scheme

PBC Container Refund Scheme

On Thursday 1 November, PBC began an exciting new environmentally sustainable initiative that coincided with the QLD government’s introduction of the Container Refund Scheme. Students at PBC began depositing eligible 10c containers into Blue Envirobank bins located around the school. In the first two days students raised nearly $100 from their efforts and collected over 14 large Enviro-bags full of containers that could have otherwise ended up in landfill. The initiative has sought to educate students about the consequences of incorrect waste disposal and the impact it is having on our environment subsequently developing their sense of environmental awareness, teamwork and community pride. All money raised by PBC students, staff and the wider community will be used to fund student nominated initiatives and projects (cold water bubblers, air conditioning, solar power, community garden etc.).

In addition to this school based program, students, staff and community members have the opportunity to donate their eligible containers through a ‘Take Home Bag’ option. These bags will provide people with the ability to collect containers at home in an orange Enviro-bag (provided at no cost) over a 2 week period and return the bag, regardless of whether it is full or not, every second Wednesday between 8:00am-9:00am at the Reds Gate on the oval. A new Enviro-bag will be exchanged for a returned one on drop off day. The first ‘Bag Drop Off’ will be Wednesday 14 November.

If every PBC student filled just 1 bag a fortnight, students could raise $300,000 annually to fund projects they care about.

Students have gotten behind the project and are improving their waste disposal habits; a reduction in litter and the quantity of general waste bins collected daily has already been reported by ground staff as a positive consequence of the initiative. All bins around the school have undergone a makeover to feature infographics and educational posters about what items are suitable for each bin - recycling, general waste and container collection. We encourage all students, staff, parents, siblings, relatives, local business owners and community members to get on board with the project to improve our environment and raise funds for worthy causes.

Students willing to participate in the ‘Take Home Bag’ option were distributed orange Enviro-bags in CARE class recently. If any student missed the opportunity and would like collect a bag they can request one from their CARE teacher or contact Mr Pasley or Miss Benigno in V block staffroom. Additionally, if any parent or member of the wider community would like to get involved please contact administration or come down to the ‘Bag Drop Off’ day on Wednesday 14 November between 8:00am and 9:00am to collect your free Enviro-bag.

Information about eligible containers and future ‘Bag Drop Off’ days can be found on the flyer below.

Champion House Assembly

THE VIKINGS HAVE DONE IT AGAIN! House Champions for 2018!! The Vikings lifted the cup at our last full school assembly of the year during which House points for the year were announced. The celebration was great as green confetti rained down over the student body. Phoenicians finished a close second, with Athenians in third and the Spartans in fourth. 2018 has been another cracker year for care and house. Throughout the year, students have competed in events such as the maths challenge, dodge ball, snack attack, dad jokes and dance battle. Students have also come together to support local charities through care class projects and as a school, raised an amazing $10,000 for Livin. Well done to all students on a great year, and congratulations again to the mighty Vikings!!!

Year 10 Economics

Congratulations to Riley Gadsby and Ella Brow from Year 10 Economics who are the winners of this year’s ASX School Sharemarket Game! They have each won a $1000 investment portfolio courtesy of Retire Me Young Wealth Advice Palm Beach.

Thank you to the staff and students who took part in this exciting pilot program. Most students were eager to win the $1000 and showed a keen interest in the sharemarket throughout the challenge. We are very proud of the efforts of all involved. Special mention to Riley who did especially well in the game with a strong result regardless of the sharemarket drop.

Many students have proven to be good long term savers and now show an understanding of the importance of regular saving and investing with the aim of having enough money saved for a house deposit down the track.

To help your son or daughter have their own investment portfolio from as little as $25/week, call Melissa Goodin on 0400 11 4000 at Retire Me Young Wealth Advice Palm Beach, she is more than happy to assist.

Food Technology

Last week our Year 9 food technology classes were immersed in a native Australian food taste testing delight. A local Indigenous friend of the school 'Alfie' came to our classes to introduce us to an array of native bush foods including the Davidson plum and Aniseed Myrtle. Alfie also taught the students how to make a lemon myrtle and wattle seed cheesecake with a macadamia crust, which was delicious. This term the students are learning about the Indigenous Australian culture and how to include bush tucker into their cooking. Their major assignment asks them to use a native Australian ingredient to accompany an ingredient from our garden to create a tasty dish."

GRIP Leadership Conference

On 9 November, the incoming Middle School Head Prefects attended the GRIP Leadership Conference at Griffith University’s Gold Coast campus, together with the 2019 Senior School student leaders. Attendance at this event was just one way in which PBC practically prepares student leaders to contribute their energy and talents to the school community. The students learned that before trying to change the world, a leader should always commit to developing their own character. Break out sessions included how to prepare energetic events and how to create an amazing school culture. The enthusiastic participation of our young leaders was palpable and positive, and the bus trip home was livened by the brainstorming of the group. We look forward to their leadership in the coming year.

PBC Leo’s News

PBC Leo’s donated $600 towards the Tallebudgera State School Leadership Project. Pictured are PBC Leo’s Lucinda and Lily with Leo’s representative Richard and Mr Burgess and Ms Sgalippa from Tallebudgera State School.

LIVIN – PBC’s chosen Charity for 2018

Our House Champion Assembly provided the perfect platform to thank the student body for their efforts in raising an astonishing $10,000 donation to our chosen 2018 charity, Livin. Co-founder and CEO Casey Lyons was present to accept the cheque off our Senior Student Council, who have led the charge all year in providing opportunities for students to have fun and contribute to a very worthy cause – specifically in this instance raising awareness and eliminating the stigma around mental health. Congratulations to our entire community for firstly choosing Livin as our associated charity and pitching in to reach this significant milestone.

NRL RISE Program

Keon Ackerman was selected to take part in, and recently graduated from, the NRL RISE program. NRL RISE was developed by Australian coach Mal Meninga for the Australian Kangaroo rugby league team to provide a shared purpose when wearing the green and gold jersey. Mal challenged the Australian team to share with him and their team mates what inspired them to reach the pinnacle in the game - representing their country. It quickly became apparent that while each of their motivations may have been different, there were some words that transcended the entire group - Respect, Inspiration, Selflessness and Excellence and this became the core of the comprehensive and holistic NRL RISE program.

This was the inaugural program for players outside of the Australian Kangaroos team. Keon committed and worked hard through the entire program. He attended every training session with many of these being straight after playing Wednesday afternoons for the PBC Reds rugby league team. Keon improved his skills while also testing at, or near, the top in in all areas of strength and fitness.

Schoolies 2018: Parents urged to think before they buy

With Schoolies end-of-year celebrations just around the corner, it's timely to remind parents, caregivers and other adults about the laws relating to the supply of alcohol to any person under 18.

In Queensland, there are laws that mean it is illegal to irresponsibly supply alcohol to anyone under 18 years at a private place, and fines of up to $10,444 may apply.

'Irresponsible supply' is defined in the Liquor Act 1992 and takes into consideration issues such as whether the consumption is supervised by the responsible adult for the child, the age of the child, and whether the adult supplying the alcohol is intoxicated.

The Queensland Government has developed the Most expensive drink campaign to increase awareness of the irresponsible supply laws and the fines that may apply, and encourage discussions between parents and their children. You may have already seen these campaign posters in local hotels, clubs, and bottle shops.

Further information about irresponsible supply laws is available via the link below.

‘Beauty and the Reef’

Lin Sutherland’s latest documentary feature film ‘Beauty and the Reef’ hit the big screen in conjunction with Event cinemas on 9 October. The premier attracted Queensland’s

Environmental Minister and other key MP’s as well as leaders in environmental law and tourism facilities. It is set to shake this world up in caring for our coral reefs.

The select audience were moved by her unfolding eye witness account of the environmental

changes affecting the Great Barrier Reef and her quest of visiting and interviewing leading experts to understand why. The film is now on a South Qld tour with a film screening and a panel of experts to interact with communities to effect change and help bring back the Great Barrier Reef.

Community Meeting

You're invited!

Drugs, alcohol and our children

Guest speaker – Dom Shelley, Founder of Get RAAD will speak to the audience, regarding keeping our young people safe from drugs and alcohol:

Dom’s advice is based on real-life experience – after 15 years of previously living with drug dependence, then beating it, he has spent 10 years working as a professional in the Alcohol and Drug sector!

"As a norm, young people aren’t talking with parents, family, teachers, coaches etc and are only having conversations with their peers about alcohol and drug use, so it’s crucial we educate all young people with accurate, real information so they are better informed.”

Dom has worked with Queensland Indigenous Community members, been a youth worker, homeless outreach worker and State Manager for a national alcohol and drug service and has studied Psychological Science as well as Criminology and Criminal Justice, with diplomas in Alcohol and Drug Related Work and Mental Health.

So get ready for some real advice when it comes to drugs, alcohol and our children!
