Principal’s Report
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
John Cattoni, Principal from Currumbin SS commences today as the Acting Executive Principal at PBC for the remainder of the term whilst I explore London and Ireland on Long Service Leave. With the future Library capital works meetings occurring during the September School Holidays and requiring my attendance, I am taking the opportunity to go overseas now.
All too often we hear stories about “this generation” of children and what they are like compared to years ago. With this term’s Care focus being on community and giving back, it was great to hear from a community member the events as described below.
“As I was driving home from work I witnessed a minor accident involving an elderly lady on a motorised scooter and a pedestrian. The scooter ended up on top of the pedestrian’s leg, as she was laying on the road in the middle of the busy intersection. A group of PBC students then ran over and lifted the scooter off her leg. A second group of PBC students ran over and picked up the lady’s shopping trolley which had tipped over and they then put all her groceries back in it. Seeing this happen brought a tear to my eye!”
This week will see our Year 12 students sit the Core Skills Test closely followed by their exam block. The students have worked hard through the year to reach this point and all that is left now is to ensure they eat, drink and sleep well. Good luck to all our Year 12s.
Congratulations to the Open Rugby League Team who play in the State Final next week. The team are already winners both on and off the field as embody the Reds Optima Code, “Nothing but the Best” in not only their football but also their school work, behaviour and as role models.
Regards
Chris Capra

Senior School Update
This term has seen a flurry of charitable activities at PBC. Last Friday we had a casual/yellow dress day for Daffodil Day. What a great day Daffodil Day was for PBC. There was a sunshiny feel to the school with students and staff dressed in yellow, a competitive spirit as students competed for House points and a real sense of coming together for the community which aligns well with the school’s gratitude theme for the term. PBC raised almost $1800 for the charity. None of this would have happened without the leadership and determination of Year 10 student Erin Woods. We are very proud of her and she should be congratulated on her achievement. Be sure to read her article on the day in this newsletter.
We were delighted when Currumbin RSL donated a Father’s Day hamper to us to help us to raise money for our nominated charity this year, Livin’. Student council members together with Mandy Porter from Y block sold tickets to raise more money for Livin’. Congratulations to Lynne from student services who was the lucky winner!
The student council are hopeful that they will have raised over $10 000 for Livin’ by the end of the year and are currently planning a Family Feud Night for year 12 students at the end of this term. This night, like the trivia event for students earlier this year will be a great opportunity for Year 12 students to bond, have fun and raise more funds for Livin’.
Great work PBC.
Collaboration with Southern Cross University
We are delighted to announce that last week PBC entered into a collaborative partnership with Southern Cross University with a view to increasing the opportunities of our staff and students in numerous areas, including tertiary exposure, expert lectures, sharing of best practice and professional development.
PBC entered into this relationship as part of the Southern Gold Coast Schools Coalition with a group of nine local primary schools and two secondary schools, using their collective resources in the best interests of all young people on the southern Gold Coast.
End of Term
Students are reminded that they need to be at school every day up to and including Friday 21 September. This is particularly important for Year 12 students as they will only have 4 teaching weeks before assessment commences in Term 4.
Diploma of Business
The school intends to offer a Year 12 Fast Track Diploma of Business course in 2019. This course which is offered in the school timetable by Prestige Services Training is attractive because it currently achieves a Rank of 81 which is equivalent to an OP of 9. The cost of the course is $1990. Any interested students should contact either Mr. McDougall or Ms McQueen.
Year 11 Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS)
Year 11 OP students and parents please note that QCS classes will commence at 8:00am on Wednesdays in term 4. As 11OP students will be commencing school at 8:00am on Wednesdays they will be allowed to leave school during sport time in Term 4. All non OP students in Year 11 will have to continue to do sport in Term 4. Any student that has transport or other issues which will affect their attendance at 8:00am should contact Mr McDougall in Y block.
Middle School Update
You may have seen the media coverage of the release of NAPLAN results. We are expecting the arrival of student’s individual reports in early September and we will send these home once they arrive. PBC students performed well as a group with both Year 7 and Year 9 cohorts doing very well across all domains and performing well when compared to other schools. There is certainly a lot of ways NAPLAN data can be interpreted, with the most important being how we can continue to work with individual students.
Overall, I think there are three important points we can take-away. The first is that our teachers are working hard to help our students build on the good work done in primary schools. Secondly, there are a number of common skills that we seek to develop from Year 7 to 12. Thirdly, it is important that students approach these types of challenges with the right mindset. Here we talk about our students developing a growth mindset and this really sets them up for success.
We can use this information to inform our work with students and to plan for the future. It also allows us to work with class groups on specific skills that need strengthening. Regardless of the media attention NAPLAN receives, we know that core skills, like reading comprehension, need to be developed to sophisticated levels for our students to successfully engage in the range of subjects they study across all year levels.
We have some very good stories to tell about individual students who have exceeded all expectations and shown that, with the right support, every student can grow and develop.
In all, our results tell us that the focused work we have done in reading, spelling, numeracy and support for lower performing students is paying off. Given that these are cross-curricular strategies, we are looking for students in all year levels to benefit.
It is a rich set of information for us, especially when combined with the other information we are using to help students improve. At the same time, I want to congratulate our students and staff for their achievements and all of the work they have done.

Middle School Programs
We are very proud to be running a number of pro-active programs in the Middle School this year.
Rock and Water is a program that assists students in their development to adulthood by increasing their self-realisation, self-confidence, self-respect, boundary awareness, self-awareness and intuition. We have a number of groups running throughout each term with a new group running in the Inclusive Practices area and another group during Sport on a Wednesday. We have also had a number of staff trained this term with a view to increasing the number of groups running.
One of our newest programs is the PTT (Potential through Tenacity) program running over Terms 3 and 4. The program is being facilitated by one of our highly accomplished parents Shiike Vanderwerff. Shiike is a coach and speaker with a myriad of experiences that he is using to guide some of our Middle School students and parents through skills to better tap into their potential.
Our RESTORE program is another avenue where we are assisting students to understand the implications of their actions how other people are affected. Students spend time using Positive Education theories and applications to support using their strengths to set goals and work towards behavioural change.
Middle School Student Leadership Selection
There is a buzz amongst Year 7 and 8 Middle School students at present as they consider nominating for House leadership positions in 2018.
The positions available are:
Year 9 2019 only
- Middle School Head Prefect
Year 8 and 9 2019
- Middle School House Sports Captain
- Middle School House Cultural Captain
- Middle School House International Captain
Now is the time for students to be speaking with current Prefects, Captains and teachers who are House Leaders about the roles, and completing nomination forms (which are available from Middle School Student Reception and from House Leaders).
We wish all of our students well on their leadership journeys.
Nominations are due by Friday 7 September 2018.
Meeting Commitments
The ‘busy end’ of the Term is upon us. It is a good time to check in with your student to see how they are feeling about their achievements so far this term and how they will meet the challenges that remain. While it will include subject assessment, demands might also include sporting finals, musical or drama performances and club activities, not to mention family and social events.
You can support your child by helping them map out their final few weeks – their commitments, deadlines and plans for revision and study. You can access your child’s assessment calendar at the link below. Breaking large tasks – such as preparing to write a History essay under exam conditions – into smaller tasks – maybe half an hour of practising writing out essay plans – can reveal how achievable the job ahead actually is. This in turn can reduce stress for students – and their parents.

Plan to Finish Well
Each day, students at PBC are challenged to ‘give nothing but the best’. To achieve their best, students need to be fully committed to their attendance and learning. In Middle School, teachers will be teaching course work right up to the end of term. When assessment is completed, teachers introduce foundation concepts for the coming term. For these reasons, please plan for your child to attend school through to Friday 21 September.
Please note that to maintain the integrity of tests, the PBC Assessment Policy states that exams are not to be sat early. If a student is forced by their commitments to miss a test, they will sit it as soon as possible afterwards.
After the holidays, school recommences on Monday 8 October 2018.
Science News
Term 3 has been a busy time for our scientists! Year 7 students have been investigating the Earth, Sun and Moon systems and how these systems interact to influence us here on the Earth. Students have explored Tides, Moon Phases, Eclipses and Solar Phenomena. This term students’ knowledge will be assessed in an examination in Week 9. Be sure to remind your budding scientist to start revision in Week 8!
Year 8 students have been studying Energy. At the moment students are completing an investigation on the elastic energy of balls by changing either ball type, drop height, surface type (to name a few) and analysing the effects on the balls rebound height. Ask your child how many energy transfer and transformations occur from the balls release to the height of its rebound. Students are compiling their findings in a scientific report (this terms assessment) and should be working on this at home.
Year 9 science students have been busy exploring Exothermic and Endothermic chemical reactions in the ‘Everyday Chemistry’ unit (chemical reactions often involve a change in energy due to breaking and forming of bonds - reactions that release energy as heat are known as exothermic reactions while those that absorb heat are endothermic reactions). For their assessment this term students are required to design and conduct an experimental investigation to analyse how energy in a reaction can be utilised. Students are currently writing a report detailing their findings. Please check that your child is working on this at home.
ASSETS success
Year 10 student, Isabella Lee, has been successful in her application to attend the ASSETS (Aboriginal Summer School for Excellence in Technology and Science) camp next year in Adelaide. In her application, Isabella was required to respond to selection criteria, along with a supporting teacher nomination and response – thanks Miss Lukoszek. The program - focusing on environmental assessment, and food and nutrition - will involve Isabella working with researchers on cutting-edge science and technology projects, exploring pathways to further study and careers, and also connect with Indigenous mentors and community leaders. Current school captain Braith Gausden also attended the ASSETS camp in 2017, and has said that it is one of the best things he has ever done. Hopefully Isabella will have a similar experience and enjoy her time. Congratulations Isabella!

PBC High. Passionate ‘Bout Charity!
Who says fund raising for a charity can’t be fun? It was casual dress day at PBC on Friday 24 August, and a sea of yellow was created within the school ground, with some hilarious costumes just for fun.
For 57 years Cancer Council Australia has encouraged Australians to host fundraising events to support cancer research to benefit; sufferers of cancer, better prevention, and treatment breakthroughs. Our school community had no hesitation supporting Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day this year, and managed to raise $1800.00 towards the events one million dollar national target.
“What a great day Daffodil Day was for PBC. We are very proud of her and she should be congratulated on her achievement” said, Dean of Students, Cathy Clipson about the event.
PBC created a challenge between its houses, the Athenians, Phoenicians, Spartans, and Vikings, to see who could raise the most funds. Competition was fierce but it was the Phoenicians who raised the most money on the day, and well done to them.
Amongst the crowd was one of our own school members bravely fighting lung cancer and secondary bone cancer since June this year. Mrs Deb Reid, our Canteen Coordinator, has undergone radiation and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. With lots of well wishes from the school community Mrs Reid admired the schools involvement in Daffodil Day whilst the school admired her determination to beat cancer.
The school community embraced the challenge and won’t forget the day anytime soon, including the teachers who organised a bbq lunch, dressed in yellow and donated generously.
The schools efforts didn’t stop there - the PBC Leos, a group of students and teachers who loyally support the local Lions Club continued to raise awareness and support the cancer council at the biggest morning tea hosted at the Loins Den in Elanora on Sunday 26 August raising over $1000. With egg salad sandwiches, muffins and tea a plenty, live performances from PBC students, it was a great morning for everyone who attended. Loins Club President Mr Peter Wilson stating; “For a group of young people to put something on like this, and to be so successful is really something. And some of them are not very old, some of them are only year 8’s and 9’ which is something amazing. They’re just great young people. And they’re our future. And we’re pleased to be able to help them and we support them in anything they do”
PBC continues to be proud of it charity efforts which also extends to include Livin’ with mental illness. PBC looks forward to its future engagement in more charities in the years to come.
Erin Woods, Year 10
PBC Leos Club
The PBC Leo’s raised over $1000 for the Cancer Council on Sunday morning at their annual morning tea. The 75 guests enjoyed a lovely morning tea whilst being entertained by talented PBC students. The entertainment included singing, guitar playing and a magician. Thanks to all the teachers, friends and family members that came along to support the PBC Leo’s and the Cancer Council.

The Journey Continues..... 8/8 in 2018
A road trip to Redcliffe Monday afternoon, dinner at the Reddy Leagues and a night at the Oaks Mon Komo were the prelude to the boys Qld Semi against Townsville's Ignatius Park.
Some inspirational words from Timmy Maccan about the "Power of Red" and some quality bonding time set the scene for a special performance.
Big thanks to ex-red Cameron Cullen who spoke to the boys pregame about his passion for the Red jersey and how precious this time in your footy lives is.
The result a comprehensive 38 to 16 victory that takes PBC into our 11th state final.
Fox sports Man of the match was our captain and halfback Thomas Dearden, closely followed by our own Victor Radley clone lock Josh Bevan. Left Center Noah Gafa also stormed back into form with 2 great tries.

PBC Alliance News
Bendigo Bank – Tugun Community Bank Branch
PBC would like to announce a 5 year sponsorship package of our Sports Excellence Program by the Bendigo Bank Tugun Community Bank® Branch.
On Friday 24 August, at the PBC Alliance Business Breakfast we unveiled our new 25-seater bus that features both PBC advertising and Bendigo Bank Tugun Community Bank Branch advertising featuring a selection of PBC's Sports Excellence students.
The bus will be used to transport students to and from their Program activities and is a much-needed asset for the school. All faculties are able to use the bus which means all PBC students are able to benefit from this fantastic asset.
“The PBC Sports Excellence Program is now well established as a positive student pathway in our region, and we are proud to be the first major community partner to take the Program to the next level,” said the Bank’s Co-Chair, Cameron Window.
Mr Window said the sponsorship was the single biggest investment the Tugun Community Bank® has made in its 15 year history and would show how the community banking model can deliver real benefits that make a difference.
“Our community sponsorship funds are generated from the profits of the bank so the more customers who bank with us, the more we have to put back into our local community each year,” he said.
“This new bus is certainly going to improve the way the Sports Excellence is run and we look forward to seeing our community message as a focal point of this partnership.
This is the reason we are here – to support our community from students through to seniors – and be part of the changes that make our local area an even better place to live, work and study.”
Thank you to Bendigo Bank - Tugun Community Bank Branch for this incredible support of our students. This will certainly benefit our students to reach their full potential.

Junior Activities is open to children from the age of five up to 13 years (age for a season is calculated as of midnight September 30) and runs from September through to April the following year with registrations beginning in August.
