Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

The school athletics carnival was held last Friday in fantastic sunny winter conditions. The students looked spectacular in their costumes and house colours. We had record numbers of students participating in the field events and the enthusiasm displayed across the whole day was wonderful to see. Well done to the staff and students for participating in such an engaging school day.

PBC Reds team sports are coming to the conclusion of their regular season and 2018 is shaping up as one our most successful years. The Open Rugby League and U15 boys Football teams have progressed to the state level quarter finals and at the time of writing the boys and girls AFL teams were looking strong to qualify for the State Semi-Finals in October. In addition, the Junior netball girls are off to the Vicki Wilson Cup State Netball Finals. Finally, the School Premier Soccer League competition has seen 2 of our four teams (the junior girls and senior boys) make the semi-finals. The U15 boys soccer team has made it to the final of the Bill Turner Cup. One of the strengths of our sporting program is the level of coaching qualification that all our teachers hold. Under the leadership of Neil Mackay as the Head of Department, we actively encourage our teachers to hold high level coaching certificates and to coach at a regional, state and national level. The teachers achieve certificate level accreditation through the relevant sports association usually in their own time and sometimes at their own expense.

The Term 3 Optima Assemblies conclude next Tuesday with Year 9 awards to be presented. It has been great to see that over 1200 students have been individually recognised for (a) academic improvement (b) academic achievement (c) sports achievement (d) creative arts achievement and (e) community service. Having such a large parent and relative presence at high school awards is great to see and encouraging for the students. Thank you to all that attended.

School Opinion Survey

Information regarding the 2018 School Opinion Survey was emailed home last week. This survey gives you the opportunity to have your say about what our school does well, and how it can improve.

Participation in the survey is anonymous and all information you provide will be treated confidentially. You are able to complete the survey online by following the instructions in the email and using the codes provided on the form to log in. The survey will close on Friday 24 August.

We hope to have as many parents/caregivers as possible complete the survey in order to obtain some truly meaningful feedback. Of course, participation in the survey is purely voluntary, but the information it provides is very important to us, so we hope you will be able to spare some time to complete the survey.

2018 Next Step - Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of Year 10, 11 and 12 students who in 2017 left school without obtaining Year 12 certification. The Early School Leavers survey is a short, confidential survey that collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school.

Between August and September, students who left school early in 2017 can expect to receive an invitation to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office to complete the survey. Please encourage them to take part.

For more information, visit the link below or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.

Senior School Update

Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)

Students and parents are again reminded that it is a student’s grade at exit (end of Year 12) which is used to calculate QCE points. A student will receive 4 points for a subject if they have passed that subject at the end of 4 semesters; however if a student falls from a C to a D at the end of Year 12 in a subject they will receive 0 points for that subject and will be at risk of not achieving the QCE. With this in mind it is important that all Year 12s remain focussed on submitting drafts and revising and studying and completing all assessments to the best of their ability.

Year 12 – QCS

Year 12 QCS students are in the final weeks of preparation for the Queensland Core Skills test on 4 and 5 September. It is vital that all students are present each Wednesday at 8:00am for their timetabled QCS classes and masterclass sessions. All Year 12 QCS students will have compulsory afterschool masterclasses from 1:55 to 3:30pm on Wednesdays in Week 4, 5 and 6 of this term (8, 15 and 22 August). The QCS test will be the most important test which OP students sit this year as the class QCS averages are a critical factor in calculating student OPs. Each student should also be logging onto the Mighty Minds portal which will have individualised results and practice activities to improve for each student.

https://portal.mightyminds.com.au/

Students will shortly receive instructions regarding behaviour and materials allowed inside the QCS test. They will also sign a declaration regarding these instructions and calculators allowed into the QCS. The school will provide students with stationery kits for the QCS test however students will have to supply their own calculator and correcting tape. The school will also provide the students with breakfast on the days of the QCS test.

Year 11 – QCS

The Year 11 QCS Preparation Program will commence in Term 4. Students will have classes at 8:00am on Wednesday mornings and be allowed to leave school during sport time on Wednesdays if they are part of the QCS program.

Student connect

Year 12 students should be logging onto their QCAA learning accounts and checking that their details (e.g. address) is correct: https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au/learning.html ; any issues see Ms Ashby in Y block.

https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/Curriculum/Testingandassessment/Pages/Testingandassessment.aspx

Pathways Centre

It is very pleasing to see the large number of 10 and 11 students who are visiting the Pathways centre and signing up for traineeships. This is a great pathway for students as it provides them with a VET qualification, paid work placement and a pathway to tertiary studies. Year 11 students are reminded that they should commence a traineeship before the end of Term 3 year 11 so as to allow for the number of work placement days to be completed before completing year 12.

Middle School Update

The Middle School at PBC has continued to be a busy place over the past fortnight. I was lucky enough to be present at our Year 8 Optima Assembly, celebrating our many high achieving students across many arena’s including Academic, Sporting, Community Service, Cultural and Behaviour. I am equally looking forward to celebrating the upcoming Optima Assemblies with our Year 7 and 9 students and parents.

The traditional African proverb, “It takes a village to raise a child” has been widely quoted when describing the partnerships required for the positive development of our youth. Our “village” has never been more necessary than it is today. We live in a fast-paced, instant information, and pressure-packed world. Today’s children are faced with a myriad of both challenges and opportunities. The students who receive Optima awards have navigated through those challenges and have embraced the opportunities presented to them.

Our Optima celebrations acknowledge the hard work, dedication and motivation of not just our students but of our teachers and you as families. So, I would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated, hardworking staff here at PBC and you as the families and care-givers of our students. Students, I say to you, well done on your Semester One achievements you have been motivated to succeed, you have been determined in your quest to improve and most importantly you have set goals and worked to attain them.

I wish you all the very best for Semester 2 and remember “Learning is a treasure that will follow its owner everywhere”.

Year 9 into 10 2019 Subject Selections

Year 9 students are preparing to farewell the Middle School and head into the Senior Secondary landscape, this will be a very significant change as they set themselves up for future pathways. Please start discussions with your student about subject options and selections, we have a myriad of choices on offer for Year 10 and students will need some guidance negotiating through this.

This year our Senior School team will be running a Subject Selection Evening on Tuesday 18 September from 6:00pm in the Hall to help with this process. I would encourage you and your students to come along.

Subject Selection for 2019

Over the coming weeks, PBC families will receive 2019 Enrolment Packs for each of their students currently in Years 7 to 11.

For Year 8 students, this is a particularly exciting time as they will be choosing elective subjects for the first time. The Subject Selection form is in the Enrolment Pack, as are instructions on how to complete it.

In Year 9 2019, all students will study English, Mathematics (or Advanced Maths), Science, one semester of HPE and one semester of History. They will also study two electives.

Year 8s have had it explained on assembly that for the sake of the form, no student is to assume they will be selected into CAX or Sport Ex next year. All students, regardless of CAX and Sport Ex, must make a selection of two electives and two reserve electives. CAX and Sport Ex will be prioritised over elective choices as we plan the 2019 timetable.

What Year 8 students need to do:

  • Read the 2019 Subject Selection Guide as soon as it is available on the PBC website.
  • Talk with teachers and CARE class peers about subjects
  • Think about what they enjoy and what they are good at
  • Decide on which two electives they would like to study
  • Pick two ‘reserve’ electives
  • Discuss their choices with parents or caregivers.

The forms need to be returned to PBC by the final day of term. However, subjects are filled on a first in – best dressed basis, so students will have the highest chance of getting into their preferred electives by returning their forms as soon as possible.

Maximising Learning at PBC

We encourage all students to achieve their best, whatever their ‘best’ might be. Students working to improve are urged to apply the following techniques across all their subjects:

  • Set a goal for each subject
  • Use the OPTIMA planner in your diary and know what you are aiming for this term
  • Know what is required
  • Understand what your assessment tasks require and the criteria by which you will be assessed. Focus on these in your work.
  • Manage your time
  • Know your due dates and be sure your family knows them too. Break big tasks into smaller tasks, such as researching an assignment, writing a draft or reviewing the notes of a section of a course. Set yourself regular deadlines.
  • When you need help, seek it out
  • There is so much help available in Middle School, from individual assistance from the teacher, to Tuesday Tutorials, to peer mentoring. Don’t settle at ‘I don’t get it’ – find help until you do!
  • Follow up
Review your notes, write down your questions, do your homework, read around a topic. Such strategies will help improve your factual recall and your understanding.

Assessment Calendar Published

The Term 3 CONNECT FOR SUCCESS Assessment Calendar has now been emailed to all parents and published on the PBC Website. Use the drop down menus to go to Curriculum / Testing and Assessment and open the relevant year level calendar on the right hand side of the screen. In Assemblies, students have been told how to access this information and use it to fill out the Forward Planner in their diaries with their particular assessment dates. Students should make a copy of it to be displayed on the fridge or another public place in the home, so families are aware of their commitments. Please support your Middle School students to develop good habits and be an active part of our learning community.

Selection of 2019 Middle School Student Leaders

From Week 4, we will begin the process of selecting next year’s Middle School Head Prefects. These students, chosen from the current Year 8 cohort, will prepare for their roles by participating in training in Term 4.

Next year, they will represent the Middle School at public events and Parent Evenings and serve as a voice of the Year 7s, 8s and 9s on their House Council and the Middle School Council. They will run fundraising and community building events and constantly seek ways to improve the school for our students.

If your Year 8 child is confident, reliable and enjoys leadership opportunities, please encourage them to stay tuned for information in the daily Student Notices, ‘put their hand up’ when asked and complete an application form. Shortlisted students will be interviewed later in the term and the 2019 Middle School Head Prefects will be presented at the Term 4 OPTIMA Awards.

Positive Behaviours

The Optima team focus this term has been on Attendance, Effort and Behaviour, Achievement and Wellbeing. The Week 1 Year level assemblies gave the Optima team an opportunity to meet with students and deliver our key messages.

  • Attendance - the attendance target is 95% and ‘Every Day Counts’ is a priority for our students, staff and parent/caregivers to optimise student achievement and wellbeing. The impact of 5 days absence per term results in one month non-attendance during the school year. Parent/caregivers will receive non-attendance letters if your child has had 5 or more unexplained absences this year. Any parent completing an Exemption for your child that will be absent more than 10 days, can you please ensure all documents are forwarded to PBC at least 2 weeks prior to the nominated leave date.
  • Minor/Major behaviours - the non-negotiables including ‘Hands off, feet off’, ‘Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be a Learner’ and cyber-safety tips were reiterated to students. Any student should allow parents to view their phone at any time. We advise students to google their name and block any unwanted contacts.
  • Uniform - PBC is well respected within the wider community and our students are representing our school whenever they are in uniform. We would like to congratulate our Middle School students in taking pride in wearing their school uniform, embracing positive behaviours and continuing to make a commitment to uphold the Reds’ tradition to relentlessly strive to be their best self and actively support others to do the same.

Sport Excellence News

Continued improvement and development is a clear focus for the senior AFL program. Exposing players to the next level, and giving them experiences that take them out of their comfort zone, is important for their growth. Each year 24 players are taken to the heartland and experience the culture of Melbourne. Every year is a great learning curve but this year stood out.

On the Tuesday evening the players and coaches were afforded a very rare opportunity to eat dinner and share stories with AFL legend Johnathon Brown. Having someone of his stature take the time and show an interest in our program was a privilege for our group. His message to the boys was very simple and it opened a few eyes. “Keep working hard and you’re not as far away as you think”. Short but very powerful words that hopefully they have taken on board.

The following morning, after a brief stroll around the inner city, we took the short bus ride to North Melbourne Football Club. We were again fortunate enough to get an insight to the life of an AFL footballer. Leigh Tudor (Forward line coach) showed the boys the club’s facilities. A detailed look at what a week at AFL level looks like was then explained to us.

Leigh went through vision with the players as he would with his forwards group and highlighted the key areas that North Melbourne expect from their players. From a coaches point of view it was highly engaging and beneficial to see. From a player’s perspective it shows that the game is not all just about possessions and demonstrated what coaches really value. Again Leigh had wise words for the playing group “Do the little things right, stay involved mentally as well as physically and always chase”.

It was now time to take our training and test ourselves out on a typical Melbourne suburban ground. The middle was a mud pile and the ground was wet. Contested footy was definitely on the menu and it was exactly what we wanted the boys to experience.

Unfortunately the games result didn’t go our way but the learning was immense. After struggling to adapt to the tempo of the game we found ourselves down on the scoreboard. Physically we weren’t overshadowed but didn’t handle the pressure quickly enough. A spirited last quarter saw the boys storm home to kick 4 goals and nearly steal the game. In the end 3 points was all that separated the two teams.

Overall the experience gave the group what it needed to become better players and educate themselves on the demands of being a professional athlete. Their behaviour was exemplary and I am certain that they took a lot of learning away from the trip. Thank you parents for your continued support and a special thank you to our two sponsors Southport Sharks and Fraser Financial Services.

Pedagogical Practices Update

Pedagogical Practices – Feedback Model

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) states that “The research is clear: improving feedback practices can significantly improve student learning and the quality of teaching in classrooms.”

As we explained in the last Parent Newsletter, one of our focus areas this year is to implement a coaching and feedback model that engages all staff. The Feedback Model, launched last term, consists of four options that staff can choose to engage in – Classroom Profiling, Peer Observation, Student Feedback and Professional Learning Teams. As the Pedagogy Coaches in the school, we are facilitating the implementation of the feedback model and will support staff as they engage in the various options. Over the next few Parent Newsletters we will explain each option.

Classroom Profiling

Developed by Mark Davidson, a teacher with Education Queensland for over 20 years, classroom Profiling is a ‘confidential and non-judgemental process that enables a teacher to reflect on the effective learning and teaching strategies they employ to manage the behaviour of the students in their care’. The process involves a trained profiler being invited in to a teacher’s room for about forty minutes. The profiler records data about how they establish and maintain a supportive learning environment on an observation sheet. This information is given to the teacher after the lesson. This allows the teacher to reflect on the data before they participate in a reflection session with the profiler, usually a day later. The process is strictly confidential.

In term one, ten staff from PBC completed a three day training course in Classroom Profiling. From there the trained profilers went in to each others’ classrooms and practiced their profiling skills – getting feedback on their ability use the profiling sheet to give feedback. Feedback about feedback! The staff who selected to engage in Classroom Profiling are now booking in to have a profiler visit their class. The feedback so far has been very positive. Below are some staff testimonials:

I was fortunate to be profiled in the later part of Term 2. Though daunting at first, the experience was incredibly valuable. My profiler gave me clear and practical feedback and helped me develop a set of specific strategies to improve teaching and learning in my classroom. I have already begun implementing these strategies and I am excited to engage with profiling further as part of my ongoing professional development.

I found profiling extremely useful in allowing me to enhance student engagement and improve learning outcomes through professionally reflecting on my pedagogical practice with my profiler.

I really appreciated having the opportunity to have a profiler come into my classroom and watch me teach. As an early career teacher, there is still a lot to learn; hence, I tend to put a lot of focus on the areas that I need to improve on in my practice. After my profiling session, whilst there are a few areas that I need to work on, my profiler emphasised that there are a lot of positive aspects about my practice as well. I think that beginning teachers tend to focus on their mistakes, at times too much emphasis is given, but this feedback session opened my eyes to the positive aspects as well, and how I can continue to build on my strengths as a teacher. I think that having your positives acknowledged and seen is just as powerful as having someone help you with building upon the areas that need more development. I would recommend a profiling session for all teachers, as it does open your eyes to what is actually going on in your classroom, both positive and what could be developed.

Australian Schoolboys Rugby League

Congratulations to PBC Rugby League Sports Excellence students Thomas Dearden and Juwan Compain on their selection in the prestigious Australian Schoolboys 16-18 Years Rugby League team. Along with fellow PBC student William Evans, both boys were outstanding when playing for Queensland in the 6 day carnival. Both boys achieved Man of the Match honours in games throughout the week and Tom was recognised as Queensland’s Most Valuable Player of the Championship.

In what will be a tremendous experience both Tom and Juwan will tour England for 4 weeks later in the year with the Australian team. With the first scheduled game on 25 November, warm-up games will be played against provincial teams leading into a 2 test series against the English Academy Test Team. Best of luck to both boys for the remainder of the REDS season leading into the GIO cup rounds and then onto what will hopefully be a successful tour for the Australian team.

Legal Studies – Mooting Competition

Two teams of four Year 11 Legal Studies students recently competed in the Beenleigh Courts Mooting (mock trial) Competition. The competition gave students an opportunity to play the role of an advocate in in a simulated courtroom setting. In preparation, students were required to analyse a provided fictional scenario from the perspective of either the Prosecution or Defendant. In addition to presenting a general summation of arguments on the day, students had to master the art of questioning by cross-examining a witness. Both teams’ commitment and prior preparation resulted in a stellar performance on the day and we eagerly await the competition results.

PBC Students Giving Back…

We received some lovely feedback recently from Nicky Cooper who runs the Instrumental Music Program at Kingscliff Public School. A group of PBC music students recently volunteered on their own, to spend a beautiful Sunday helping out as mentors at a band workshop for Kingscliff Primary School's Senior Band. The PBC Students that volunteered consisted of Nicky's daughter Amy, a collection of ex-Kingscliff Primary (now PBC) students and some other PBC students just keen to go along and help.

It was lovely to hear that our students were a fantastic help on the day and the primary school kids loved having them there, gaining so much from the experience of working with them.

Well done for giving back and spending a beautiful Sunday helping others:

South Queensland Touch Champions

PBC entered an U13, U15 and Open Girls team in the recent South Queensland Border Districts (SQBD) tournament on Saturday 28 July.

In what was a gruelling day all 3 teams played seven 25 minute games. The 13’s and 15’s teams played some sensational touch and went through the prelims undefeated to make the Grand Final. Unfortunately both teams went down to very strong Helensvale squads in the decider.

The Open girls were beaten early in the day by last years’ QLD All-schools champions Benowa but reversed the earlier result with a sensational win in the grand final against their arch rivals 5 touchdowns to 4.

All teams are shaping up well to be major forces in the main tournament of the year, Queensland All-Schools from 10-14 October at Whites Hill in Brisbane.

Soccer Success

PBC’s U15 Boys Soccer Team recently won the QLD Quarter Final against Brisbane powerhouse school Cavendish Road. In a tight tussle PBC came from a goal behind at half time to win 2-1. We will now compete in the State Finals Series in Brisbane on August 7/8th for a place at the National Finals.

Netball success

REDS are WINNERS! Congratulations to the Junior Netball Sports Excellence Team that competed in Vicki Wilson Shield (Year 7 to 9) divisions. REDS placed in 1st position in an undefeated tournament where South Queensland high schools played off against other schools in the Vicki Wilson Shield preliminary rounds. The top 20 schools in Vicki Wilson Shield from across the state then enter the Vicki Wilson Cup finals series for the chance to be crowned state champion. The Vicki Wilson Shield Finals will be held from 13-14 October 2018 at Coomera Indoor Sports Centre. Run by Netball Queensland and endorsed by Queensland School Sport, the Vicki Wilson Championship is the premier netball competition for high schools across Queensland.

International Honours Ensemble Program

Congratulations to our amazing Flutist Charlie, Year 11 who recently flew to Sydney to attend a 5 day residential and performance program at the Sydney Opera House with International Honours Ensemble Program.

Charlie was in the concert band, on Principal Flute, a 75 piece band with 13 flutes. Selection was via rigorous audition process with 12,000 auditioning world wide for a total of 225 positions in the concert band, string orchestra and choir. Charlie was one of only 3 Australians selected, 2 in band and 1 in choir. What an incredible achievement!

Basketball U16 State Team

Congratulations to PBC’s Ella Brow (Year 10) was selected for the U16 girls Queensland Basketball State team. The State team played in the Nationals on the Sunshine Coast over the school holidays.

Youth Mental Health Research Study

New research to explore how parent-adolescent relationships influence youth mental health

Do you have a teenager between 11 and 17 years old?
Can you help us understand how family relationships influence teen mental health?

The Parenting and Family Support Centre at The University of Queensland is seeking families throughout Australia to take part in new research exploring the role of supportive parenting in positive youth development for teenagers. We are looking for families of teenagers with anxiety or behaviour problems, as well as teenagers who are doing well.

Who can participate? Parents with teenagers aged between 11 and 17 who are living in Australia. After completing the survey, parents can also invite their teenagers to take part.

What do parents and teenagers do? Parents and teenagers will complete an anonymous online survey (up to 30 minutes to complete) to provide information about how parents raise their teenagers, how teenagers and their parents get along with each other, and parents’ and teenagers’ wellbeing. Parents may participate even if their teenagers choose not to. All participating families can enter a prize draw for a $100 Coles-Myer gift voucher as a token of appreciation for your participation.

How will my participation help? The information that we obtain from families will help us learn more about how teenagers and their parents get along with one another and how this affects teenagers' wellbeing. Teenagers' relationships with their parents are important in helping teenagers become more resilient and better able to cope with strong emotions. This research can help us understand how supportive parenting can help teenagers be happy, healthy and reach their full potential.

For more information and to complete the survey, please go to our project website below. You can also contact our research team at parentingteens@uq.edu.au for more information.
