Principal’s Report

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

With the recent retirement and promotion of some key primary school principals in our area, Anita Sgalippa has been appointed Acting Principal of Tallebudgera SS for the remainder of 2018. Anita has been the Principal – Middle School at PBC for the past three years. Whilst Anita will not be at PBC physically, we look forward to continuing to work with Anita as a key cluster school member. Alison Fahlbusch will be taking Anita’s position for the remainder of this term. Alison is substantively a Deputy Principal at Miami SHS where she has also been the Acting Principal, in addition to these positions Alison has held a leadership position at Elanora SHS.

It was a big week for PBC students last week (which week isn’t). The Creative Arts faculty had a massive Friday with a 1st place in Lyrical Routine, 3rd place in Jazz Extension, 3rd place in Contemporary Extension and 4th place in Jazz against 38 other schools at the Brisbane Eisteddfod, St Laurence’s College. The Open Rugby League Team and Year 10 team both had amazing victories over arch rivals Keebra Park SHS. Watching over 300 PBC students launch onto the field at the final siren of the Open’s win demonstrated the school spirit at its absolute best. The Gold Coast Bulletin ran stories about the PBC v KPSHS Rugby League rivalry for three consecutive days last week including a whole double page spread. NAPLAN is finished for another year and the year 7s that I supervised did their best and treated the tests seriously, although they were looking forward to getting back to class as normal.

Also in the Gold Coast Bulletin last week were two days of stories about mobile phones and their use of school grounds. PBC has the policy that our students may use their phones during the two break times however they are not be used or switched on whilst in class. The exception to this rule is when the students are using their phones at the direct instruction of the teacher to enhance their learning. Students who are caught using their phone in class, will have their phone confiscated for the remainder of the day and a detention issued.

Middle School Update

We welcome our new acting MS Principal Alison Fahlbusch who is replacing Anita Sgalippa until the end of term 2.

NAPLAN

THANK YOU NAPLAN PARENTS!

Thank you to every parent who supported their student through the NAPLAN testing last week, and who actively stayed in touch with the school about absences. We had a large number of students attend the catch up tests on Friday, which means that families will now get a fuller snapshot of the students’ progress in their essential literacy and numeracy.

Our Year 7 and 9 students are to be congratulated for their amazing efforts over the three days of NAPLAN. They were calm, settled, prepared and almost every student visibly gave their best effort. They should be proud of their work.

The QCAA will release NAPLAN reports about mid-August, at which time they will be mailed home to families. Each year, PBC uses the data as part of its ongoing efforts to improve teaching and learning for every student. We look forward to sharing our school results in Semester 2.

Optima Assemblies

We recently held our tri-annual OPTIMA Awards Assemblies – celebrating outstanding achievement within our Middle School, across the pillars of dedication to behaviour, academia, the Arts, sports and service to the community. We had outstanding results across our Middle cohorts and taking the opportunity to formally recognise these achievements is a regular highlight on the school calendar. Thank you to all parents who took the time to attend and support your students, and thank you to our award recipients for your dedication to your craft.

Attendance

‘Every day counts’ is an Education Queensland initiative that aims to assist in improving student attendance at school through a shared commitment by students, parents, caregivers, schools and the community.

The 2018 PBC attendance target is 95%. Parents/caregivers will be notified of an unexplained absence for their child each day. Your child’s attendance is monitored in every lesson by the Year Coordinator. In addition, a parent/caregiver will be contacted if your child has repeated unexplained absences by the:

  • Year Coordinator – 5 days
  • Dean of Students – 10 days
  • Deputy Principal – 15 days or more

Parents/caregivers may be prosecuted if they do not fulfil their legal obligations in regard to enrolment and attendance of their child at school, or participation in an eligible option. For further information go to the link below.

http://education.qld.gov.au/everydaycounts/docs/get-teenager-to-school.pdf

Exemption

If a student is absent for more than 10 school days an exemption must be completed by parent/caregiver. (If travelling overseas copies of dates and travel destinations must be included with the exemption submission). If your family requires an Exemption for 2018 please complete the paperwork and return to the Middle School Student Services office ASAP.

Assessment and Holidays

Please note that core assessment this term spans across Weeks 7 to 11. When the assessment occurs well before the holidays, teachers will be commencing the next unit of work, and students will be involved in significant work up to the last day of term. For this reason, we request that parents arrange for students’ holidays to be taken during the official holiday period only.

For further information, see the Assessment Policy here:

House and CARE Update

What a wonderful time it is at PBC, with the chance to represent your House in a plethora of events around the school. Last week saw our very first AFL based competition, with students competing in the Handballing challenge. The Gold Coast Suns kindly loaned their targets, often used during the Suns home games entertainment. It was great to see members of our own Australian Rules sports excellence program, both boys and girls, as well as students who had never handballed a footy before taking part. Whilst emphasis in House events is always on participation, it was excellent to see great skill on show. Special mention to the winner of our senior competition, Isaac Perrett, a Phoenician who skilfully hit the target 14 times in a row. In the Middle School, it was another Phoenician, Benjamin Rafferty who won the event with 8 handballs in a row. Congratulations also to the Athenians who had the highest participation in both the Middle and Senior school comps.

The Inter-House Maths Competition was a calculated success in 2017 and returned bigger and even better in weeks 3 and 4. During the initial rounds, students battled the clock in an attempt to complete a series of both simple and complex mental arithmetic problems, aiming for both speed and accuracy. Participation was tremendous, particularly in the Middle School. The final was held in the theatre, with students from every House and every year level represented. With just 5 seconds allowed for each question, students had to answer complex problems individually in front of a vocal crowd. School Captain Braith Gausden (Spartans) was definitely a crowd favourite, however he was eliminated by an incorrect answer, with only a few competitors remaining. In the end it came down to a two way battle between Austen Younger (Athenians-Year 9) and Lisa Goldspink (Vikings-Year 7). Austen had the benefit of experience (having placed second in last year’s competition) and buzzed in quickly with the correct answer on the final question to take home the win. Awesome effort Austen! Congratulations to Lisa, who as a Year 7, battled the best in the school with confidence and composure.

On sale now at the uniform shop are House buffs! These can be worn at any Inter-House competition, including major events such as Athletics Day (coming up in Week 3, Term 3) and are a great way to identify with and support your House. Buffs are available for each House, from the uniform shop before school and are just $7 each.

Care classes have been tackling the very serious and often confronting issue of bullying. Students have been provided the opportunity to combine and work with their ‘sister’ class, enabling students from Years 7 all the way to 12 to unite and be heard. Students are currently developing their own campaigns promoting PBC’s strong anti-bullying stance. These campaigns will culminate in presentations in class in Week 11. As a discussion starter, our own student leaders wrote, filmed and edited a video, which all students have now seen. It is a great piece and we recommend you take a look if you haven’t already. It is available for viewing on the PBC Facebook page. Please take this opportunity to continue to keep communication lines open with your own young people at home.

PBC’s Got Talent House Finals are being held in this week. PBC’s Got Talent has been running for many years and is a real highlight on the school calendar. The best act from each House Final will progress to the Grand Final in Week 7. The Grand Final will also feature a special exert from the school musical ‘Grease’. Gold coin donations will be collected at the door of the PBC’s Got Talent Grand Final with all money raised going to PBC’s elected charity for 2018, Livin.

Good luck to all students.

Academic Excellence News

On Saturday, PBC went to the University of Queensland to compete in the 2018 Philosothon. Over 200 hundred students discussed, and tried to come to some agreement on the following:

  • We have forgotten the purpose of education
  • Free will is not important
  • Our society is not progressing
  • Some cultures are better than others

PBC came a very respectable third, and as there was so little separating 2nd and 3rd, have qualified for the third year running to compete at the Australasian Philosothon. PBC students are flying to Adelaide to compete in this year’s competition later in the year.

Sport Excellence – Rugby League News

Long live the Rivalry….. without a champion opponent, greatness cannot be achieved.

Wednesday night the Open Reds defeated the defending Australian Schoolboy Champions Keebra Park in a pulsating Rd 3 of the Broncos Challenge at Pizzey Park. The final scoreline of 26 to 22, didn’t tell the whole story as Keebra threatened to score in the final play of the game, only for fullback Glenn McGrady to bat the ball dead and save the day. The hundreds of student spectators, teachers and Reds Alumni including Kevin Proctor, Keegan Hipgrave, Will Mathews and the original Red Champion Craig Weston were treated to an epic encounter.

An early lead of 18 to 4, from tries to captain and halfback Thomas Dearden, Man of the Match backrower Juwan Compain and centre Kyah Watts was eroded in the 10 minutes after halftime when Keebra ignited to take the lead 22 to 18.

Desperate defence and an unbelievable 1 on 1 steal by Glenn McGrady on a runaway Keebra centre swung momentum once again, with Ediq Ambrosyev scoring in the corner shortly after to draw scores level.

Five-eighth Toby Sexton then stepped up and calmly slotted the conversion from the sideline to once again take the lead. Another penalty goal to Toby just before fulltime would see an end to the scoring. Keebra has always been renowned for their physical forward packs and this game was no different, so praise also has to go to the Reds middles (Props Adyn Anguna and Jovahn Tearoiti, hooker Jed Edwards, and lock Solomon Torrens) for their outstanding performances.

A round win is great, but now the key is to continue to improve before we once again meet in the Knockout Stages of the Schoolboys Cup. As the boys say, it’s time to “RedUP!”

School Nurse News

Recent news stories in the media have prompted discussions around consent and what consent actually looks like around sexual activity.

When our bodies are subject to stress we fall into modes FIGHT, FLIGHT or FREEZE.

In the past we have utilised the “NO MEANS NO” motto, meaning if we do not want to engage in sexual activity you verbally have to say NO. This has been replaced with YES MEANS YES.

The reasons for this change include persons drunk, drugged, sleeping, unconscious or in a FREEZE state may not have the opportunity, confidence or means of saying NO.

We have now seen the ‘ENTHUSIASTIC YES’ which you may have seen in the news recently.

I strongly urge parents to talk to your teens about consent and what this looks like. Our teenagers are being bombarded with sexual messages daily from TV, music, advertising, online websites and their friends. Sex is often joked about and discussed in a derogatory or stereotyped way. Informing our teens on what acceptable behaviour is and what is not is important and where to get help to avoid unwanted pregnancy, STI’s or sexual assault.

The age of consent remains at 16 years of age.

Recent studies have indicated that when parents and schools talk to their teenagers about sexual health teenagers are LESS likely to engage in risky sexual behaviours and are less likely to fall pregnant or contract an STI (Family Planning QLD)

PBC LEO’S

Macpherson Community Service Award

The Leo club of PBC with 35 members has been acknowledged for their commitment to community service. Well done to the many Leo members who received community service awards at the Optima assemblies. You should be very proud of your ongoing commitments to community service both within the Leo club and within your own community. A special recognition should go to Sotari Turley, Leo President, who received a Macpherson Community Service award for her contribution to community services. A very deserving award and as Leo president, Sotari has led by example and has been a worthy role model for others in the Leo club.

The IGA barbeques are an ongoing fund raiser for the Palm Beach Lions and Leo clubs and our members work with members of the Lions club to raise much needed funds for the community.

The Leo club members are organised a concert for the residents of the Galleon Garden’s retirement village on Sunday 20 May, and provided the entertainment as well as helped serve the residents morning tea. We have some very talented Leo members both past and present, who offered to perform. Also, other members of the school music and drama departments also offered to display their talent and entertain the residents.

Finally, in June, members of the Leo club have volunteered to work on a stall at the Tugun Fruit Market to promote the use of and help sell reusable bags.

Thanks to members of the Palm Beach Lions and Lioness clubs for their continued support for the Leo club and I would like to welcome to the club Mrs Apanui and Mrs Withington.

The Burleigh, Palm Beach and Elanora (Police) Community Consultative Committee was established to develop a partnership, between the Police and the community and meets every three months in an open forum:-

  • To update the public on law and order matters in the community
  • To give everyone the opportunity to meet the senior Police at the Palm Beach and Elanora Police stations – whose responsibility is also Burleigh.
  • To discuss any issues regarding community safety

Everyone likes to feel safe in their community, so come and share information and air any concerns, fears or grievances you may have, so the Police are able to act accordingly! And develop a close relationship with your local police and initiate ongoing cooperative communication.

Sincerely,
Ian Grace, Chairman
Palm Beach, Elanora & Burleigh Police Community Consultative Committee
