Principal’s Report

This year we have embarked on adding layers to another vital ingredient to allow our students to flourish, that being our Care and House Systems.

Dear Parents,

At PBC we are well aware that there are a number of vital ingredients to ensure every student achieves their potential and flourishes in their area/s of passion. Of course, one of the most vital ingredients is the continued dedication that our excellent staff demonstrate in nurturing the talents of our students.

This year we have embarked on adding layers to another vital ingredient to allow our students to flourish, that being our Care and House Systems. These systems have been built around the principles of positive education with the following guiding principles:

  • Adopting a practical, evidence based approach to teaching our young people to be their best self
  • Having a clear framework that allows us to work with parents as partners
  • Strengthening the relational fabric of our school by ensuring students have more than one friendship group
  • Providing students with greater leadership opportunities in the decision making of the school and to hear their ‘voice’
  • Leveraging positive peer relationships to drive high standards of behaviour form the ground up

For a school our size to take on such a major overhaul of our systems and structures and complete the first semester of the implementation in such a positive manner should be celebrated. A special mention to our House Leaders, Care Coordinators and Care teachers for their support and dedication to this initiative.

Semester 1 Reports

Semester 1 reports will be emailed home on Friday 23 June. It is very important that parents discuss academic, effort and behaviour results with their child to support them in understanding:

  • the overall merit of the results and whether they match their capability
  • which grades improved or declined since last report and why?
  • are there any teachers that need to be contacted to discuss issues?
  • are any subject changes required?
  • what modifications to study habits need to be made to promote further success?

Through this discussion it is critical that successes are acknowledged and goals are developed for the next semester. For senior school students, it is also particularly valuable to reflect on how these results contribute to their SET plan and their preferred post school pathways.

I understand that these conversations are challenging and require careful planning, however I can attest that in my professional experience, the rewards are great and often result in a more focussed, motivated young person with better post schooling outcomes.

Senior School Update

Year 12 Updates: QCS & Sports Arrangements

The Senior School team has been working tirelessly with the Year 12 cohort on their upcoming QCS test. Preparations for the test have included specialised QCS classes once a week, a QCS boost club that runs fortnightly, QCS Turbo days along with a myriad of resources available on the school drive for students to access. I do encourage all our OP students and any others intending to sit the QCS test to put aside study time each week to work through past exams and practice questions.

Year 12 Sport Semester 2

As of Term 3, all students will have completed their interschool sport commitments, resulting in changes to their Term 3 timetables. In Year 12, extra programs of support are launched during the Period 4 (1:55pm – 3:05pm) Wednesday afternoon timeslot to help improve the learning outcomes of all our senior students. The introduction of these programs will impact all Year 12 students, who will be enrolled in one of the following, dependent on their pathway and required level of support:

  • QCS Students attend QCS Masterclasses
  • Non-QCS Students who have failed 1 or more subjects in academic, effort or behaviour area/s in Semester 1 will be enrolled in Wednesday Period 4 timetabled tutoring support classes
  • Non-QCS Students who have passed all subjects will be allowed to depart school at 1:55pm to undertake private study.

Year 11 Updates: Camp Review

We would like to thank you again for allowing your student to participate in the Year 11 camp experience. We have certainly had some positive feedback from all involved. We have created some online surveys for the students, parents and teachers in an attempt to gain important feedback on the camp experience. This feedback will allow us to reflect on the positive and negative components of this year’s camp and work towards ensuring next years is even better. The students and parents of those that attended camp have been sent an email that contains the link to the online surveys. We would appreciate if you could spend a couple of minutes completing them. We believe the students’ gain significant benefits in not just their own personal development, but also those that focus on teamwork and their ability to develop the necessary social skills to be a more rounded person within the PBC community and beyond.

Year 10 Updates: Student Pathways and Shutdown Experience

Year 10 have just completed their first semester of experiencing an official exam shutdown period. I would like to encourage all parents to start a reflective conversation with your students about how they performed in their first semester of Senior School. This might bring up a range of topics including attendance, exam prep, study habits and general organisational skills. Most importantly however is their overall wellbeing and how they are feeling as a student. These conversations will be further enhanced when you receive the Semester One Reports and make a plan to improve and set goals for the second half of the year. We have a range of support services that can be utilised should you see an area that needs attention. Open and effective communication between the students, parents and school goes a long way to making school a more successful and positive experience.

Year 10 students and their parents need to be aware of the following requirements for students to study in the OP pathway in 11 and 12.

To study 5 OP subjects and be eligible for an OP students must achieve;

  • An A or B in English and Maths in Semester 1 year 10
  • Students wishing to study a science in Year 11/12 (Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Marine Science or Science 21) must also achieve a B in Science in Semester 1 year 10
  • Students wishing to study Maths B or C in Year 11 must achieve at least a B10 in Maths in Semester 1 year 10

Students who achieve a C5 in Maths and English in Semester 1 Year 10 may still be able to study Maths A and English in Year 11 however will not be able to study 5 OP Subjects in Semester 1 year 10.

More information regarding subject selection for Year 11 will be published in Term 3.

General Senior Schooling Notices:

  • Parents and students are reminded that all classes will be actively commencing new work during week 10 and students are expected to attend school up to and including 23 June.
  • Reports should be finalised by the end of week 10 and the senior schooling team will start the performance monitoring process. Students need to be passing at least 5 of their 6 classes to achieve the QCE. Any parents of “at risk” students will be contacted by the Senior Schooling team.
  • OP predictions for Year 11 and 12 students should be finalised by the end of week 1 next term. Year 12 students will then have an OP prediction interview and parents of 11 and 12 OP students will be sent an OP prediction email. A reminder that every rung and level achievement and the QCS performance of the cohort are utilised in OP calculations. Students that are just passing (Cs) are unlikely to get an OP below 15 to secure a tertiary place.
  • Any Year 11 student requesting a subject change will have to attend a meeting in Y block at 11:30am, Tuesday 20 June. Only limited changes will be available.
  • Any Year 11 student interested in completing certificates in horticulture, construction, automotive and electro technology on Fridays with the Gold Coast Trades College should contact Ms McQueen in F block. Courses commence July 14.

Middle School Update

The term is travelling so quickly I am sure parents can't believe it is holiday time again. The students have been working so hard and will be ready for a break come 3:05pm on 23 Friday. New work will be happening right through to Friday so I ask that holidays not be extended and that school term dates be respected in line with our 'everyday counts' culture. School resumes on Monday 10 July for Semester 2.

This week has seen students completing their CARE curriculum on Growth Mindset for term 2. I would encourage you to have a conversation with your middle schooler about what they have learnt about themselves. There are numerous resources on Growth Mindset on the internet if you are interested to explore more about this concept and how it can help your young person to be the best version of themselves.

Deputy Principal Report

Congratulations to our students on their daily commitment to proudly wearing their uniform and aspiring to reach our 95% attendance target. As we approach the end of Semester 1, student reflection is important. The PBC Reds’ Pledge ‘did I strive to be my best self and actively support others to do the same?’ is a common thread for parent/carers and staff to discuss with your child. Attendance, behaviour and performance are key achievement indicators and at our recent Optima Award Assemblies we challenged the students to aspire to achieve ‘Excellent’ in both Effort and Behaviour for any 6 subjects for their Semester 1 report. We reinforce high expectations for students to optimise their daily learning and wellbeing.

This Semester we have had 87 Middle School students attend the Restore Program led by the Middle School Dean of Students. The Restore curriculum is based on Positive Education which in turn embeds the CARE and House Program. The program allows students to reflect on their behaviour, understand their behaviour and discover new ways to behave. Some student feedback included ‘the program helped me to stay calm’, ‘I loved mindfulness’, ‘I really got to know myself’ and ‘it made me see the good things about myself’. As Restore focuses on restoration and prevention of further misbehaviours, students that are ‘at-risk’ behaviourally will be identified by the Year Coordinators and Deans for group-based intervention during Semester 2.

We wish all parent/carers an enjoyable and safe holiday period with your child.

Meeting Commitments and Enjoying Well Earned Holidays

Students have completed their assessment and have moved on to their next units of work. These will be assessed in the first half of next term so, please ensure that your child attends school up until the final day, so they can meet all of their commitments and be up to date with their learning when they return to school on Monday 10 July.

Athletics Carnival

A change of pace will occur on Friday of Week 10, when we will enjoy the annual Athletics Carnival. This year’s carnival promises to be amazing, and will include not only our high-level track and field events, but also the fun of inter-House Bubble Soccer, a novelty Obstacle Course, Tug-of-War and more. Students are currently nominating for events and all are encouraged to come dressed in house colours. The incredible effort students make to dress for the sports carnival is not matched by many schools, and we look forward to our Year 7s participating in this colourful, energetic event for the first time. Students may wish to bring money to purchase from the Student Council sausage sizzle, which is fundraising for charity. The tuckshop will also be open.

Semester 1 Reports

Your child’s school report will be emailed home on Friday 23 June. Please check that we have your email address recorded. Please contact A Block Administration should you have concerns, on 5525 9333.

This Semester Report is a detailed, written report, showing what your student has studied, their results, and strategies for improvement or consolidation. Most students have been working hard to achieve their best, so Reports should provide moments for celebrating successes, as well as setting new goals for Term 3.

Unibound Program

This Thursday 22 June, around 40 Year 9 students will visit Southern Cross University to get a taste of university life. They will experience some lectures, have the opportunity to ask questions and explore the campus. The purpose of the day is to encourage these young people to consider university as an option in the future. We wish them well for the day.

The Skip Off

What a way to bring us into the home stretch for Term 2. The Skip Off was a fun filled event, evident in the smiles on student’s faces, the constant encouragement of peers and the number of enthusiastic participants.

The middle school basketball courts were filled with life. The energy was infectious, as the students skipped to take the title for the most double unders or a chance at representing their house in the ‘Skip Off’ Grand Final.

Congratulations to the 4 finalists; Tahj Hatcher of Spartans, Jordyn Webber of Athenians, Tynan Neveceral of Phoenicians and Sunny Bower of Vikings, who proudly represented their house in the Grand Final, on Friday 9 June. But it was the young gun Jordyn Webber, who never showed signs of tiring, that skipped his way to victory for the Athenian House. Congratulations Jordyn, a win for the Athenians.

Using Praise to Enhance Student Resilience and Learning Outcomes

This week’s article is about how different types of praise can help with your child’s performance including helping students 'bounce back' in the face of difficulties

Teachers are often puzzled about what to do when students don't make an effort to learn, or when they become discouraged by setbacks or material they perceive to be too difficult. One cause of this behavior is the mindset that many students have about their own intelligence.

Research has demonstrated that having the mindset that you are either smart or not smart has serious negative consequences for learning. Fortunately, one powerful way that you can intervene as caregivers, is by being careful about how you give students praise. Offering praise for students' work and efforts can alter this mindset so that students can begin to view their own intelligence as something that can be developed. This mindset of developing intelligence will increase students' ability to "bounce back" in the face of academic setbacks and other difficulties.

Why is praise for effort and/or work strategies useful?

A person's beliefs about why successes and failures occur are very powerful predictors of their behavior in the face of difficulties. Belief that intelligence is unchangeable (fixed mindset) leads to withdrawal of effort when difficulties that challenge a person's view of his or her own intelligence are encountered. Belief that intelligence can be increased through effort — staying with the task and finding the right strategy ("growth mindset") — leads to increased effort and challenge-seeking.

Growth mindsets lead to resilience and higher academic achievement. Fixed mindsets lead to increased probability of academic withdrawal and alienation, and decreased engagement — all of which lead to lower achievement. Praise for intelligence increases fixed-mindset thinking. Praise for effort and strategies decreases it.

Benefits for student performance

Specifically, students who are praised for effort and work strategies rather than praising intelligence will:

  • Apply more, not less, effort when material is difficult for them
  • Seek challenges
  • Set higher goals for themselves
  • Look at failures as opportunities to learn
  • Increase their efforts rather than withdraw effort and attention.

Do's:

  • Notice students' good efforts and strategies and praise them
  • Be specific about the praised behaviors and reinforce this behavior with your feedback
  • Use praise to link the outcomes of an assignment to students' efforts
  • Ask a student to explain his or her work to you

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) on School Students with Disability

The NCCD on School Students with Disability is a joint initiative of all Australian governments, government and non-government education authorities. National data is collected annually to identify the number of students with disability and the level of reasonable adjustment provided for them. The national data collection was progressively implemented in Australian schools from 2013-2015. Since 2015, all schools have participated annually in the national data collection.

Schools are at the centre of the educational experience for Australian students, and every student is entitled to a quality learning experience. Participation in the national data collection process helps schools meet their obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005.

The data being collected at the school level to be reported nationally is the:

  • number of students in the school who are provided with an adjustment to address a disability;
  • level of adjustments provided for those students; and
  • broad category of disability (eg. main disability in either physical, sensory, social or cognitive domains)

Under the DDA (Disability Discrimination Act) the collection of data will include all students diagnosed or evident of a disability, including students that do not meet Education Queensland’s criteria for verification. All students requiring active monitoring by the school or receiving any type or level of adjustment will be recorded. Data collection will commence from 10 July to 4 August and will continue to be collected annually during term 3 of each subsequent year.

Information and fact sheets are available to from the:

Consultation with parents/caregivers is important not only for the data collection but also to ensure you are aware of the adjustments being provided to support your child. While only data that cannot identify your child will be submitted outside of the Department, if for any reason you do not wish for your child to be included in the data collection please advise the school prior to the submission date. The data collection will be finalised and submitted to the Australian Government on Friday 11 August 2017.

Maths News

It has a been a busy Semester in senior Maths with a new Year 10 course in Essential Maths and our 11MathsB students and teachers taking part in an external assessment trial for the upcoming changes to the senior curriculum in Qld. The Essential Maths course supports students who have found Maths more challenging in the past and I am pleased with the results they have been achieving. Ms Tsai and Mr Pow are working hard to make the course successful and accessible. The 11MathsB trial was an interesting challenge for students and teachers alike. It is a change in our assessment to test students on a whole semester of work and was good preparation for the future when most of our current Year 9 students will be tested on a whole year’s worth of work in their Year 12 exams. The trial and feedback from students and staff will enable us to make sure that we are fully prepared for these changes and ensure that students achieve the best possible opportunities and outcomes. Most of the senior maths teaching team also attended a PD recently that gave us further insight into the content of the new courses. We are quite excited about the coming changes. Watch this space for parent support sessions in early 2018.

Our new numeracy coordinator, Mr Conneely has been working hard to support students improving their numeracy problem solving skills. He is building on the excellent work of Ms Watson and has created these great problem solving posters to help students to remember the steps to follow for successful problem solving. You could use these as guidelines for your child if they are ‘stuck’ on their Maths homework.

Calculators

Just a reminder that students are expected to bring their own (preferably scientific) calculator to every Maths lesson and exam. Whilst many mobile phones carry an excellent calculator, they are not permitted in exams for obvious reasons. Students who do not get used to using their calculator before an assessment are disadvantaging themselves. We do not loan equipment during exams unless a student’s calculator has actually failed in the exam itself or a student has approached us before to request one in an emergency. Thank you for your support with this.

Fancy a challenge?

This question stumped 90% of Year 12 students in 16 countries – have a go….

A string is wound symmetrically around a circular rod. The string goes exactly four times around the rod. The circumference of the rod is 4cm and its length is 12cm. Find the length of the string.

Or how about trying a CCE bite? We are using these as starter activities for our Year 11 maths students to help prepare them for the QCS test. A big thank you to Ms Purcell who has worked tirelessly on creating these.

CCE bites

1. A triangle has a base length of 6cm and perpendicular height of 4cm. Make a neat sketch of the triangle with dimensions clearly labelled.

2. Estimate the area of the splotch mark on the grid in square centimetres.

3. Without using a calculator, evaluate 82

4. 12% of all students ride their bikes to school. What fraction of students do not ride their bikes to school?

5. Sally says five numbers aloud 5, 6, 8, 11, 15, 20….. what will be the next number she says?

Hospitality News

Seaworld H.O.T.E.L. School 2017

Senior Hospitality students once again attended Seaworld Hotel school to gain valuable insights into the world of work and the hospitality industry. Thirteen students were split into three groups who rotated through a number of different departments including front office, kitchen, concierge, and housekeeping. Bingo and trivia kept us entertained in the evening until lights out. Students were also allowed to go behind the scenes to see how a four-star hotel is run. Guest speakers outlined how the Human Resources department operates and just what employers are looking for in their future staff. Sales and events discussed how to impress prospective clients and just how important this department is to any large company. Over the two days’ students were watched by each department and Monique Little was awarded the STAR performer. Congratulations Monique.

International Department News

PBC had the pleasure of hosting 28 students from Lizen High School in Taiwan. They spent 3 weeks with us and were home stayed by our welcoming families who showed them around our wonderful Gold Coast. The students enjoyed numerous sporting activities, boomerang painting, Zumba, cooking Anzac biscuits and a beach outing. This was the 13th year Lizen has visited our school. The great partnership between our 2 schools is a wonderful experience for all students involved. The PBC buddies had fun looking after the Lizen students and were sad to see them leave. For the Lizen students, friendships were formed and wonderful memories made of their time in Australia.

Australian Schools Mountain Bike Titles

Over three days 2-4 June a team of mountain bikers represented PBC at the Australian Schools Mountain Bike Titles. The riders contested three different events in three days, day one riders competed in a cross-country eliminator consisting of a time trial and head to head knock out races consisting of four riders with only the first two progressing to the next round. The eliminator course was approximately 1:30 min long and conducted in the grounds of Bond University. Day two riders competed in a cross-country event of 16kms at the Nerang State Forrest over a course that included sections of the new Commonwealth Games track. Sunday riders competed over a slightly different course in a 4 hr teams relay enduro event.

All the riders represented PBC at highly commendable level showing great sportsmanship, team spirt and overall enjoyment. Riders were consistently placed in the top half of the field with 3 making finals of the eliminator and our teams placing 8th and 11th in the team’s enduro. Matt Mihelcic was consistently our best performer and placed 15 out of a field of 57 in the individual cross-country. Congratulations to all riders and thank you for the parent support over the three days. We are all looking forwards to the 2018 event.

‘Below Average’ Comic Strip

About the Comic

High school. It's a daunting place, especially when you're at the bottom of the social ladder… where we find four friends trying to survive their final days of senior year. Join Marina, Maddison, Amy and Olivia as they embrace adolescence with a refreshing and humorous approach to daily life in this brand new addition to the Palm Beach Currumbin High School Newsletter.

Below Average is a fortnightly webcomic created by cartoonist Nicholas Cleaver in mid-2010. It follows the day-to-day adventures of four not-so average teenagers: Marina, an inventor suffering with obsessive-compulsive disorder; Maddison, a blissfully ignorant foodaholic; Amy, a sarky game fanatic; and Olivia, the kookiest member of the group.

The strip’s primary theme is humour, and focuses largely on friendship, school and the four girls’ incompatibility with established society.

Maths Answers:

Imagine the rod is a cylinder (like the cardboard tube in a kitchen roll). Cut a straight line from one end to the other and unroll it on a flat surface. This will make a rectangle 12cm by 4cm.
