Principal's Report

Dear Parents

All students have their own individual learning style. Techniques that work for one, will not necessarily work for another. In my experience, aptitude has a role to play in how well a student does in their results but it is not the most important factor.

I like to tell the students that "I Can" is more important than IQ. By this I mean, if a student accepts that it is their responsibility to master their coursework and puts in the time required to do this, they will invariably achieve well.

One of the biggest challenges parents and educators face is teaching our young people that learning is not about a series of tasks that need to be completed. Even students who do not achieve well are often kept busy performing tasks.

Successful students on the other hand persist until they have mastery, they seek to understand, not to merely complete and in so doing are compelled to seek help when they cannot master something on their own.

We are rapidly closing on exam time for all students. Every student would benefit from regular support, to manage their time and commitments and implement a study routine that will enable them to perform to their potential.

I encourage parents to support their child in this process and to work with them to balance their commitments, and in doing so, ensure that social and recreational activities do not detract from this process.

Senior School Update

As you will be aware our 2016 Year 12 cohort are very close to the completion point of their school experience. As successfully graduating from high school is a significant moment in any young person's life, it is with pleasure that we take this opportunity to recognise and acknowledge this achievement. This public acknowledgement and celebration occurs through many of our school events such as the Year 12 Optima Awards; Sports Awards Evening; Creative Arts Awards Evening and Academic Awards Night.

Obviously, our Graduation and Formal Evening play a significant role in this acknowledgement of this cohort's achievements. In just a few short weeks our Year 12 parents will witness their son/daughters' walk across the stage to be congratulated by myself and Mr Loggie, our Executive Principal. They will be awarded their graduation certificate and recognised for their efforts and commitment in attaining their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE). This is always a special evening for the parents and families of our students, as well as for the staff who has worked so diligently with them. Our teachers certainly observe this ceremony with pride as it signals the transition for our students into the world as young men and women.

For our Year 12 cohort as they 'move forward' and on to the next stage of their lives, I hope they remember their days at PBC with fondness. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of their Year Coordinators, Ms Donna Condon and Mr Tim Peach. They have led our Year 12s in a compassionate and understanding way, yet still demanding the highest of expectations. They have also been this cohorts' greatest supporters and have assisted them in becoming the responsible and successful young adults they have become.

In closing, I am looking forward to our 2016 Year 12s following the direction of their dreams with dignity and pride; and as the graduating students of PBC they continue to live by our motto, "Nil Sed Optima".

Middle School Update

This week we celebrated our last OPTIMA assemblies for the year. These ceremonies are a real highlight of our calendar each term. They are a celebration of the achievement of goals but also reward for effort and consistency. It is these characteristics that we seek to develop in our young people here at PBC. We were also able to offer a special draw of 20 winners in each year level who, thanks to the P&C, received a double movie pass. Any student who had received an OPTIMA award in 2016 was in the draw. Middle School Student Leadership

At PBC, we view every child as having leadership potential. Students who display initiative, who are positive role models to others and who are willing to make a positive difference in their school and community are indeed leaders of our school.

The Middle School has a group of students who have accepted formal positions as Student Leaders in 2017. These students will not only show leadership in the ways outlined above, but will represent the Middle School in official ceremonies and events, run activities to build school spirit and culture, fundraise and serve as the voice of the student body.

Congratulations to the following Year 8 students who will serve PBC in 2017:

Israel Blackley
Robbie James
Molly Keen
Scarlet Kidd
Hamish Munro
Jaime Pryor
Ryker Scott
Andy Williams
Lilli Wyatt
Alisa Yamada

The students will receive their badges at a special handover ceremony which will form part of the Year 9 Graduation Assembly. Parents are welcome to join us on Monday 28 November at 8:45am, in the Hall. The Year 8s will commence their leadership roles from this time.

Finally, thank you to the parents who encouraged their students to apply for a leadership position. There was an amazing group of young people who were interviewed. We hope that all leadership aspirants will find ways in the coming year to both contribute to PBC and to develop their leadership potential.

Year 9 Graduation Assembly

We look forward to celebrating the contributions of our Year 9 students as they prepare to complete their Middle Schooling years, at a ceremony in the Hall on Monday, 28 November at 8:45am, in the Hall. Students who have earned special awards will receive them at this assembly. Parents are very welcome to join us for this occasion.

Time For New Uniform?

As the year draws to a close, please consider whether your child has outgrown their current uniform. Girls' skirts should be knee-length, and all uniform items should be tidy and comfortable. For further details, see the school website:

Finishing The Year Well

We are more than half-way through the term! Please encourage your child to maintain clear routines around homework, study, sleep and exercise, as we prepare for the final weeks and exams.

This year our STEM students won the Gold Coast STEM cup! Lucy Tunsted, Scarlet Kidd and Alisa Yamada not only won a drone each but also a free Science on the GO! Show for PBC presented by Griffith University. All students who participated STEM Cup, along with the top 5 students (based on effort and behaviour) from each Middle School Science class were rewarded with a ticket to the show held in week 2 this term. The expert presenter led a fantastic show with the Particle Model as the theme and students were shown how substances could change state. Students were treated to liquid nitrogen demonstrations with shrinking and expanding balloons, and the sublimation of dry ice to a gas. The demonstrations that gathered the most audience excitement was without a doubt the ignition of hydrogen bubbles and an assortment of gas filled balloons. The excitement in the room was palpable and students had an awesome time. Good luck to the students participating in the Term 4 STEM Cup!

Junior Marine Day

Junior Marine Day

A few weeks ago I attended PBC's Junior Marine Day with my fellow 2017 Year 7 Academic Excellence students.

We were invited to participate in fun and educational marine activities. We also had the opportunity to meet some new friends and classmates for next year.

During the plankton activity we used a microscope to identify species of phyto and zoo plankton found in Currumbin Creek.

My personal favourite activity, because it was the most hands on and the dirtiest, was the fish dissection. We dissected sea mullet and observed the location of the heart, liver, kidneys and the swim bladder.

In the aquaculture room we observed the behaviours of red-claw crayfish and learnt about all of the different sections of the crayfish. We got to pick our crayfish up and observed if it would attack or run away when on land. My crayfish attacked my pencil.

I really enjoyed boating on Currumbin Creek. I learnt how to drive a boat. We located the sand banks and we did some life jacket pick-ups which replicates a man-over-board situation.

Overall, it was an enjoyable day and I can't wait to go to PBC next year.

Junior AFL State Finals Wrap Up

Whilst the Senior AFL Reds took out the inaugural AFLQ School Footy State Championship, the Junior Reds (Years 7-9) were unable to complete their own perfect season.

Going into the State Preliminary and Grand Finals on the Sunshine Coast, PBC's Junior team were undefeated, having beaten teams from the Schools of Excellence Division, Independent Schools winner and exhibition games against schools from Victoria and Western Australia.

However, after a comprehensive 97 point win against Cairns SHS in the Preliminary Final, the Grand Final to be played against Helensvale SHS was always going to be a tough task considering the 2 games earlier in the year were tight contests. Helensvale were able to start the game quickly and grabbed the momentum early. This proved too difficult to wrestle back for the Reds, despite the best efforts from the boys involved.

Overall, to finish Queensland State Runners Up is great achievement and will only leave the boys hungry for further success in the coming years.

Racing with excitement - PBC Takes on the V8's

On Friday the 21st of October, our Year.12 Palm Beach State High Currumbin Tourism class got the opportunity to go to the Gold Coast 600 cars event. The majority of the class decided not to come along to this excursion, although 7 people in my grade did attend plus the Year 11s. It was an enjoyable experience to witness some of the world's best race car drivers in action.

The GC600 was located along the picturesque Surfer's Paradise beach front. Despite the hint of fierce summer rays biting down upon us, we kept hydrated and enthusiastic throughout the day. Sunscreen, hats and water are a must! Classic Porsche racing, Indy cars, and of course, the V8 Supercars were only part of the action we experienced on the day.

There was no shortage of activities on offer, but perhaps the most significant for our class was having the privileged opportunity to have an official private press conference with 4 of the best V8 race car drivers in the world. This was certainly a once in a life time opportunity, one that we greatly appreciated. Craig Loundes, James Courtney, Scott Pye and Chris Pither kindly gave us nearly an hour of their valuable time to answer our questions and share their personal life experiences. Initially, we thought this might have been a somewhat gimmicky and unwanted presentation that the drivers were forced to do – However, all four genuinely showed care and interest in participating in our student lead press conference.

To add to the thunderous sound of the cars zipping around at 11:15am, a FA-18 Super Hornet jet plane gave as all a fright flying so close we felt we could nearly touch it. The tremendous noise even brought tears to the eyes of one of the senior students! How embarrassing, hehe.

With all the action that takes place, there are a few recommendations I would like to share. The first recommendation is to take your own chairs or even a picnic blanket to sit on as it gets tiring walking around in the heat all day! If you're taking your children or if you don't like loud noises then it may be a good idea to take some ear muffs or ear plugs. I think that the Gold Coast 600 should have more merchandise stores as there weren't many. Another recommendation of mine would be to take your own food, drinks and lots of water. The food and beverages are very high priced at the Gold Coast 600.

Overall it was a fantastic day, one that the PBC tourism class greatly appreciated.

Middle School Guidance Officer Report

Supporting Young People Through Parental Separation And Divorce

In Australia nearly one in two marriages end in separation and divorce. This directly impacts many children in our schools and adults in our workplaces, parishes and social networks, and quite possibly our own family too. Coping with the family changes that result can be challenging for children and their parents, and for those supporting the family including relatives and friends, work colleagues and school staff. Some knowledge and understanding of what children and young people are dealing with can help us to provide the right kinds of support, when and where it can help.

Reactions of children and young people

Children's reactions to separation and divorce are unique and varied, and can be more easily understood if we look at separation and divorce as a process over time, rather than a one off event. The child's age, their personality, their previous life experiences, what support networks they have around them, and how well their parents are managing all impact on how children react and cope. Paying attention and noticing how each child manages change is a very important role that adults can play as they guide and support young people in adapting to new situations.

Young people in the secondary school years may …

  1. Feel a sense of loss similar to those of other adults involved and in their extended family
  2. Experience the changes in their family as unique, and so feel different and alone
  3. Worry about family finances
  4. Be unwilling to be a part of family arrangements that they feel don't suit them
  5. Feel angry, anxious, sad and overwhelmed
  6. Engage in risky behaviours as a way of dealing with their feelings about the changes

What can children and young people do for themselves?

Children and young people are often caught in the middle when the family changes. However, there are things they can be encouraged to do that may help:

  1. Read (appropriate) picture books and novels to understand they are not alone and that other children are dealing with similar issues
  2. Talk to their parents about how they are feeling
  3. Talk to other interested and supportive adults and peers about how they are feeling
  4. Visit child-focused websites for age-appropriate information about separation and divorce – this can help allay fears and provide facts and ideas on coping.

Parents can also help by:

  1. Finding time, space and attention to spend talking and listening with their child.
  2. Letting children and young people have a say in decision making.
  3. Managing home routines that are constant, warm and reassuring.
  4. Ensuring children are eating well, sleeping enough and getting some exercise.
  5. Letting school teachers know what is going on so that other adults can support their child.
  6. Accepting help from others (whether to mind the children for some parent time out, someone to have a laugh or a cry with, or a trusted adult for children to turn to).

'Below Average' Comic Strip

About the Comic

High school. It's a daunting place, especially when you're at the bottom of the social ladder where we find four friends trying to survive their final days of senior year. Join Marina, Maddison, Amy and Olivia as they embrace adolescence with a refreshing and humorous approach to daily life in this new addition to the Palm Beach Currumbin High School Newsletter.

Below Average is a fortnightly webcomic created by cartoonist Nicholas Cleaver in mid-2010. It follows the day-to-day adventures of four not-so average teenagers: Marina, an inventor suffering with obsessive-compulsive disorder; Maddison, a blissfully ignorant foodaholic; Amy, a sarky game fanatic; and Olivia, the kookiest member of the group.

The strip's primary theme is humour, and focuses largely on friendship, school and the four girls' incompatibility with established society.
