Principal’s Report
Dear Parents,
As an Independent Public School it is vitally important that we share responsibility for the future strategic direction of our school. PBC’s School Council plays a pivotal role in this process and is currently overseeing a project to develop strategic recommendations for a number of important issues facing PBC.
As part of this process we are seeking interested school community members to join one of six different workgroups to focus on the following areas:
- Sports Excellence
- Academic Excellence
- Creative Arts Excellence
- Inclusive Education
- Facilities Infrastructure Planning
- Information Technology
Workgroup members will be involved in:
- Reviewing policy, research and emerging local challenges
- Identification of lighthouse practices in the field
- Conduct stakeholder consultation
- Prepare recommendations to guide strategy for the next five years.

Parent Teacher Interviews
A huge thankyou to everyone who attended parent teacher interviews. With over 2200 individual interviews scheduled, it was an enormous effort that produced great results. The vast majority of people left the interviews happy, informed and inspired.
The next steps following on from these interviews is to debrief with your child about the conversations that took place during the interviews and use these conversations to shape goals for your child to work toward in Term 2 and throughout the year. If there are any questions remaining please do contact your child’s teachers via email; email addresses can be found listed on the school website staff contact list.

School based Traineeships and Apprenticeships (SATs)
Year 10 and 11 students should consider applying for a SAT as this gives the following benefits:
- Paid employment which develops both life and employability skills
- A nationally recognised Certificate III qualification
- 8 Queensland Certificate of Education points
- Tertiary options - A rank of 68 (for all cert IIIs) which is currently equivalent to an OP of 15
All SATs take 12 months to complete and must be started in Year 10 and 11. Year 10 students are strongly encouraged to apply.

Social Media
Social Media is being used in everyday life by people of all ages and backgrounds. Young people use social media to communicate with friends and family. Social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Musically, Whatsapp and Snapchat can include the following methods of communication:
- Instant messaging/text chat
- Video chat – via a webcam
- Online chat rooms
- 3D interactive communities
Sexting is a concerning issue that involves young people taking explicit images or videos of themselves or others and sending them to their friends or to other people. There are significant social and legal concerns for the young person once a photo or video is transmitted as the young person loses complete control of where this video/image ends up.
This topic has been addressed in the Social Emotional Leaning Program as well as in year level weekly assemblies. From the Schools perspective, sexting or the possession or sharing of pornographic material and publication or posting of recorded sound or video of School or school events contrary to the schools Responsible Behaviour Plan will result in a student being suspended and or excluded from School. The information the school gathers is also passed onto the police for further investigation.
We urge parents/care givers to have these conversations with your student to support and encourage safe online behaviour.

Respectful Relationships
In the last few weeks we have been discussing the basis of respectful relationships and the idea of using manners to demonstrate respect to others whether in the classroom, playground or wider community. We have also been referencing domestic and family violence prevention month at assemblies. This is an important topic to speak to students about as it touches so many lives. We will not only be raising awareness but also providing information to students about how they can seek support or access to resources. These are big topics and I would encourage you to extend on this discussion at home with your young person as they may have questions for you about this.
Academic Review
The Middle School Team have concluded the review meetings and parent teacher interviews have occurred where requested. If you have missed seeing a teacher or making a booking please contact the school to arrange this. This is the time that students need to be working on the actions to achieve their OPTIMA goals for Term 2. There is still ample time to impact on their next report card. I will be encouraging all students who have underachieved to increase their effort and aim to receive a most improved award at Optima assembly next term.
Semester 2 Planning
The Middle School Leadership team is currently planning for the second half of the academic year. Preparation includes reviewing our resourcing and support to classrooms and the use of our classroom teacher aides, analysing diagnostic data on student literacy and numeracy levels, which will be updated with NAPLAN results as soon as these become available for our 7 and 9 students and furthering our support of students with disabilities.
In recent weeks, we have successfully transitioned around a dozen students to a more inclusive timetable which sees them participating in core classes for science and humanities. You will see if you read The Principal’s Report of the newsletter that inclusion is one of our strategic renewal areas. It is at the forefront of our department’s current agendas and at PBC we are excited about these changes and the benefits and equity they will demonstrate for our students.
General Enrolment Year 7, 2017
For parents who have younger siblings in Year 6, I would like to remind you that our General Enrolment night is on Wednesday 8 June from 6.30pm in PBC Theatre. Invitations will be coming to primary schools for all students in our catchment area.
This night is not for Excellence Programs, and parents of students in these programs who are out of our catchment areas are reminded that the sibling rule does not apply in this case.
The night is not compulsory but provides an opportunity to meet the Middle School team and to gain information about the current enrolment process. Enrolment packs will be available at the end of the presentation. Further details can be found on our school website.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Head of Middle School Report
There are now less than twenty school days left until the school holidays. Students have been reminded to reflect upon their Optima goals and consider what it is that they need to do to earn their best possible results. Unlike the Interim Report, which may only reflect one piece of assessment, the Semester Report shows a pattern of learning achievement, effort and behaviour.
Assessment may be due right up to the end of term. Please respect our Holiday dates as removing students from class can make assessment difficult and stressful for them.
Parent Teacher Evenings
Thank you to every parent and caregiver who attended our Parent Teacher Evenings earlier in the month. We hope that you found the conversations informative and constructive, as we work in partnership with you to provide the best learning outcomes for your children.
Should you wish to follow up with any teacher, please email them in the first instance, using the addresses on the Staff Contacts list found on our website.

Community Service
Does your child participate in a community service activity, such as Surf Lifesaving, coaching a sporting team or helping an animal welfare organisation? If so, we would love to acknowledge their efforts formally here at school. For details, please click here.

Being Busy Versus Being Stressed
Some students find the end of semester a particularly challenging time, especially if multiple assessment pieces over a short time span is a new experience for them.
A useful way to phrase discussion with your young person about this is that they will be busy, but they should not be stressed. A busy student has many demands on their time. They are completing the allocated home work each night, as well as undertaking their own study and review of topics, and work on assignments. The busy student has their assessment due dates written up and placed in a space that the whole family can see. They know what is due, and when. They set about tasks in ‘baby steps’, doing a little at a time and in a logical way. They ask their teachers for assistance early when they do not understand.
The stressed student doesn’t do homework or hasn’t written it down. They don’t study until the night before the test, or may not even know there is a test coming up! The stressed student looks at a large task and puts off starting work on it. They don’t let the teacher know that they are struggling with concepts.
Students should expect to be busy – there is no other option when you are striving to achieve your best. Key things that Middle School students should be doing now to avoid being stressed are:
- Use the Student Planner effectively
- Have assessment dates clearly displayed at home
- Break tasks into achievable chunks and work methodically on these
- Start writing summaries and study notes for exams
- Stay in touch with teachers when work is difficult
These strategies, in combination with good habits around sleep, diet and exercise, should help your young person maintain a sense of control over the coming busy weeks.

PBC Named Champions of the QLD State Philosothon
PBC had a clean sweep for the awards presented at 2016 Philosothon at the University of Queensland (UQ) on Saturday 14 May. Michelle Borg and Tommaso Lo Giudice shared first place for Most Promising Philosophers and the team of ten seniors took out overall first place for Queensland.
It was an early start on the bus to UQ. Over one hundred students registered at 9:00am from schools across Queensland including: Brisbane State High, Church, St Lawrence, Nudgee, Kenmore, Marist Brothers, Kelvin Grove, Cavendish Rd and AB Patterson. The students then discussed topics in a Community of Inquiry for the remainder of the day. The purpose was to come to some consensus with regard to perennial dilemmas: Could machines be moral; We are who we choose to be; Liberty consists of doing what one desires; The unexamined life is not worth living.
Points were awarded for speakers based on their ability to apply logic and reason, think outside the square and be respectful and inclusive of others’ opinions. Across the board, PBC students were a standout, each contributing to the team’s overall score. Amanda Stewart and I are both very proud philosophy teachers; these students are a credit to our school.

Middle School Student Leaders Attend Gold Coast Junior Secondary Leadership Summit
On 16 and 17 May, the Middle School Student Leaders attended the Gold Coast Junior Secondary Leadership Summit at Runaway Bay. At this very successful summit, the students focussed on influence as a leadership goal. In addition to workshops, they saw presentations by guest leaders including Cr. Cameron Caldwell, Hon. Stuart Robert, Dan Trollope and Holly Ferling; participated in a Public Speaking Challenge and also a Charter Signing.
Through these sessions students were provided opportunities to develop their skills in critical and creative thinking, understanding differences, consultation, empowerment, public speaking skills, collaboration, team building and putting ideas into action.
The team will now present their work to the Middle School administration, and look for ways to implement the fundraising project they developed – Santagrams – in Term 4.
Congratulations on your success at the Summit, Middle School Student Leaders!

Year 12 Geography Camp
Recently the Year 12 Geography class went on their annual camp to the World Heritage Listed Binna Burra section of Lamington National Park, and over two days students investigated the biodiversity of one of the last remaining rainforests in South East Queensland.
The first day we trekked the 18km Coomera Falls circuit which was an unforgettable experience. Littered throughout the seven hour hike were some incredible views, as we discovered a range of plant and animal species, and learned of the Indigenous history in the area and the impacts of human settlement. Needless to say there were some very tired bodies around the campfire that night but some big smiles as well.
On the second day the students took part in a range of field work activities to determine the complexity of the rainforest environment within natural and regenerated areas. Tests conducted included tree height, soil pH, light intensity, canopy cover and relative humidity among others. The data collected will be used in their upcoming reports.
After a jam-packed two days the bus trip home was pretty quiet, but all had an amazing time and took home some memories they won’t forget.
A big thankyou to Mrs Maccan for joining us and our tour guide Chris Audley from Second Nature.

PBC Leos Club News
Palm Beach Currumbin State High School is a part of the wider community and providing a community service to the students of PBC was a rewarding experience for the Leo members who organised a handball competition for the Middle School. The Leo members donated canteen vouchers and other prizes for the winners and the participants said they thoroughly enjoyed the activity. Thanks to those Leo members who gave up their lunch hour to run the event.
The Leo club welcomed a guest speaker, Damien Aird, to their Leo meeting. He spoke about the Woodwork and Craft Club that he is President of, and outlined to the Leo members the purpose of the club and the organisations it supports. Members of the club also teach simple wood working skills to students and offer support to two women’s shelters. The Leo club donated $500 to Woodwork and Craft Club to support this worthy community organisation.

Judgement call: maturity, emotions, and the teenage brain
Generation after generation, one thing parents can count on is being baffled or confused by their children’s behavior. While new generations of teenagers have access to things their parents did not–Google Glass and Apple’s newly announced iWatch could be the smartphones of tomorrow–this does not explain why teenagers, regardless of generation, continue to behave in ways that seem to be clearly irrational.
It turns out that there is a reason for confusing teenage behavior: the brain may not fully develop until around age 25, meaning that teenagers are left with a brain going through growing pains, just like the rest of their body.
Specifically, teens make irrational decisions because their brains are processing thoughts and emotions irrationally.
The good news is that being a teenager doesn’t inherently mean being rude or disrespectful. The bad news is that teenagers are essentially not fully equipped to deal with certain real world problems.
As a parent, understanding this stage in your teen’s development could make the difference in getting through to them. Instead of treating them like they’re out to get you, and ultimately heightening the conflict, speaking to them from a place of sympathy and understanding will work to both parties’ benefit.
If you want to know more about just why the teenage brain is this way, and exactly how it affects judgment, the infographic below should make things clearer.

PBC will receive flashing school zone signs on Thrower Drive as part of the 2016-2017 flashing school zone sign program; a commitment from the Palaszczuk Government.
The installation of flashing school zone signs at PBC aims to improve visibility of the school zone and serve as an active reminder for motorists to slow down around children.

‘Below Average’ Comic Strip
About the Comic
High school. It's a daunting place, especially when you're at the bottom of the social ladder… where we find four friends trying to survive their final days of senior year. Join Marina, Maddison, Amy and Olivia as they embrace adolescence with a refreshing and humorous approach to daily life in this new addition to the Palm Beach Currumbin High School Newsletter.
Below Average is a fortnightly webcomic created by cartoonist Nicholas Cleaver in mid-2010. It follows the day-to-day adventures of four not-so average teenagers: Marina, an inventor suffering with obsessive-compulsive disorder; Maddison, a blissfully ignorant foodaholic; Amy, a sarky game fanatic; and Olivia, the kookiest member of the group.
The strip’s primary theme is humour, and focuses largely on friendship, school and the four girls’ incompatibility with established society.
