Principal’s Report

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to Term 4. Our Executive Principal, Mr Stephen Loggie, is currently acting as the Deputy Director General for State Schooling. As a result, I have been given the honour of acting as the Executive Principal until Stephen returns in the middle of this term.

I look forward to leading our wonderful school during this period of time and connecting with many our parents at the wide range of school events and celebration opportunities that recognise student achievement. Throughout this term some of these major events include:

  • Optima Awards – Weeks 4 and 5
  • Sports Awards Evening – Wednesday 4 November
  • Arts Awards Evening – Friday 6 November
  • Academic Awards Night – Tuesday 17 November
  • PBC Alliance Breakfast – Friday 13 November
  • Year 12 Graduation – Thursday 19 November

School Opinion Survey

Each year the Department of Education and Training conducts a ‘School Opinion Survey’ across all State schools. For Palm Beach Currumbin State High (PBC) the results from this survey form a key role in the annual review of our school programs and processes and provide the school administration with an important information source to guide the next stage of our strategic planning.

The 2015 School Opinion Survey results again indicate the high level of satisfaction that the randomly selected parent/caregivers have with our school. For example, the percentage of parent/caregivers who agree that:

  • “Their child is getting a good education at school” – 97.5%
  • “This is a good school” – 97.4%
  • “Their child likes being at this school” – 96.6%
  • “Teachers at this school expect their child to do his or her best” – 97.5%
  • “This school is well maintained” – 98.3%

I would like to take this opportunity to ask all parents to stay connected with our school and in doing so, give your son/daughter the best opportunity to achieve their potential and future aspirations.

I again thank our parent body for your ongoing support.

Changes to Catchment Area

PBC is governed by the Department of Education and Training’s (DET) enrolment management plan. An enrolment management plan seeks to assist schools to ensure that the facilities of the school meets the educational needs of students. Under this plan, new enrolments must meet eligibility criteria, including residing within the catchment area. Please be aware there are also specific guidelines regarding the enrolment of siblings into our school.

Recently, PBC’s catchment area was changed resulting in realignment to the geographical borders of the catchment area. As a result, this has impacted on some areas within our community.

We empathise with parents and the community regarding the impact of any boundary realignment however the school is required to follow the guidelines as outlined in the Enrolment Management Plan and is required to comply. Links to these can be found on our school website and our staff are able to assist with any enquiries.

Senior School Update

What an exciting yet challenging time of year that we have reached for our senior students.

Students in Year 12 are currently balancing their assessment priorities, university applications, graduation plans, and work commitments. The Year 11 cohort is also focused on their end of year academic responsibilities and maintaining QCE eligibility. Some students are also thinking about the leadership opportunities in 2016 and preparing for interviews for these positions. Students in Year 10 should have had made subject selection decisions by now, decisions that can significantly affect their future pathway after school.

As the important adults in their lives, it is our responsibility to keep the students focused and help them keep a balanced routine. It can become overwhelming for a young person to manage the competing demands on their time. By sticking to the basics, regular bed time, eating well, coming to school on time, engaging in their classes, asking for help if necessary; we can help smooth the transitions that these young people are experiencing.

Year 10 and 11 Interim Reports will be emailed home this Friday 16 October. We encourage parents to make time to sit with their students and work through these reports reflecting on both efforts and achievement whilst also setting goals for 2016. If the report raises any questions please feel free to contact class teachers for individual feedback via email or phone, all email addresses can be found by accessing the contact tab on our school website.

In relation to the Year 12 Graduation, to be held on Thursday 19 November, we remind families that guest tickets are now on sale, students may purchase up to four guest tickets each via Student Services. On a very important note, we also remind parents of the message delivered via newsletter last term regarding "after parties". In no way does the school sanction these parties, as they are considered extremely risky and in some cases, illegal. Senior students were advised this week of the school's position and obligation to act if students are involved in organising any part of such an event.

This cohort of Year 12 students has been a fantastic group, they've behaved well and worked hard to achieve great results and pathways after school. We look forward to continuing to support them through their final weeks of schooling to ensure the high standard is maintained.

Alyce Cleary
Director of Senior School

Year 12 notices

Year 12 students are in their last term of schooling. Students and parents need to be aware that the final exit grades are those which will determine their OP, Rank and QCE eligibility. As such, Year 12 students need to ensure that they continue to follow the school motto of nil sed optima, nothing but the best, as they complete their last assessments to the best of their ability. Year 12 students only have five weeks of classes this term before shutdown in Week 6 (Monday 9 November).

All students need to be aware that all assessments must be completed and that students need to be eligible to achieve the Queensland Certificate of Education to attend the school graduation on 19 November. The last scheduled day of school for Year 12 students is Friday 20 November.

All Year 12 students should have by now logged onto the student connect website https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au. This is the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) record of their learning. Students should check that their details are correct especially their address and that all courses have been registered. The QCAA will issue QCE and OPs in early December. Any issues please contact Ms Ashby in Y block.

Year 10 and 11 notices

Subject changes are open now and need to be completed by the end of Week 2. All changes are subject to class sizes and there must be room in the timetable to accommodate the change. Students interested in changing classes need to see Ms Keevers in Y block and complete a subject change form. This form must be changed by parents and the relevant HODS.

Assessment calendars for Term 4 will soon be published on the school website under curriculum/testing and assessment.

Year 11 students are advised that if they wish to commence a School based Traineeships and Apprenticeships (SATs) it must be commenced this year. Year 10 students interested in doing SATs should consider applying and commencing this term.

Year 10 and 11 students have seven weeks of classes and a week of shutdown this term. Year 10 and 11 shutdown exams will commence in the week of 23-27 November. All students may have timetabled exams up to and including the last day. Year 11 students will be practicing their QCS writing task on 27 November.

A reminder that all drafts and assignments are due before 9am on the due date and that exams cannot be given early to students because of other commitments. Please refer to the school assessment policy on the school website for further details.

Middle School News

Welcome back for Term 4. The Middle School is expecting a successful and productive term working with our students. Term 4 is closely linked with our key celebrations for the year as we are sure to achieve wonderful results both in the classroom and out. I know that the next nine weeks will pass very quickly for us all.

This week we have covered our not negotiable again with our students at assemblies, we like to take this time each term to remind students of our high expectations for their attendance, classroom effort and behaviour. We have linked these messages to our Optima Code – Be safe, be respectful and be a learner.

Late last term we launched a twelve month communication plan with our Middle Schoolers where we have a key focus as part of our Optima Code each week.

We have developed an acronym for Optima

O- Optimism
P- Perseverance
T- Trustworthiness
I – Industry
M- Manners
A – Aspiration

This week we have begun with optimism. We value the teaching of optimism as we believe it will build resilience in our students and develop a growth mindset. In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. This view also creates a love of learning and is essential for success. Virtually all great people and leaders have demonstrated these qualities. It is our belief that if we can teach our students a growth mindset, grounded in optimistic thinking, they will have a far better possibility of achieving their goals.

Welfare at PBC

High school and the teenage years are all about change. Changes to routines, changes to relationships, changes to friendships. For young people the changes are immense and can be accompanied by stress, fear, anxiety and rebellion. All people handle change in different ways and young people are no exception.

To help our students succeed and be happy at school, PBC have a number of services available to students. In the Middle School, core class teachers are a great source of support and encouragement. Students forming positive relationships with their teachers is critical for their emotional wellbeing.

When students need extra help with relationships, coping strategies or resilience, the school has a welfare team who can assess their needs and put them in touch with the right person. This may be:

  • Year Coordinator
  • Dean of Students
  • Welfare Officer
  • Guidance Officer

If psychological care is required the school has a psychologist that can be accessed through a mental health care plan available from your GP.

External services can also be accessed and the school can help facilitate this.

You can help with this by talking to your student and contacting the school with any concerns relating to their welfare. The Year Level Coordinator is the best person to contact in the first instance and their contact details are available on the school website.

Peter O’Brien
Deputy Principal Middle School

Welcome Back

The PBC Middle School is once again abuzz with activity as students return for Term 4. Years 7 and 8 are now truly settled into the school, while Year 9 students are preparing to stretch themselves to meet the challenges of Senior School. We look forward to another positive term.

Reporting

A reminder that Middle School Term 3 reports will be emailed home to parents on Friday 16 October. Should you have any particular concerns, do make contact with your child’s teacher through the PBC website; all teacher emails are listed on the staff contact list. Staff are working hard to ensure students have the best possible learning outcomes by the end of the year and welcome your involvement in student improvement.

Should an expected report not arrive by email, do check your junk mail. Following that, please contact the school Administration to rectify the issue.

Student Planners

The PBC Student Planner (‘the Diary’) is our most important personal organisation tool and record. Teachers are currently checking that students have them in class every day and record all homework expectations. Should your child have mislaid theirs, they are now available at Student Services at the Term 4 price of $3.50. Please check that your son or daughter has their planner in their bag and look in it for homework requirements.

Assessment Calendars

The Term 4 Middle School assessment calendar is now available on the PBC website. Students can use this to record all assessment dates. Please note that in the Middle School, assessment is completed up to and including Week 9. It is an expectation that students will complete all assessment before departing at the end of the year.

Year 10 Hospitality News

The Year 10 Hospitality classes are investigating ‘Superfoods’, there are many claims at the moment about a wide range of foods that have special benefit to the diet. There is also a range of commonly eaten foods that are; high in antioxidants, contain beneficial fats for our body, or contain an abundance of nutrients that are beneficial to consume regularly.

The Year 10 Hospitality students will investigate, design, plan and make their own recipe that includes at least two superfoods. The students will then use their own dish and produce a printed ‘recipe’ that is suitable to be included in a cookbook, exploring aesthetically pleasing layouts, fonts, various information that is required in a good recipe as well as food photography as they will include a picture of their own dish.

PBC Girls and Boys Compete in Schools State Championships

An extremely young PBC girls team recently competed in the Schools State Championships at Logan. With two wins from four games over the first two days, the girls were placed into Division 2 part of the draw. A big win over Marymount College was followed with a narrow loss to St Margaret Michaels from Townsville in the semi final. A final day win over Lourdes Hill College resulted in a 3rd place finish in Division 2.

A very young side with a handful of Year 7, 8 and 9 students have represented PBC in the highest regard and should feel very proud of their effort. The team was superbly led by senior student Kyla Hill whose tireless work on both ends of the court set a great example for the girls. Thanks for a great year girls.

While competing very hard, the boys team managed just the one win from their first four games, narrowly going down to three quality sides. In the final two days of the competition the boys produced some of their best results with a couple of convincing wins to finish up in 10th for Division 2.

A special mention goes to Jackson Lahina Brown for his constant high effort in all games. The team is in good hands with some high quality developing players that will have big contributions over the coming years.

A Night with James Morrison – Student Report

“In each performance you are the most experienced you have ever been.”

This was the advice we were given by jazz legend James Morrison. On Monday 14 September, the Palm Beach Currumbin State High School Stage was privileged enough to perform at Synergy: A night with James Morrison. Following several weeks of practice and an all-day workshop in which James helped us to perfect our instrumental technique and performance skills, the band was ready to perform to a crowd of 500, a full house. Despite some initial nerves, the band gave it their all playing everything from blues to swing and funk. James even accompanied us for a rendition of ‘Basin Street Blues’, including a powerful trumpet solo which captivated the audience. For our final number, ‘Jazz Police’ he played alongside Year 12 student, Zane Blaney Grey in an improvisation battle.

Along with performing our own repertoire, we were able to witness the James Morrison Academy Jazz Orchestra play for us; modelling the skills and playing ability we could attain if we continue to pursue our talents. The whole day was just a wonderful reminder of why we play music, why we perform and the joy that it can bring to us as performers and to our audience. We are very thankful for the opportunity to perform and would like to give special thanks the school, the CAX staff, Mr Roberts, and of course our wonderful mentors Mr Hart, Mr Kemp, Ms McClennan and Mrs Latter who made the whole event possible.

Get Happy – There’s a biology to lasting happiness

That uplifting feeling you get when something good happens to you? Researchers now think they know the part of the brain responsible for it—and they suggest we may be able to train ourselves to make those positive emotions last longer.

Their conclusions are based on a study (paywall) conducted by scientists at the University of Wisconsin, where psychologist Aaron Heller and his team conducted an experiment with more than 100 college students. For a period of 10 days, participants were sent text messages about 25 times a day asking them to rank their positive and negative emotions on a scale of 1 to 9, with 1 being a low level of feeling and 9 being the most intense. Once a day, the subjects were invited to play a game of chance: They were asked to guess if a computer-generated number would be above or below 5, and if they were right, they won $15. After the game, participants checked in with their positive and negative emotions every 10 to 15 minutes for the next hour and a half, so that their moods could be monitored.

The researchers also analysed brain scans, taken by an MRI scanner, of 40 participants in the study. Here they found that those who were happier for longer periods of time after winning the game had the longest activation in a part of the brain called the ventral striatum, which helps regulate our reward system.

“People who sustain positive emotion the longest in the course of minutes and hours were those people who showed the most persistent brain activity in an area that’s thought to be responsible for reward and reward learning,” says Heller, who is now on the faculty at the University of Miami. He tells Quartz that there are “dynamics over the course of seconds in the brain that seem to be related to dynamics of emotional experience over the course of minutes in the real world.”

Heller thinks that this research can help scientists understand how we may be able to train ourselves to be happier. This might involve prolonged activation of the ventral striatum, or we might just consciously choose to savor moments of happiness—when we take in a beautiful sunset, for example—in order to make the emotional satisfaction last longer.
