- Community Notices
Dear Parents/Caregivers,
In what was another disjointed year, it was a fantastic effort from the staff and students in that we were able to hold our signature events and provide as many educational opportunities as possible under ever changing circumstances. I would like to thank the parents and community for their support and patience as we managed public health directives and their impact on normal school operations. With holidays approaching, the Christmas break will provide us with the opportunity to reset for 2022.
As we reach the end of the school year, we have received information from our Regional and Central Offices regarding possible changes that schools may have to respond to within very short timeframes in 2022. With the borders re-opening in a few days and the possibilities that this brings, from the commencement of school next year, we will be asking the students to bring and take home each day, their digital learning devices and associated school resources. We have been made aware that school closures, if they are to occur, will happen with minimal notice. In the event of school operations needing to change, our communication strategy will remain with emails being the primary source of information and social media as the secondary source of details.
I would like to farewell the families who are moving on from PBC this year and wish everyone else a great holiday season.

Australian Business Week
Friday night saw the culmination of yet another successful Australian Business Week; we think the best yet! Year 9 Academic Excellence students were amazing. While the rest of the school were doing an alternate program, we asked our students to work harder than ever before. In one week, they made eight business decisions, wrote and delivered an oral report to shareholders, put on a Trade Display for all PBC students to participate in with games and prizes. They also made a commercial video.
Winners of the six awards were presented with their trophies at the Awards dinner held at the Currumbin RSL. Bragging rights will go on well into 2022.
Thank you to Greater Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce and McDonalds at The Pines for sponsoring this event.
Netball Excellence Program
PBC Sports Excellence program is excited to announce two new coaching additions to the Netball Excellence Program for 2022. We welcome to the PBC Reds, as the Senior Netball Excellence Head Coach, Linda Peterson. Linda was one of the Bond University Bull Sharks foundation coaches in 2019, initially with the Ruby team then the Sapphire series Coach in 2021. Linda was an integral part of the Bull Sharks and before that, the Golden South Jaguars.
Supporting Linda as High Performance Consultant, we welcome Temepara Bailey, newly announced 2022 Titans Sapphire Series Head Coach. Temepara is also an ex-Silver Fern player, representing New Zealand on 89 occasions and winning a World Championship and is a 2 x Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist in Netball.
We are thrilled to welcome these two amazingly experienced and talented new coaches to our Netball Excellence program and are excited for what 2022 and beyond will bring for the PBC REDS netballers.
2021 Gig Night
On Saturday night, 11 artists performed at PBC’s annual Gig Night at Soundlounge as a part of the Working Musicians program.
The evening was a fabulous showcase of the amazing work and talent in WMP. A huge credit to all of the students and Working Musicians director Liza Davidson! Thank you to everyone who came along to support live original music and our students.
WMP on ABC Radio
WMP students, Bonnie Kruger and Damon Perkins visited ABC Radio ‘The Drive’ program last week to talk about all things Gig Night as part of the Working Musicians Program. Bonnie also performed her original song ‘Feel It’. It was a wonderful experience for the students and added to the excitement of the upcoming Gig Night.

Engineering Confidence’ Women & Girls Workshop
ACCIONA and Surfing Australia continued their great work through the ACCIONA ‘Engineering Confidence’ Women & Girls Workshop held in November at Palm Beach Currumbin State High. The event, hosted by Jessica Skarratt, was designed to not only build confidence in young women, but kickstart thoughts and discussions about real career opportunities in the construction engineering industry via STEM.
There were plenty of questions and enthusiastic discussion after the room heard from the breakfast's panel including World Tour Surfer and ACCIONA Ambassador Isabella Nichols, Surfing Australia Athlete and Tru Starling and Katelyn Hoad – Project Engineer from ACCIONA.
Isabella said: “The thing that excites me most about a career in STEM is having so many different opportunities, whether it's civil, mechanical or environmental. There are so many pathways you can take and even if you start on one pathway, you can crossover.”
After opening up to questions from students, the panel joined the group in a brain-stimulating hands-on spaghetti STEM challenge – where students had to build a structure using spaghetti and tape and add a heavy object to the top of it – that had all involved fully engaged and racing for a team win.
Watch a highlights video from the workshop here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmBjq-ZEUQI

With a lot of support and hard work from his Dad and his Sponsor, Slideways as well as Zenith Race Solutions, where Harry has been doing the work experience and working additional Wednesdays to get the job done. Anxiety doesn’t have to be something to worry about
Anxiety in children and teenagers can start out small, but may end up affecting their daily lives. When overly worried, some kids don’t talk about it. They may even seem angry or irritable, rather than anxious or they may get frequent stress headaches or stomach aches. But with parents’ help, children can learn how to reduce their own anxious feelings. The new Fear-Less Triple P Online program has practical Triple P – Positive Parenting Program tips and ideas – and it’s free, thanks to the Queensland Government. Learning more about coping with uncomfortable emotions can help you use positive methods to respond to child and teenage anxiety. Read more about this hot parenting topic here or for more free Triple P programs, go to: www.triplep-parenting.net.
