Dear Parents, Caregivers,

Capra_Chris.jpgI would like to thank the past and present PBCSHS community members who contributed to making our 50th Anniversary celebrations such a success.  The displays showed just how much the school has changed and evolved over the past five decades.  Many of the items on display were loaned / donated to the school and they brought back many memories for the former students and staff.  The performing Arts students were their usual high standard on the afternoon into the evening. The feedback we received on the Sunset Soiree was positive as over 200 former PBC staff and students caught up, in some cases, for the first time in 45 years. Visit our Facebook page for the full photo album of these celebrations. Coming up on Saturday 3 September, we have 'Reminisce' Celebrating 50 years of the Performing Arts at PBC Night. Finally, the blue and red 50th jackets that some of the students are wearing are being made available to the public. You will find the link to order here:

https://pbcsw.struddysonline.com.au/.

Year 10 and 12 students have their exams this week with all other students working on existing or new units of work. School holidays commence at 3:05pm Friday 24 June with school re-commencing on Monday 11 July.

We have been advised by GCCC that work will be undertaken on the Board Walk that runs behind our southern boundary over the holidays. In addition, there are substantial maintenance works happening on the school grounds over the holidays and the school will be closed (with the exception of the Saturday markets).

OPTIMA CODE - Be a Learner

Every day counts… a day here or here doesn’t seem like much, but did you know that if you miss just one day each fortnight it is equal to 20 days per year, which is 4 weeks per year, and therefore, from Prep to Year 12 that is nearly 1 ½ years of school that is missed. This means that the best your child can achieve is equal to finishing Year 11.

Being at school and being ready to learn is vital in student academic achievement, effort and behaviour. When we speak about being ‘Ready to Learn’ we are talking about having the right equipment, such as, textbook, pencil case, calculator and a charged laptop, so that we can be fully engaged with classroom activities and tasks. Being ‘Ready to Learn’ is also about our mental health, ensuring that we are eating healthy, exercising, limiting our technology and getting enough sleep at night.

By ‘Being a Learner’ and following the Optima Code, students can receive Optima slips and Optima postcards, which can earn Optima credits, and then exchange these credits for rewards. Please refer to the Optima Credit Menu for prizes.

js_image.PNG

In week 10, we will hold our End of Term Pizza Lunch and End of Semester Surprise Activity. If your child has enough credits for these rewards please have them register at D block Student Services.

To support our Junior Secondary students there is student tutoring available every Monday Period 4 (Creekview room) and Thursday 3.25pm – 4pm in IDT rooms.

Staff emails are available on the PBC website and we encourage parent/caregivers to email your child’s academic teacher if you have any questions or concerns. Your child’s academic Semester 1 report will be available at the end of Term 2.

On behalf of our teaching staff and our Senior School Team we wish all of our students the very best in their end of Semester exams and assessment, and a safe and restful mid-year break. Term 3 will welcome a raft of opportunities for students to perform and excel within their chosen fields, we look forward to celebrating every success.

A reminder that this week Year 10 exams will run each day for the duration of the week, with Year 12 shutdown exams commencing on Wednesday 22 June. All Year 11 students are required to attend classes for the duration of the final week. Exam timetables can be accessed here: https://pbc-shs.eq.edu.au/curriculum/testing-and-assessment

We look forward to welcoming back all year levels for Term 3 on Monday 11 July.

Mid-Year OPTIMA Awards

Our mid-year OPTIMA Awards acknowledging outstanding academic, cultural, sporting and community achievements across the first Semester will be held on Tuesday 2 August in the PBC Hall. This event is invite-only for award recipients and their families. We expect invitations for Year 11 and 12 recipients to be sent home in Week 1 of Term 3, with Year 10 students invited in Week 3 after the release of Semester 1 reports. We look forward to celebrating the success of these students in this revised format for the first time this year!

Whole-School Athletics Carnival

Our school Athletics Carnival is due to be held on Friday Week 3 of Term 3, 29 July. This is a whole-school event, with attendance encouraged for all students wishing to participate in the raft of competitive and fun events held. Students will also be able to pre-register for throwing events, to be held the day prior during Period 1 and 2 via the Sports Office. Please be aware that on this day, students will not be able to sign out during the day unless the appointment is approved prior, students are required to attend the full day event.

Useful Study Techniques

The link below is an academic paper on improving study techniques amongst students, which may be useful when parents are discussing the best way to prepare for external exams. Note late night cramming whilst listening to music has been proven not to be effective:

Over the past two weeks Year 10 Food Technology students have held a Marketta as part of their assessment. Students were allocated a country where they had to design, price and produce their dish to sell to students of PBC during lunch break. The event was very successful with all stalls selling out. The dishes ranged from Nutella churros, Italian pizza, hot dogs, American burgers, Japanese Teriyaki beef rice bowls, German cookies, Mexican nachos and much more.

Next term Year 10 Food Technology students will be moving on to Herbs and spices unit of work where their focus will be exploring different herbs and spices in order to create their own dish.

Year 9’s unit of work will be Indigenous Foods/Bush tucker where students will investigate native Australian ingredients and learn how they can incorporate them into their cooking.

Year 11 Hospitality students are working towards planning and implementing a café event where the students will sell a variety of Toasties and beverages to staff members while the Year 12 Hospitality students will focus on topics related to working in the hospitality industry in preparation for their final exam.

Lastly, students in the Certificate II Kitchen Operation and Certificate III Hospitality have continued to run the morning coffee shop and junior tuckshop Tuesday – Thursday and successfully served a delicious breakfast for their second Alliance Breakfast function of the year.

Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show visit

Recently the Year 12 Aquatic Practices students attended the Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show to explore the world of boating and marine careers associated with the marine industry. Students enjoyed the awesome display of boats from tinnies up to multimillion-dollar super yachts. We were given a demonstration of how cook and eat chilli oysters from local fishing/weather expert Paul Burt which many of the students tried for the first time with mixed reactions. Students took time to engage with many experts in the marine industry about a possible career in the industry when they complete school. All students agreed that the day was an awesome experience.

The Hot Potato Band are a national big band treasure. With instruments ranging from the sousaphone to a microphone-alternate megaphone, the band has performed at various venues and festivals across the country. On Monday 6 June, PBC was lucky enough to receive a visit from the band. Their flash-mob style entrance into the Q block Theatre didn’t fail to impress, and perhaps inspired some of us to incorporate it into future performances. Stage Band 1 and 2 members participated in a workshop with the crew, virtually sight-reading their original song ‘Mystery Man’. We then performed this alongside the band, in front of Instrumental Music and Music Excellence students and staff. Not only were we inspired to bust a few ‘hot potato’ moves, but 10 students practiced their improvising skills, soloing in front of our own peers.

Two weeks later, we had another performance opportunity for the Gala Day and the Sunset Soiree here at PBC. A group of selected Music Excellence musicians acted as buskers for Open Day, our string players did a fabulous job welcoming the guests to the evening event, and the woodwind quartet continued the music whilst alumni students were reuniting with their peers.

Overall, our experiences this term have almost entirely made up for the two interrupted years of no performances.

Vicki Wilson Netball

The PBC Netball Excellence girls formed 1 senior team to compete in the Vicki Wilson Cup qualifier and 2 junior teams to compete in the Vicki Wilson Shield qualifiers. This competition was a fierce battle between many talented netballing schools in the southeast region of the Gold Coast.

The senior girls all came prepared and put on a good showing throughout the day. In the main we showed some clever circle attack, smothering defence and brilliant feeds. We were competitive in all matches except at times during the Somerset game who are the benchmark and current champions of the entire VWC competition.

The highlight of the day was our nailbiting one-goal win against All Saints, in which we remained composed and absorbed the immense pressure put on during their late comeback.

We finished tied 2nd place in our pool, missing out on playing in the finals by a count back. With a number of selected players unable to play that day, the ladies stepped up and achieved some good wins.

All Netball X players contributed on and off the court, with special mention to Jacinta Lee and Lily O’Donnell who assisted on the day with coaching and managing our junior development side to the Grand Final in their division.

The Junior White team competed in the development division and made it to the Grand Final, unfortunately going down. The girls played tough netball and showed courage and resilience through the whole day especially considering this, for many, was their first time representing PBC.

The Junior Red team was playing at high stakes for an opportunity to move to the Vicki Wilson Shield finals that will be held at Nissan Arena later in the year. In previous years, these girls missed out on this opportunity, which pushed them even harder to qualify this year. The girls came up against Southport State High School in their last game to decide who will proceed to the finals. The girls displayed great composure during the dying minutes of the game and came up on top by 3 points.

Overall, the Vicki Wilson qualifiers were a great learning experience for the Palm Beach Currumbin Netball Excellence students.
