Senior Tuckshop Renovations
The Senior School Tuckshop renovations have started. For the remainder of 2019, we will be serving the senior students out of the middle school tuckshop through the Trade Training Centre. The senior students will have a separate serving point to the middle school students so as not to interupt the usual middle school student lines.
2020 Next Step survey
The Queensland Government will conduct its annual statewide survey of Year 12 completers in 2020. The Next Step survey is a brief, confidential survey that gains a comprehensive picture of the employment, study and life choices made by Queensland school completers in the year after they finish Year 12.Between March and June next year, our current Year 12 students will receive a letter from the Minister for Education or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician’s Office inviting you to complete the survey. To enable them to reach you, please ensure your contact details are correct in your learning account by logging into www.studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au

Year 12
All students need to be aware that all assessment must be completed and that students need to be eligible to achieve the Queensland Certificate of Education to attend the school graduation on 13 November. The last scheduled day of school for Year 12s is Friday 15 November.
On behalf of the school community I would like to wish all Year 12 students the best as they begin their post schooling adventures.
Release of year 12 results
The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will release student QCEs, OPs and Senior Statements through student learning accounts on the Student Connect website, https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au, from 9:00am on Saturday 14 December 2019. QCS results will be released into student’s learning accounts on Wednesday 13 November.
Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results. Students will be able to access their results more quickly if they have previously activated their learning account. Students have been emailed and reminded on many occasions to log into this portal to check their account details but many have chosen not to do so.
Senior Education profiles will be mailed out by the QCAA from Monday 16 December.
OP ineligible students wishing to know their Rank need to contact the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC) directly on 1300 GO QTAC (1300 467 822) or http://www.qtac.edu.au; as these are not automatically sent out to students.

Year 10 and 11 Exams
Year 10 and 11 Shutdown Exams will commence in the week of 25 to 29 November. The shutdown timetable has been published on the school website. All students may have timetabled exams up to and including the last day.
The last day of school for year 10 and 11 students is Friday 29 November.
Student should by now be well aware that they must be in full school uniform to sit exams and that it is their responsibility to ensure they are present in the correct room with all necessary equipment at least 10 minutes before the exam commences.
A reminder that all drafts and assignments are due before 9:00am on the due date and that exams cannot be given early to students because of other commitments. The school assessment policy is also published on the same link above as shutdown exam timetables.
A reminder that in 2020 all Year 10 and 12 assessment will be scheduled for the last week of each term. Year 11s will have a different schedule for Term 1 and 2 however will also have exams in the last week of school in Terms 3 and 4.

Lots of exciting traineeship opportunities are still available in the Pathway Centre Y Block for Year 10’s in Term 4. Job boards are updated regularly with new positions. Students can collect a registration form and apply now.

Attendance Congratulations
We are very proud of our 400 Middle School students that have reached the 95% attendance target in 2019. The P&C support this and will be rewarding those students with an opportunity to win an Event Cinema Movie ticket for 2. We will draw the prize during our final Optima assembly in Week 8. Congratulations to all students and good luck for the final draw prize.
End of Year Program
The 2019 Middle School ‘End of Year Program’ will begin on Wednesday 4 December with a House Carnival and will continue an alternative educational program until Friday 13 December. We are very pleased that students will be involved in a variety of activities including Year 7 Camp, Year 8 Camp, Year 9 Work Experience and Musical rehearsals.
Murri Jarjum
Our Murri Jarjum students in Term 3 are participating in the Deadly Choices new initiative “Good Quick Tukka’ program. Students spend two weeks obtaining their food safety certificate, before spending the next five Wednesday morning creating an assortment of healthy meals together. The breakfast fruit cup was enjoyed by all students.
Community Service Program
PBC is committed to fostering a balanced, yet dynamic curriculum within a friendly community where all members may achieve their potential. PBC students have a strong sense of personal responsibility; demonstrate initiative and commitment to our school and our community. Our Community Service Program aims to engage students in community service participation and encourage reflection to promote service learning.
Current opportunities for Middle School students to engage in community service include:
- Leo’s Club
- Extracurricular opportunities offer a number of community service activities such as Cooking for the Homeless, aged care visits, the prep reader program and mentoring programs
- Recreational sport such as unpaid refereeing or game official eg: water runner or timekeeper, canteen volunteer, coach/assistant coach and clinics, maintenance work of facilities or equipment and any volunteer work at a club or community event
- Volunteering Gold Coast offers hundreds of opportunities each week
Making your Hours Count
Students are asked to submit a participation form which details the activity they did, the date/s, hours completed and a contact person who can verify their participation. These forms are available from Middle School Student Reception or can be downloaded from the PBC website.
Completed forms should be returned to Middle School Student Reception. Students who do so by the end of term will have their hours count towards the next round of OPTIMA Awards.
Year 7 Optima
Congratulations to all the Year 7 students that received awards at out Term 4 Optima Assembly. What an outstanding group of students.
STEM Cup – The Ultimate Challenge
Seven weeks. Seven challenges. Two bonus points challenges. One awesome STEM Cup.
STEM Cup is an initiative ran by Griffith University. Over seven weekly challenges, teams from all over the Gold Coast and Brisbane battled it out to see who would make it to the top ten teams going to the grand final for their division.
South Gold Coast alone saw a total of 47 teams from the primary and secondary school division competing, with three of these teams being from PBC.
Over the seven competition weeks, we competed in challenges such as code breaking, game development using only PowerPoint, designing oil tankers with a limited budget, a trivia competition and much more in the science, technology, engineering and maths fields, every Tuesday afternoon.
Then there was the nerve-wracking wait until the scores were updated every Friday.
Our team the PhysKids (Jett Mance, Cameron Thompson, and myself, Layla Ahern) managed to secure second place overall, granting us entry to the grand finals at Griffith University.
The grand finals were crazy. Unfortunately, we didn’t place in the top three going to the super finals, but it was an awesome day. The first challenge was essentially a giant board game, where we had to work together to answer trivia questions to get to the end. The only catch? The person walking on the squares that made up the board- the game piece- wasn’t allowed to speak for the entire hour. They could only mime their thoughts! This was a real challenge, especially since I was the game piece!
The second and final challenge was an engineering challenge –our design brief was to create a roller coaster for a marble with four turns and a functioning loop for bonus points. The roller coaster was required to go for 10-15 seconds. Unfortunately, none of the ten teams met the time, but there were some really innovative designs.
Both of these challenges, and this entire experience, has been a blast. I would highly recommend STEM cup as a challenging and rewarding experience for all.

Sports Awards Night 2019
Over 270 people attended PBC’s Sports Awards Night at The Currumbin RSL to celebrate the success of teams and individuals.
State championship teams in junior boys and girls AFL, Kayaking, Surf league and the U19 Boys MR Shield (Surfing) highlighted what has been a successful year in team sport.
Individually PBC students once again performed admirably across a wide range of sports. Overall The REDS celebrated seventy seven Queensland representatives with twenty five of these students going on to either medal at an Australian title or be selected in an Australian team.
Students also got the opportunity to hear from our guest speakers Ali Day and Tom Dearden about what it takes to succeed in the tough world of professional sport.
Finally congratulations to our four sportspeople of the year.

Vicki Wilson Shield - Netball
Congratulations to the PBCs Junior netball team who placed 3rd in the 2019 State Championships. Vicki Wilson Shield is the premier school netball competition, endorsed by Netball Queensland, and has the highest participation with both public and private schools, for girls in Years 7, 8 and 9, in QLD.
Year 7 Technology
In Semester 2 Year 7 students were tasked with making coaster stands from start to finish, planned and evaluated. They very much enjoyed the project and were proud of their coasters. Well done 7F.
Year 8 Food Technology
In Semester 2 students were given an opportunity to develop their food hygiene and safety skills. Students learnt to prepare and cook a range of dishes, including Fried Rice, San Choy Bow, Breakfast wraps, Pizza with a homemade base as well as range of other delicious dishes. The design task for Year 8 - Let's Celebrate, tasked the students with developing a themed party invitation and small novelty cake that would be suitable for a teenager. The Year 8 Food technology teachers along with the classroom aide Miss Hill worked with the students on developing their design ideas and concepts, bring them to life, as you can see the students made some very impressive cakes and invitations, possibly some future pastry chefs in the making.

Rhythmic Gymnastics
Congratulations to PBC's Sunny Bower, our level 9 rhythmic gymnast. Sunny competed in the following Queensland, National and International events this year with the following results:
OHK CUP JAPAN (March 2019) - 10th place individual apparatus routine
QLD CHALLENGE 1 (June 2019) - 1st place overall
QLD CHALLENGE 2 (JULY 2019) - 1st place overall
QLD CUP (AUGUST 2019) - 1st place overall
QLD STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS (AUGUST 2019) - 1st place overall
AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CLUBS CARNIVAL (SEPTEMBER 2019) - 1st place overall, 3 gold and 1 silver medals

Gold Coast Junior Council 2019
Congratulations to Hamish Munro and Jaime Pryor for representing PBC with distinction at the Gold Coast Junior Council program this year. Both students displayed great leadership skills throughout the year and devoted significant amounts of time to activities that benefit and promote the youth of our community. Hamish was elected as a member of the executive committee for the year and Jaime was always on hand to assist the committee and be an enthusiastic volunteer at key GCJC events. Congratulations and thank-you for representing PBC with pride.
International Students Visit Cook Island
Recently a group of international students from PBC had the opportunity to visit Cook Island just of the coast at Tweed Heads. The students spent several hours snorkelling in the beautiful shallow waters off the island. They saw a whale and its calf resting in the protected waters, dolphins, a variety of marine life including
Ethics Olympiad
Palm Beach Currumbin SHS competed for the first time in the Middle School Ethics Olympiad held at The Southport School taking out third place. Over 80 students and 16 schools from the Gold Coast and Brisbane took part in the event. Students spent the day discussing ethics, the right course of action, in a variety of scenarios.

Year 7 Camp
Year 7s have the opportunity to enjoy an end of year camp at Midginbil Hill. The RSVP date has been extended. Year 8 Camp

Year 9 Celebration Dance
The PBC Year 9 Celebration Dance is a fun party for our Year 9 Students to top off a great year and mark the finish of their middle school years. Container Deposit Scheme
Palm Beach Currumbin State High students have many eco-projects on the go and need your help to continue their great work. You can help by bringing along your recyclable containers to PBC on any Wednesday. Staff will be at the Oval entrance on Thrower Drive from 7-9am to take your containers off your hands. PBC will then send them on for recycling and all money raised goes 100% into funding our student-driven eco-projects.
Local businesses, residents, students and staff are all welcome to donate. Containers can be received in any sort of bag/box. We have free envirobags available for you to take to collect your next load of eligible containers in.
If you can't make it to the drop off you can also still donate your containers to PBC at your local container deposit centre by using the code #C10051453. Yearbook 2019!

Inspire Physiotherapy - Student Focus
One of the most common presentations we see in the clinic with adolescents is pain at the front of the knee. This is particularly common with active kids and kids who go through a rapid growth spurt. Many of us just attribute it to growing pains but what many don't understand is that in a lot of cases it is very manageable and with a few simple steps the pain can resolve or at least be reduced significantly. So how do we manage Osgood Schlatter's syndrome? The first thing we want to do is reduce symptoms. Some simple things to do are reduce the load on the tendon are modifying the activities that you do, this might mean taking a rest from aggravating activities or just doing less of them, icing when the knee is sore, taping the patellar tendon and anti-inflammatory medication can also help. Once the symptoms have reduced to a manageable level it's important to stretch out the tight structures around the knee such as the quadriceps, calf and hamstring muscles. These stretches need to be pain free and the intensity of the stretch gradually increased over time. And finally a structured strengthening program is important to build the resilience of the tendon and bone.
