Celebrating the life of Uncle Graham Dillon.

This week the Gold Coast Community including Palm Beach Currumbin SHS will honour the memory of respected Indigenous Elder, Uncle Graham Dillon. Uncle Graham passed away in his sleep on Saturday night at the age of 90.

Uncle Graham was a regular attender and speaker at NAIDOC activities at PBC. In addition, Uncle Graham, supported the school in its goal to improve the education and life outcomes for Indigenous and non-indigenous students alike. Uncle Graham, of the Kombumerri Ngarang-Wal Saltwater People achieved much in his life including a Doctorate from Griffith University and being awarded an Order of Australia Medal.

When Uncle Graham spoke to the students and staff at PBC, it was impressive to see how all 2800 people in attendance would listen.

The school will be guided by the wishes of the Indigenous Community in communicating and working with the Indigenous students and staff this week around sorry business.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Awards season culminated last Wednesday with the Year 12 Graduation and Formal. We farewelled over 400 Year 12s as they completed their secondary schooling in spectacular fashion. From the Red Carpet arrivals through to the Formal Dinner, the students celebrated after a year of hard work punctuated with disruptions.

Congratulations to Ryan Thwaite, Art Excellence, who on Saturday night won 4 awards at the Bond University Film and Television Awards (BUFTAs) with an animation he made in his spare time this year. Ryan did not study Film and TV and is totally self taught. This competition is a national competition for all Australian high school students and Ryan won Best Gold Coast Film, Best Animation, Best Director and the top prize Best Overall Film which gives him a full scholarship to Bond to study Film.

This week sees the commencement of exams for the Year 10 and 11 students. Students in Years 7 to 9 have a week of important lessons remaining together with assignment work being due before they commence with their exams.

Year 9 Academic Excellence Students move onto Australian Business Week activities next week which is sponsored by the Greater Southern Gold Coast Chamber of Commerce. The students get to display their entrepreneurial drive as they design, create and implement a business plan.

With less than three weeks to go we still have much to achieve to close out the year and be ready to begin the new school year. We have finalised reviews of our key programs and are now entering a consultation phase with staff on any changes for next year.

The final two weeks of school will see students finalise their assessment and gain feedback by mid Week 9. The remainder of Week 9 will include workshops for students to participate in that would develop personal skills to be successful in 2022. Week 10 begins with Transition Day for incoming Year 7’s and a Day camp for our current Year 7’s. Year 8 will head off on camp and Year 9 will not be required to attend so that they can take their placement at work experience and some alternate programs will begin on Tuesday of Week 10 for Year 7’s and 8’s not able to attend camp.

Our school values collaborative professional learning and this model of staffing and planning for our last week enables this to occur. This model allows us to release our teachers to prepare and plan in teams and undertake professional development. Absences will be tracked as normal with rolls marked each day and the usual sms message for absent students will be sent. Students will need to come in school uniform and should bring lunch as canteen will not be open from Tuesday 7 December.

Finishing Well

At this time of the year, both parents and teachers can notice young people becoming tired and losing focus. We have been stressing the very small number of school days left this year, and the importance of finishing with the best possible outcomes. Attendance every day is crucial for maximising student learning and performance.

Final assemblies in Week 9 will have special significance for the Year 9 students we will mark their transition to senior school with a special assembly and a BBQ.

Textbook Return

Now is the time of year for students to dig out the textbooks and novels they are no longer using in the classroom and return them to The Book Room in B Block. Any texts required through the exam period can be returned after the tests are completed.

Please encourage students to search through their bedrooms and lockers for textbooks. Returning all books now means that students will be able to hire next year’s texts in a timely manner at the start of 2022, and they will have no bill issued for missing texts!

Laptop Checks

IT staff will be in classrooms in Week 9 checking on any maintenance required for laptops so this can be completed prior to the new year starting.

Lockers

In these final weeks, students should be cleaning out their lockers in preparation for the end of the year. Bringing home those items not used daily can save students having to transport too many things home in one trip.

All lockers must be cleaned out by Friday 3 December.

Lockers will be available again at the start of the school year, at which time students may go to Student Services and have a locker allocated to them.

Year 10

This week our Year 10 students will enter their exam shutdown period. We wish all of our students well with their final Year 10 exams. We are excited to announce that Mr Jason Cross will be leading your students in 2022 as the Deputy Principal in charge of Year 11. Jason is proud of how our Year 10 students have grown and matured over this year and cannot wait to support them in 2022.

Reflecting over the Holidays

We encourage your students to reflect over the holidays on their engagement and academic performance to date. This is especially important as your student returns to PBC in 2022 and enters into the non-compulsory phase of schooling. Are they willing to be the best versions of themselves and give nothing but the best? This not only applies to academia but also to their sporting, cultural and artistic pursuits. We challenge every Year 11 (2022) student to step out of their comfort zone and take up the opportunities that our great school has to offer.

Year 10 Students not Returning to PBC in 2022

If your Student is not returning to PBC for the 2022 school year, please complete the attached Leaving Form, advise the name of the destination School your student will attend or, if your student is working – please provide a letter from the employer confirming that your student is working 25+ hours per week. Year 10 and 11 Exams

Year 10 and 11 shutdown exams commence on Monday 22 November and will continue until Friday 26 November. The shutdown timetable is published on the school website.

Note that some Year 11 subjects e.g. Maths, Health Education and Visual Arts in Practice do not complete their first Unit 3 assessment item until early in 2021.

Year 10 and Year 11 reports will be finalised and emailed home from Wednesday 9 December.

A reminder that all drafts and assignments are due before 9am on the due date and that exams cannot be given early to students because of other commitments. The school Assessment Policy is also published on the school website under Curriculum- Testing and Assessment.

Please note that in the QCE students cannot be exempt from assessment in Unit 3 and 4 (Term 4 Year 11 and onwards) due to medical conditions/family circumstances. Students must complete all assessment in Unit 3 and 4 to attain credit for the QCE. Students that miss assessment due to extenuating circumstances will have to provide documentation to apply for Extensions/Change of Date for Assessment. The school may then negotiate a more suitable time for assessment that meets QCAA deadlines This may mean the student completes alternate assessment at the end of the year or early in 2022.

Students that have a long-standing medical condition that affects them completing certain modes of assessment should by now have applied for an Access Arrangement and Reasonable Adjustment by the QCAA with the school Guidance Officer Mr Jones.

Release of Year 12 results

The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) will release student QCEs and Senior Statements and Statements of Results through the Student Portal on the myQCE website https://myqce.qcaa.qld.edu.au/index.html from 9am on Friday 17 December 2021. Students must know their Learner Unique Identifier (LUI) and password to log in and check their results.

Students will be able to download hard copies of their qualifications directly from the Student Portal on the myQCE website. They will not be sent hard copies from the QCAA though they will be able to request hard copies in the Student Portal.

Please note that as Year 12 results and Levels of Achievement are calculated by the QCAA, Year 12 students will not revive an Exit Statement or Report from PBC; they will only receive published results from the QCAA via the Student Portal.

Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

ATARs are calculated by the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). All ATAR eligible students should have registered with QTAC (https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar/ ) to ensure that they receive their ATAR on 19 December.

Year 12 school leavers seeking employment

Last Friday saw 65 Yr 11 Aquatic Practices students scuba diving in the PBC Pool with the crew from Tweed Sea Sports. The students have been studying the science of snorkelling and scuba diving and it was an awesome way to put the theory into practice. All students submerged themselves in the science of scuba and left the positively buoyant from their underwater experience. Many are now going onto complete their PADI dive course in the near future.

Our Year 9 Extension HPE group have done a Leadership Unit this Term. This involved the students planning Physical Activity sessions to lead to younger students. The objective of the unit was to build up their confidence and skills to plan, organise, lead and communicate. They were lucky enough to be able to lead the Year 4 students from Currumbin Primary in Tennis, AFL, Touch Footy, Soccer, Cricket, Basketball, NRL and Dodgeball. The year 9 students have done an amazing job and have received high praise from both the students and staff from Currumbin Primary. This was a great experience for both the Year 9 PBC students and the Year 4 Currumbin Students.

The Senior Drama Excellence students showcased their work of Contemporary Australian Drama at our annual ‘Scene Sessions’ evening last night. The students performed a variety of playscripts, each covering a unique and relevant set of themes for young people. The work was spectacular! Congratulations!

PBC Alumni, Ryan James and Nash Dawson attended at PBC this term to present the 2021 Ryan James and Nash Dawson Rugby League Awards.

Congratulations to Toran O’Donnell and Marley McLaren. Both boys showed great skill on the rugby league field as well as being leaders in the classroom. Toran was absent on the day. Pictured is Marley with Ryan and Nash.

We thank Ryan and Nash, both proud Reds for their continued support of the Sport Excellence Rugby League program. Ryan James will be playing for the Brisbane Broncos in 2022 and Nash Dawson is in Sports Management with Esportif and is a PBC Alliance Bronze Partner supporting PBC students achieve their potential.

On Thursday 4 November Miss Moss and Miss McQueen took their Year 9 Civics and Legal classes to Brisbane to visit the QLD Police Museum and Boggo Road Gaol. At the museum students were able to solve real cases using clues, ride a police motorbike and learn about the history of the QLD Police. At Boggo Road Gaol students were given a tour around the gaol, spent some time in the cells and learnt about some infamous inmates and well-known prison escapees. Some students were shocked about the primitive conditions the inmates lived in just 30 years ago! The students were lucky to be the only tour group so had the opportunity to explore all the remaining cell blocks. We also had lunch in the park situated on the old gaol grounds. It was a great day and we hope to make it a yearly event. This excursion links with the current unit students are learning about, “Criminal Law”.

The PBC Distance runners have completed four 5km park runs across this term as part of their assessment. We were unlucky again this year to not have a Track and Field Season, so used these as race practice and timed assessments. We did the Kirra, Varsity and Mudgeeraba parkrun over 8 weeks. All the students who took part ran new PB’s which was amazing.

Parkruns take place every Saturday morning at various locations across the Gold Coast. It is a great opportunity to get out in the morning and get some training done – there are a range of abilities, from people racing for PB’s to people just jogging and walking. All ages and abilities can have a go - a great family thing to do. Challenge yourself over the holiday!

Year 10/11 Optima Awards

This term we have celebrated our Year 10 and 11 high achieving students at our OPTIMA Awards Ceremonies recognising and acknowledging their outstanding achievements from Semester 1 2021. At the Optima Awards we acknowledge excellence in Academic, Improvement, Sporting, Cultural and Community Service. At the Year 11 Awards the cohort was introduced to their 2022 student council representatives. Congratulations to all students that received an Optima Award.

Junior Academic Awards Night

Last week we hosted the second Junior Sec Academic Awards Night. It was a successful evening with over 70 students recognised and around 200 parents and staff attending. Year-long subject awards, in both core and academic excellence, were presented as well as overall academic achievement awards for the top 10 students in each year. Special awards as traditionally have been presented were included. Feedback on the event was good with the suggestion that recognition of students doing a Variable Progression Pathway (VPP) be included for next time. Prefects have been selected and acknowledged for each year level with Year 7 to be chosen early in 2022.

Year 12 Graduation

Congratulations to the Class of 2021!

Our Year 12’s looked gorgeous in their gowns and sensational in their suits. The red carpet was awash with colour, sparkle, energy and excitement for our Year 12 Graduation and Formal at the Gold Coast Convention Centre! It was so lovely to be able to spend the afternoon welcoming our Graduates to their night of nights. Mr Kennedy and Ms I’Anson welcomed students on the red carpet as they departed their cars. From party buses to limos, Teslas to Combis, our graduates arrived in style. After climbing the stairs, the flashes began and the live stream interviews were beamed around the world. The Graduation ceremony saw student performers wow the audience, our graduates grace the stage, receiving their certificates and then our Student Leaders delivered their speeches. It was a beautiful opportunity for family and friends to celebrate the milestone with their students, thirteen years in the making.

After farewelling their care givers, students headed next door for dinner and dancing. The 2021 lights and balloon display, set up by ‘The Balloonery Gold Coast’ provided the most amazing backdrop for photos.

Motorcycling QLD Award 2021

Congratulations to Anika Loftus from the Year 8 Music Excellence class who is extremely honoured to be nominated for the 2021 Motorcycling Queensland Awards Night to be held virtually on 17 December. Anika has received her nominations for the ‘Junior Female - State Rider of the Year’ Award for her achievements in Speedway & Dirt Track throughout 2021.

GC5 Interschool Sport Days

After a very successful year of Interschool sport, we are pleased to inform you that the GC5 days will take place again next year. The 5 days will run similar to this year, with Year 7-10 students expected to participate in their chosen activity. Students will be asked to choose an option for the GC5 days during Week 2 in Term 1 next year, via an online survey during CARE class.

Students will have the choice of the following:

OPTION 1: Participate in an Inter School Sport team – (Trials week 5)

OPTION 2: Participate in one of the offsite recreational activities

OPTION 3: Sports Excellence / Creative Arts Excellence students will stay with their class/teacher/coach (CAX students can join an interschool sport team if desired)

OPTION 4: Join a school-based recreation class

Choices will be made and finalised by Week 5 in Term 1. No changes will occur from then on.

2022 Class Clowns

The search is on for Australia's funniest teens!

Class Clowns is back for 2022! For over 25 years, the Melbourne International Comedy Festival’s Class Clowns program has helped hundreds of young people develop their comedy potential.

Class Clowns plays a valuable role in supporting the confidence, self-expression and creativity of young Australians. The competition, workshop and mentoring opportunities aim to amplify the voices and perspectives of young people, creating a pathway for emerging Australian talent.

Think you've got what it takes to take out the Class Clowns crown?

Registrations are now open! Participants are only required to have 3-5 minutes of original comedy material, be it stand-up, sketch, narrative, solo, group, musical or physical.

Heats will be held around the country in March 2022 and comprise a 2-hour workshop where students will rehearse and refine their act with the help of a professional comedian, then be given an opportunity to perform for a live audience. The funniest entrants go on to compete in State Finals, with the winners invited to participate in the National Grand Final during the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. The overall national winner receives a cash prize of $1,500 and a workshop package for their school.

Australian Curriculum

Recently the department undertook a Australian Curriculum review. In response to Australia-wide feedback, ACARA has made significant changes to the 'consultation curriculum'. The updated version of the curriculum is yet to be approved and is not yet available for sharing.

Education Ministers will be making a decision regarding the revised curriculum in December 2021. If approved in December, the revised curriculum will be released on the ACARA website in January 2022.

A decision regarding Queensland's implementation of the revised Australian Curriculum will be made in consultation with all school sectors and key stakeholders following the release of the final curriculum (Version 9) in 2022.

It is parents, families and caregivers who have the most influence on their children. When families are actively involved in their children's education, children usually enjoy school and achieve better results.

The Australian Curriculum sets the goal for what all students should learn as they progress through their school life - wherever they live in Australia and whichever school they attend.

Parents and families are encouraged to visit the Australian Curriculum website and download The Australian Curriculum: an overview for parents to learn about how the Australian Curriculum is organised, including information about the learning areas, general capabilities and cross-curriculum priorities.

Australian Air Force Cadets Elanora

The Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) in Elanora is now recruiting for 2022!

We offer one of the leading youth development programs in Australian to youth aged 13 - 17 years old. The program provides opportunities to develop leadership and teamwork, and gain skills in survival, drill, aviation, ceremonial and community duties. Our graduates are highly sought after as a result.

Our squadron features exclusively in the televised Currumbin RSL Anzac Day service each year, and cadets have the opportunity to gain their Pilot Licence and/or Duke of Edinburgh Award as part of the program.

21–27 November is National Skin Cancer Action Week

Queensland’s ultraviolet radiation (UVR) levels are harmful even early in the morning when your kids travel to school.

During National Skin Cancer Action Week, 21–27 November 2021, we encourage you to join with us and promote sun-safe behaviour to your children. When helping them get ready for school – remind them to slop sunscreen on their face and arms (SPF30 or higher), slap on a broad-brimmed hat and seek shade while playing outside.

Early release of Year 12 results

Exciting news – students can get their final subject results a day earlier this year. For the first time, the QCAA will release results in student learning accounts on a Friday – from 9 am on 17 December. As well as checking their final subject results, students can get fast access to their Senior Statement, Queensland Certificate of Education or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement.

Like last year, the QCAA won’t be sending hard copies to students because the electronic copies are official. Students can download and print them at home or give electronic (PDF) copies to potential employers or further studies providers. Students can access their learning account via the Student Portal on the myQCE website. They’ll need their 10-digit LUI the first time they register.
